Toledo Zoo Toledo Zoo and Aquarium News 2024

Question- Should I create a species list for this wonderful facility? My only concern is the museum and aquarium. With the mountain load of unsigned species ( I struggled with Detroit) and the amount of time this will take.
A new species list for Toledo's zoo would be great! I would suggest dedicating time during your next visit for getting pictures of the signs in those two buildings as well as probably the reptile house and surrounding enclosures. For any species that aren't signed or are signed but only by genus, you might need to get good pictures and consult ZooChat with them and/or ask zoo employees.

I probably can easily do the whole zoo from memory besides the aviaries and indoor habitats so it will probably take me at least 2 visits. I do plan on visiting this January and maybe next weekend.

I don’t know if it was typed on this news thread or the one before but while on ZooTierlListe it appears the zoo has another Australian rarity. It states that the zoo gained 1.1 perenties in late 2023. I don’t know how accurate this is but I hope it’s true!
considering both Los Angeles Zoo and Dallas Zoo had some really good breeding success as of late, I'd image these Perentie's might be offspring from one of these two zoos.

I was looking at the renderings for the Toledo Zoo’s Masterplan and in the new carnivore attraction that I assume will be the future home for the zoo’s tigers. I saw an exhibit in the back that looks like it could be for an animal like a fishing cat or a snow leopard.

Is there a way to find these renderings?

I finally made it back to Toledo and I have a lot of updates.

The Carnivore Cafe is now fully open, all four entrances are accessible to guests. The cages that formerly held big cats are again available to dine in, and the zoo has purchased all new chairs and tables. The two former restaurants have been walled off and all the informational signage about the history of the building, has been removed. It would appear this building is now being used for guest seating, whether it’s permanent or just for the colder remains to be seen.

Construction behind the Reptile House has begun and all the outdoor exhibits that were behind the Reptile House have been completely removed. I talked with a zoo employee and I was told that the Reptile House will be closing at the end of the year. It will remain that way for a year and a half, as the interior will be getting maintenance new gas and water lines. And I’m sure they will connect it to the new outdoor exhibit. I am hopeful they won’t change too much on the inside as I am a huge fan of the current reptile house layout, bias aside it is my all time favorite Reptile house.

Finally and I am not 100% sure on this but the exhibit that was formerly home to Denda will now be home to the zoos 9 year old male Orangutan Wakil. This is not a confirmation as the Kingdom of the Apes was closed that day so I had to peer through the glass and it looked like Wakil’s name and photo. Again not a confirmation just what I gathered.

From the population thread, 0.1 Amur Leopard Edgar has been transferred to Toledo from Cleveland to breed with Nyura. Given Edgar's past temperment (Killed his mate at Erie and was apparently very territorial at Cleveland where he rotated exhibits), I'm praying this is an AI plan and Edgar stays away from her.

So most likely staying bts? (Along with other leopards)

So Toledo has five Amur Leopards now, I find it interesting that a premier species such as the Amur Leopard is off display. I get there is not exactly any room as of right now but I do wonder is they are in the zoo’s plans. Possibly in the new carnivore exhibit in the zoos masterplan.

If the Tigers and Snow Leopards move over to the new carnivore exhibit, give Tiger Terrace to the Amurs?

That would definitely be a good idea, you could give one of the existing exhibits to the cougars, and have the Amurs take the other two exhibits. But I don’t know if Toledo would do that especially if they would want to lean into Kodiak Ridge North America idea. But who knows if Toledo truly cares about putting their animals into geographic regions, because we’ve all seen Tembo trail and even the current Tiger Terrace.
