Both Asiatic elephant and southern pied hornbill breedings are especially Noteworthy!

I wonder why the zoo does not have any Colobine primates in the zoo. Lacking dusky langur, silvered leaf monkey or one of the Peninsular Leaf monkey species.

Thanks for the list @Toki and I know that you are a regular visitor to Taiping Zoo. I still vividly recall seeing my first ever Tarsier when you and @twilighter toured the zoo with me in August.

The list of species is very respectable for a medium-sized zoo:

Mammals = 49 species (including temporarily off-exhibit)
Birds = 34 species and potentially a few more
Reptiles & Amphibians = 17 species
Fish = 7 species

Total = 107 species

Unfortunately the zoo doesn't hold colobine primates. However, you'll most likely see a wild group of Dusky Langur (Trachypithecus obscurus) in the zoo.

@Toki, thanks for your updates! This thread is improving so much lately. Hope more Malaysian readers tag on and become participants too in the Taiping Zoo and other Malaysia threads.

Some nice conservation species news in Asiatic elephants, the Bawean deer (of course, quite a big herd ...!), southern pied hornbills breeding naturally here and some of the birds unsigned in the aviaries! Once more ... very well appreciated!

Yes, I hope that facilities in Malaysia gets more attenention from the world with help from more local zoo lovers.

I'm visiting Taiping frequently, so I'll update and information again soon!

Can you inquire with the staff at the zoo about the reason for the suspension of the exhibition of clouded leopards? Thank you!
OK, sure. I'll do that.
They have multiple individuals in the backyard, so it's most likely facility issues.

I asked the staff about it yesterday, and told me that it was issues regarding the enclosure.
They're doing long-term maintenance, and don't know when it's going to end.

The Sunbear exhibit is in a similar situation, and has been closed for over 5 months now.

Any improvements or upgrades are well appreciated.

Great 2 elephant cows are expecting? Is it known which individuals are pregnant and who is the sire for both?

Thanks.

Yes, the curator told me in August that they have 2 cows expecting this month or next month. 2 cows have recently moved to the backyard, probably preparing for birth.

However, the keeper in charge told me yesterday that none are pregnant. Maybe he's just hiding the unofficial information, or it might be they have miscarried.

I unfortunately don't know the names of the elephants here, since those details are not open to public. The elephant population in Taiping should be 2,5 at this moment. They had 16 individuals last year, but lost a lot due to EEHV.

Taiping Zoo Updates (Visit 7/12 NIght Safari)

Striped Skunk

-Maintenance of enclosure is finished, and has at least 1 individual on exhibit

No other big changes. Not sure about status of Sunbear and Clouded Leopard enclosures, since I was mainly focusing on other animals and did not visit that area of the zoo.

I will update any new information once I visit again.

Taiping Zoo Updates (Visit 31/12 NIght Safari)

Sunbear

-Maintenance of enclosure is finished

Leopard Cat

- I was able to get a close look at the animal for the first time
- It is signed "Leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis)", but looks somewhat like Javan leopard cat (Prionailurus javanensis)
- Not sure with ID of this animal, since I have never seen a Javan leopard cat before

No other big changes. The Clouded Leopard enclosure still remain closed.

I will update any new information once I visit again.

Bats at Zoo Taiping

Zoo Taiping currently holds at least 2 species of bats.

Malaysian Low Land Forest Aviary

Has signs for below two species, and a group of unidentified small bats are observed in the aviary.
Species is unknown, since the aviary can only be observed from outside, and the animals are only visible from a distance at night. Both species can be present, but it can also be another not signed species.

Lesser short-nosed fruit bat (Cynopterus brachyotis)
Island flying fox (Pteropus hypomelanus)

Milky Stork Aviary Aviary

Signed and seen at least 5 individuals of Large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus)
