North American African Elephant Population 2024

Osh left Oakland Zoo for Tennessee on October 16th, and arrived two days later. The zoo also announced that they are not bringing back elephants.

I feel as though this post is a little misleading. Unless I am missing it I do not see where the zoo has announced they are not bringing back elephants. The only thing I see in the article is they will announce their plans next year.
With Osh’s move, the Zoo will be without elephants for the first time in 75 years. This provides the opportunity for the Zoo to reimagine the future of the elephant habitat. No matter what species the Zoo chooses to commit to, the Zoo must invest significantly in renovating the 35-year-old habitat (including the barn and behind-the-scenes areas).

As the Zoo continues to assess its Long-Range Plan, more updates on the future of the elephant habitat will be available in 2025.

Correct, no where in the article does it state they are permanently leaving.

I went to Oakland earlier this year, and there were signs stating that "we see this as a pivotal moment to reaffirm the zoo's commitment to elephants even without them living on site." So basically, they're phasing out elephants at the very least for the forseeable future. 20240802_164013.jpg 20240802_164007.jpg

This is essentially the blanket statement for most facilities that have phased out their current elephants and haven't quite decided what route to take yet. Considering the exhibit would need some decent rennovations, it would likely be half a decade or more before they could receive new animals.
I can honestly see Oakland going either way on choosing to regain the species or not. If they're not making an announcement until next year, then imo its clearly up in the air.

While I have not personally seen the exhibit it looks beautiful from pictures. If the exhibit is what I’m lead to believe then this will be one of the best elephant exhibits at a traditional zoo.

A good move although I would have preferred a more genetically valuable bull, but considering Tsavo is his mother Moyo's only surviving offspring he is one of the more valuable bulls sired by Jackson, and hopefully Reid Park could welcome calves as soon as 2027
Agreed! While another bull of greater genetic value would've been nice, we need to see bull transfers like this one (especially for unproven males). The African SSP is in dire need of more naturally breeding males (considering that there are only six currently) and DAK's young bulls will almost surely be breeding powerhouses considering the enviornment they've grown up in. It is lovely to see Reid Park being so proactive with bringing in a new bull now that Mabu is officially no longer an option for them. This sets them quite nicely for calves to be born close together for what could be the forseeable future!

(It also now seems that Jabali is the pick of the litter, so to speak, for Stella's first calf at DAK though, which is simply wonderful. A win-win imo.)

Stella’s older sister Luna currently is pregnant at Disneys animal kingdom and that happened through natural breeding. That would’ve meant either Jabali or Tsavo is the father of that calf.

Hopefully it is Jabali, as he is the most valuable of the two.

It is also makes sense as to why Tsavo was chosen to depart over Jabali; Jabali having strong breeding application within DAK's current herd, only related to one of the breeding cows (Kianga).

Kianga is also currently pregnant and has a breeding recommendation anyway with Maclean. And that is not changing I don’t think anytime soon either. Jabali is there to breed with Macleans daughters (that and plus the fact he was born there).

According to a cast member, Kianga’s pregnancy is a result of AI with samples from Maclean and a male from another facility.

DAK is truly leading the pack when it comes to what will be the future of breeding facilities. Two bulls onsite to breed, a fully integrated multi-generational herd, and the capacity to hold a bachelor herd alongside the breeding herd.
