Mixed species exhibit ideas

Can anything go with a red eyed tree frog? For example a 15 gallon tank.

Some zoos mix Red-eyed Tree Frogs or similarly sized tree frogs with Emerald Tree Boa, but you would need a much larger tank than a 15 gallon to accommodate the boa. 15 gallons is honestly already stretching it for one RETF.

You could also have a paludarium setup with tropical fish in the water area with a chance that the RETF may predate on some of the fish, but this will also require a larger tank.

1.3 Cape Barren Geese
1.2 Bennett’s Wallabies

1.0 Brazilian Tapir
1.1 Southern Screamers

1.1 Red Pandas
0.1 Northern Red Muntjac

1.1 Grey-winged Trumpeters
2.1 Golden Lion Tamarins (a breeding pair and their baby boy)

All of these are proven mixes that already exist in a few zoos

Franklin Park Zoo once did this with Panamanian golden frog. To my knowledge it worked, but unfortunately neither species remains at the zoo.

Wood ducks and beavers have worked. Toucans are a bit territorial and aggressive and so are the storks

I'm not sure about the Boa/anaconda mix, but the rest should all work

Wood ducks and beavers have worked. Toucans are a bit territorial and aggressive and so are the storks

I’ve seen the storks with yellow-backed duikers before, but I don’t know if they will work with a smaller species.

The third mix is one I’ve personally witnessed at Rosamond Gifford in Syracuse.

Those geese will only function as a pair, probably killing the extra females. I’ve known Cereopsis turn on wallabies after years of coexistence

I’ll just phase out the geese because bird-mammal mixes just seem too chaotic in general…

Magpie Geese, Maned Geese, Australian Shelduck, Chestnut Teal, would all work well with wallabies

It’s not good practice to mix pelicans with smaller birds. The pelicans are likely to eat the jacanas. Flamingos and pelicans can compete for nesting space and put each other off breeding. Or that mix might work, depending on numbers and space available

Thank you for the suggestions. I’m seriously considering planning a small zoo when I’m in my late 20s-mid 30s, and I’m looking to the folks on this thread for suggestions for exhibits.

The terns, unlike the jacanas, are primarily cliff-dwelling birds that roost high up on rock formations and are fast fliers. The pelicans dwell mostly on the ground and in the water, so the jacanas would get in their way.

Bronx does not mix Inca terms with pelicans, it’s peguins, swans, and a few other birds
