Seeking advice from locals or past visitors to Hamerton without their own cars:

Has anyone got a taxi between Hamerton and Peterborough train station before? Uber seems to be available in Peterborough and it's £26-27 but I guess it may be difficult getting an Uber to come out to Hamerton to pick you up for the return journey? Would the zoo likely be able to call a local cab service for the return journey and is it likely to be in the same ballpark for price?

Any thoughts/comments appreciated!

I got one to/from Huntingdon a few months ago, which would be similar I suppose. I booked both online, worked out to around £25 each way. I think I used Master Cars.

That's great, thanks. Good to know. Thinking of a Hamerton trip at the end of November so hopefully as many of their unusual small mammals as possible are visible!

A significantly cheaper option would be as follows:
  • Book a taxi from Sawtry to the zoo, and at the same time book a taxi from the zoo to Sawtry.
  • Get the bus from Peterborough to Sawtry, and then take the previously-booked taxi to the zoo.
  • On departing the zoo, get the previously-booked taxi to Sawtry, and then get the bus from Sawtry to Peterborough.
Alternatively, there is the strategy I always follow on my visits to Hamerton - get the bus to and from Sawtry, and walk the 3.5 miles to and from the zoo :D

To my surprise there seem to be a couple of taxi companies in Sawtry so maybe this is doable.

Hmmm... however looking at this a bit more, the bus between Peterborough and Sawtry at the weekend runs every 90 minutes. If I arrive at Peterborough at 9:24 AM on a Saturday the next bus isn't until 10:30 and whatever train I arrive in Peterborough at the weekend it's over an hour's wait until the next bus. Similarly constrained on the return as well it looks like, probably not worth it.

I'll be splitting the taxi with a friend too so we'll each pay one way. The money I save by cycling to work and not running a car is much more than an occasional taxi around - that's my justification at least :D :D :D

On my last visit to Hamerton in 2020, I did end up visiting via Uber from Huntingdon train station, I was under the same impression that Uber wouldn’t pick up from Hamerton but was pleasantly surprised they did :p I have always visited back taxi and found it very easy to get to and from the train station (hopefully my next visit will be with my own vehicle).

The bus used to be hourly even on weekends - and continue much later into the evening - but there were cuts about 18 months ago :(

It may also be worth you looking up the feasibility of getting the same bus from and to Huntingdon rather than Peterborough, if train schedules to Huntingdon match the bus schedules a little better.

I was surprised too that Uber picks up there. On my trip to Hamerton last week, I got the bus from Huntingdon to Sawtry, then an Uber to the zoo from there (£8.50). On my return, I simply got an Uber back to Huntingdon (£18.99). So it makes for an additional expense, but it worked very smoothly.

I got an Uber both ways between Hamerton and Peterborough station today. Around £22 each way (visited with a friend so one way each). It all worked fine, although the Uber dropping us off thought we would not be able to get a car back so left his number and said he'd come back and get us for an extra £10 on top of the Uber price if we called 30 minutes in advance.

Hamerton was fantastic, would absolutely recommend! It feels most like a zoo built for zoo nerds of anywhere that I've visited. Unfortunately the grisons were not visible despite multiple visits to the enclosures in the morning and afternoon - all the more reason to go back!
