Berlin Zoo Berlin Zoo news 2024

What great news!
It would be a surprise if they put it where the bearded pig used to be, it would be more logical to put it in the bongo installation or in some enclosure in the deer area.
We hope to see it on display soon.

According to the published masterplan, the whole area encompassing Okapis and Bongos will eventually be turned into a big okapi enclosure, what is not known to me is the possibility of a mix with either one or two duiker species

What is to happen to Berlin Zoo's long standing tradition with breeding Eastern Mountain bongo?

I'm Italian, what do I know about the Berliners's affairs?
Jokes aside, I genuinely have no clue, maybe they will try to mix them before resorting to the Tierpark? Maybe they will be moved once any of the bigger bovine groups goes extinct within the facility? All is pure speculation.

I don't personally see them leaving, unless the Zoo intends to create a specialist breeding facility for the Okapi the area is unfeasibly large for just that species, so I think they will redevelop the Bongo exhibit as well - this reason is in addition to the breeding history as you say, the fact the current paddock is very nice indeed and the fact there is a large herd there, not just a dwindling population.

One thing to remember though is the former black rhino paddock remains to be redeveloped, opening up space on that side of the zoo.

All these observations (@Mickey + @cerperal) are helpful, just I wonder what our local Berliners have to say about the corner okapi-bongo-sable antelope-black rhino (erstwhile) have to say about the okapi complex planning and surrounding areas. I particularly value @markmeier's judgement here!

We also have heard about the plans to bring gorillas in the extension over the canal. That could be a massive area developed arount African rainforest thema but geographical displays are not supposed to be part of the spatial organisation of the Berlin zoo (but maybe they could be flexible given there is no historical structure involved?).

Does the zoo plan to get a new bull Nile Hippo anytime soon, or do they plan to keep a bloat of female hippos only? I do suppose that it is possible that Ede was transferred out so that they can bring in a new bull to breed with his daughters Nicole (24) and Nala (13), who are both at breeding age (though Ede did sire multiple calves with Nicole already). Kati is out of the question for breeding as she is 49.

There's been no news, which isn't surprising given the fairly quiet move of Ede. There's a shortage of bulls in Europe currently so there might be an issue there if they did want to bring in a bull.

There's one young bull who is a possibility, that being Hodor at Whipsnade, but he's still rather young. It would be a shame if Berlin didn't bring in a male given the diminished number of hippos in Europe and the fact they have a pair of prime breeding age
