Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species Mammalian and Non-Mammalian

Thanks @Osedax for the truly fascinating historical information from Australia in regards to some hoofstock in the region. I spent one very long day in Kakadu National Park in 2007 and the number of birds there is extraordinary, but I certainly didn't know about an escape lechwe!

And thank you @nczoofan for posting that map about Dallas Zoo's future African walking track in the old monorail area. I've been on road trips through Texas in 2008, 2010 and 2015, and I have always ranked my top 3 Texas zoos as Dallas, Houston and Fort Worth, in that order. With Houston and Fort Worth having spent an absolute fortune on new exhibits in the past decade, they've risen in everyone's eyes, but Dallas now has a genuine opportunity to be the #1 again as the Safari Trail would be a substantial area with a lot of large mammals back on show to the public. One could make a strong case that Texas is the #1 U.S. state for zoos as the overall quality there is very strong.

In today's post, I will look at TWO very rare species.

East African Oryx, also called Beisa Oryx or Fringe-eared Oryx depending on the subspecies, are rarer in zoos than one might think. According to Zootierliste, there's only 3 AZA accredited zoos in North America with the species (North Carolina, SDZSP, The Wilds) as they've been phased out everywhere else. Total zoos in the world with Beisa Oryx numbers maybe only 25 and of the last 200 new zoos I've visited, I have seen the species only once.

These days, seeing a Hartebeest in captivity would almost be a mythical event as they are gone from close to every zoo in the world. Yet, when I was an extremely young child I saw Hartebeest at Alberta Game Farm in Edmonton, Canada. That zoo actually bred the species and the establishment was the first (and maybe only?) zoo in Canada to achieve that feat.

** If one wishes to gain a tremendous amount of knowledge about Hartebeests in European zoos, then you can purchase Issue 70, Spring 2024 of Zoo Grapevine & International Zoo News. In that particular magazine there's 7 pages of text and photos all about the history of Hartebeest in European zoos and it's a wealth of information.

I've seen Beisa Oryx at 10 zoos:

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Beisa Oryx – 1975
2- San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) – (Fringe-eared) Beisa Oryx – 2006
3- Woodland Park Zoo (USA) – (Fringe-eared) Beisa Oryx – 2008
4- North Carolina Zoo (USA) – (Fringe-eared) Beisa Oryx – 2010
5- Gladys Porter Zoo (USA) – Beisa Oryx – 2010
6- Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park (USA) – Beisa Oryx – 2011
7- Hemker Park & Zoo (USA) – Beisa Oryx – 2014
8- Timbavati Wildlife Park (USA) – Beisa Oryx – 2014
9- Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park (USA) – Beisa Oryx – 2018
10- Burgers' Zoo (Netherlands) – Beisa Oryx – 2019

AND...

I've seen Hartebeest at 1 zoo:

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Hartebeest (listed as Cape) – 1975

Beisa Oryx look a lot like Gemsbok, especially the distinctive faces. It's the darker flanks and legs that set Gemsbok apart. Here's a Beisa Oryx at San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA):

@Julio C Castro

It's amazing that San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA) has had many desert antelope species that look alike. Addax, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Arabian Oryx, Gemsbok AND Beisa Oryx have all been at the park at various times. I wonder if SDZSP had all 5 species at once? It seems likely and once again any zoo nerd who lives in southern California is very fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit this zoo on a regular basis.

There's at least 5 Beisa Oryx resting in the shade in my 2023 photo from Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park (USA). Aside from SDZSP, this zoo might be America's premier hoofstock destination.

That Arizona zoo, famed for its ungulates, has had Beisa Oryx for many years.

@Giant Eland

This enclosure for Beisa Oryx is as simple as it gets. Hemker Park & Zoo (USA) had the species when I toured the zoo in 2014 and it was quite a surprise to see them in a region that receives a ton of snow every winter. Someone mentioned earlier on this thread that the antelope at Hemker Park & Zoo are crated and moved south in the colder months.

That same summer, I toured Timbavati Wildlife Park (USA) and a big, grassy paddock had the following 6 species all together: Beisa Oryx, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Greater Kudu, Common Eland, Nilgai and Yak. Wouldn't hybridization be an issue with the two oryx species? Or would this naff Wisconsin zoo not really care about that?

Burgers' Zoo (Netherlands) had a small group of Beisa Oryx when I was there in 2019 and I have no idea if the zoo has had success with breeding or not but they look spectacular in their large exhibit.

As for Hartebeest, I was too young to take photos of the Hartebeest I saw back in Canada in the late 1970s (and they were possibly still alive in the early 1980s), but between 2005 and 2013 Burgers' Zoo (Netherlands) held Cape Hartebeest according to @KevinB and here is his photo:

Many hardcore zoo nerds are already well aware that the last Hartebeest in a European zoo died at Wroclaw Zoo (Poland). That could be a sad trivia question. :(

@twilighter

The closest I've come to seeing Hartebeest again, apart from many times in my early childhood, would be at Taiping Zoo (Malaysia) in August, because a big sign of the zoo's map still lists Red Hartebeest on it even though the species has probably been gone for 20 years! I couldn't resist taking a photo:

@toto98 claims to have seen a beisa oryx at the defunt Matecaña City Zoo, in Pereira (Colombia).

full

Indeed, the antelope was labeled as Oryx beisa, though I believe it was a case of a mistaken identity. If you watch any videos where you can see the animal's hind legs, you will notice they were striped, so it could not be an East African oryx.

South African oryx, as I previously mentioned, were also present at Hacienda Nápoles, from where almost fifty animals arrived in Pereira in the early 1990s, when Pablo Escobar was killed by the Colombian police. If this particular antelope belonged to the infamous drug dealer, it was most likely either a pure Oryx gazella or a hybrid between a gemsbok and a scimitar-horned oryx.

If I am correct, there are no records of Oryx beisa being held in South America I am aware for.

Now for the hartebeest! Believe it or not, not one, but two Brazilian zoos have held Alcelaphus buselaphus caama.

São Paulo imported a few from Germany (Hannover, I believe) in 1976. At least one calf was born in 1977. Other two specimens were sent to Sorocaba between said year and 1984. By 1986, I believe there were no more hartebeest in the capital, but they were still kicking it at Quinzinho de Barros, where a birth was recorded in 1995.

@snowleopard the hartebeest at Polar Park were also of the red subspecies.

For many years, I always thought that Bontebok and Blesbok were separate species, but as time went on I realized that Bontebok was the true name and that Blesbok was a subspecies. Has that always been the case or was there ever the thought that there was indeed two separate species? I can recall being confused at zoos 15 years ago, with signage referencing both names and on my list below there's certainly been many zoos with the name Blesbok posted next to an exhibit.

Bontebok are especially plentiful in loads of European zoos and according to Zootierliste (looking up both Bontebok and Blesbok) there's around 80 zoos with the species worldwide. It would appear Europe showcases only the Blesbok subspecies. There's currently at least 10 AZA accredited zoos with Bontebok in North America, many of which have maintained the species for a couple of decades or longer. I missed the blesbok at Zoo Santo Inácio by a few years, as it had left for Valencia in 2013.

São Paulo did have blesbok in their Antelope Plain, way back in the 1970s. They, however, have been gone since at least 1978. I guess they either were moved to another zoo (if so, it most likely was Belo Horizonte) or all passed away in a short time frame.

Damaliscus pygargus were also present at Safari Carabobo, in Valencia (no, the one in Venezuela) in the 1980s.

Bontebok and Blesbok have been regarded as separate species at various times, but either in the distant Victorian past, or under the Groves super splitting taxonomy. However, there is no general common name for the species other than using one or other of the subspecies names.

I've always used the (self-coined) name "White-faced Damalisk" when thinking of the overall taxon rather than either subspecies :)

So did the staff in São Paulo. The blesbok were called "damalisco-de-cara-branca" ("white-faced damalisk" in Portuguese), instead of the adapted version of its original name ("blesboque").

When I toured Van Blanckendaell Park (Netherlands) in 2019, which is a privately-owned Dutch zoo that hardly a single zoo nerd seems to have visited since I was there 5 years ago, the facility had just opened an African Savanna in 2018. Giraffe, Plains Zebra and Ostrich were common occupants, but Bontebok (labeled as Blesbok) were a bit of an outlier.

For me blesbok/bontebok have always felt for me like a mixture of wierdness and elegance. I've always past them at the SDZ, and this could be said for a lot of the other animals the live in the remains of the Horn and Hoof mesa, except the gerenuk, which I've always admire and have the camare ready to try to snap a photo of them standing on their hind legs. I haven't talked too much with ungulates, but it's always fu to read your post and try to find the species on the book All mammals of the world. It's also crazy to see that we're almost at 100 pages for the thread:eek:!

I recall actually seeing this animal in Taiping when I was a kid.
Sad thing that I was too young to take a photo of it.

Taiping Zoo finally updated their maps and signs recently, so the Hartebeest is no longer seen on the map. You were lucky to see this sign in August!

Mexican zoos have a good number of antelope species. Red lewche, waterbuck, sable, scimitar horned oryx and gemsbok are all present at varoius zoos. Regarding, Hartebeest, Zoologico Nacional de Cuba in Havana still has a small breeding herd from animals that were imórted from Namibia several years ago. The same institution also has groups of roan antelope and springbok which also came from imports from Namibia.

Time for TWO species today.

I've had a few private messages where people have asked about really obscure members of the Bovidae family, but I assure you all that no matter how many zoos I visit there will always be a list of mammals that I will perhaps never see in my lifetime. So far, there are SIX species that I've only ever seen at a single zoo (Hartebeest, Mountain Reedbuck, Northern Bushbuck, Red-fronted Gazelle, Rhebok, Saiga), but I could just as easily list SIX species that I've never seen: Beira, Gedemsa, Herola, Puku, Saola, Tsessebe. Some of those are so obscure that it's a slim chance of me ever having the opportunity to come across them in captivity.

Blue Wildebeest are one of the most common antelopes in zoos and as of now this species launches itself into my top 5 Bovidae list at close to 50 zoos. These days there's only around a dozen or so AZA accredited zoos with any kind of Blue Wildebeest subspecies, but wildebeest are found in privately-owned North American zoos and on hunting ranches in southern states. There's a number of zoos in Mexico and tons in both Europe and Asia with Blue Wildebeest, making this mammal a frequently seen member of African Savanna complexes in zoos worldwide.

On the other hand, the majority of captive Black Wildebeest are all found in European zoos and elsewhere this species is relatively rare. Their darker flanks and more curved horns set them apart from their wildebeest peers.

I've seen Blue Wildebeest at 47 zoos and Black Wildebeest at 4 zoos (including 3 zoos with BOTH species):

2019 = 10 zoos (Western Europe)
2024 = 8 zoos (Southeast Asia)

Believe it or not, I have never seen a blue wildebeest (one of my zoo confessions).

There have been four distinct populations of Connochaetes taurinus in Brazil.

The first ones arrived at the Vila Isabel zoo, the predecessor to BioParque do Rio, in the 1910s.

The second herd was at Granja Julieta, a private zoo in São Paulo, from where two (1.1) black and two (1.1) blue wildebeest arrived at Quinta da Boa Vista (the park inside which BioParque do Rio is located) in 1945. The blue ones were already gone by the early 1950s.

The third group was imported from Italy to São Paulo in 1972. They were very prolific, and many of the calves born (likely along with a few of the founders) were shared with other Brazilian zoos (Simba Safari, Sorocaba, Curitiba and Brasília), but their demise was met in the early-to-mid 1990s.

The fourth lineage, still ongoing, derives from four wildebeest imported to Brasília from Lisbon in 1998. One of the founding males was sent to Goiânia in the 2000s. I believe at least a few ended up at the Serra Azul farm, the last place in Brazil one can still see the species (if the ones in Maranhão, which are likely related to the ones in Qurinópolis, have passed away). Of course, you can only visit the property with the owner's permission.

Currently, there are no blue wildebeest in Brazilian zoos, with the last one passing away in 2013, at the Brasília zoo.

Now, for the black wildebeest.

Basically, one of the only zoos to have held the species was RioZoo, which firstly brought a pair from the aforementioned Granja Julieta in the 1940s. Further imports happened in the 1960s and 1970s, but no breeding occurred.

Forty years later and Brazil finally gets to have black wildebeest again. There is a male named Lockee at Animália Park, the only white-tailed gnu in South America. Similarly to the gemsbok @Jana and I previously mentioned, he came from Olomouc two years ago. I saw him this February, though I had seen the species before at Zoo Santo Inácio, in 2018.

Similarly to one of the sable antelope in Lisbon, Lockee was off-show at the time of my visit. Despite this, I caught a good glimpse of him.

A heavily treed enclosure that used to be called Fabric of Africa held Blue Wildebeest and Plains Zebra at Roger Williams Park Zoo (USA) when I visited in 2010. That area has had Watusi added and is now named Lower Savanna.

The rear fencing at Roger Williams Park Zoo is a distraction, but it's better than the up-front fencing at Franklin Park Zoo (USA) for its Serengeti Crossing enclosure with Blue Wildebeest, Plains Zebra and Ostrich.

Okay but to be fair the Franklin Park exhibit is much bigger and more appropriate ignoring the fencing.

Rocky Mountain Goats are currently found in only 21 zoos worldwide, according to Zootierliste. It's one of those geographical quirks when it comes to zoo nerds, as most of the major zoos that are near me (which can still be a long trip in each case!) all have Rocky Mountain Goats and I've even seen wild ones while driving through the Rocky Mountains. But for a zoo nerd anywhere in the southern USA, or basically any other continent in the world, then this species would be a highly treasured rarity. My guess is that most well-travelled zoo nerds based in Europe have seen Rocky Mountain Goats at only a couple of zoos.

The most southern-based zoo in the world with Rocky Mountain Goats would be Bearizona (USA) and that's a facility in northern Arizona. Every zoo with the species is found in colder areas that can see a least a little bit of snowfall each winter, which is a positive thing for this species, and even Arizona-based Bearizona can see snow in the winter! No one needs to walk around a crappy Florida gator park and see these spectacular cold-weather animals.

I've seen Rocky Mountain Goats at 16 zoos:

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 1975
2- Woodland Park Zoo (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 1996
3- Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 1998
4- Northwest Trek Wildlife Park (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2005
5- Oregon Zoo (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2005
6- Calgary Zoo (Canada) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2006
7- B.C. Wildlife Park (Canada) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2006
8- Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2010
9- Pocatello Zoo (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2012
10- Yellowstone Bear World (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2014
11- Bear Country U.S.A. (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2014
12- Dakota Zoo (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2014
13- Bearizona (USA) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2015
14- Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo (Canada) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2018
15- Dierenpark Zie-ZOO (Netherlands) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2019
16- Berlin Tierpark (Germany) – Rocky Mountain Goat – 2019

Rocky Mountain Goats have shaggy coats year-round, although the coats are much thicker in wintertime.

Woodland Park Zoo (USA) opened its Northern Trail area in the mid-1990s and recently tweaked the zone a tiny bit and renamed it Living Northwest Trail. One of the exhibits there is for Rocky Mountain Goats and there was even a time period where a couple of Arctic Foxes shared the habitat.

The tram tour at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park (USA) takes visitors through a 435-acre/176-hectare area that includes Rocky Mountain Goats and 6 other hoofstock species. I remember taking an early tour in the past and easily seeing all the animals because the zoo would place piles of food near the roadways.

It's great to visit Oregon Zoo (USA) and be able to see Rocky Mountain Goats without even paying. The exhibit is the first in the zoo and part of the superb Great Northwest complex, which is arguably the best section of the zoo even though it's now an older zone.

You can see two Rocky Mountain Goats in my first photo:

When I was at Pocatello Zoo (USA), now known as Zoo Idaho, back in 2012, there was a couple of boring, chain-link yards for Rocky Mountain Goats. You can see a couple of goats in my photo and it's a world away from some of the fantastic exhibits I've already highlighted in this post.

At Bearizona (USA), there's a drive-through zone with a few Rocky Mountain Goats and the animals have access to a slightly elevated area that's part of a reddish mock-rock mini-mountain.

I was genuinely surprised to head off to some European zoos and tour Dierenpark Zie-ZOO (Netherlands) in 2019 and see Rocky Mountain Goats, and especially in a flat enclosure with some heavy-duty electrified fencing. You could keep a Polar Bear behind that fence these days!

Since then, the zoo now showcases its Rocky Mountain Goats in a more suitable environment, although I'm not sure how large the space is for the inhabitants.

No records of Rocky Mountain goats in South America that I am aware of.

Maybe a few could end up in an Argentianian hunting ranch somehow.

Just for reference, this exhibit is actually a lot bigger than this individual photograph makes it seem, with multiple vantage points showing the full scale of the exhibit. If memory recalls right, I believe you can even see the goats from the river otter viewing. I've always loved the landscaping in that whole area of the zoo.
