Uhh, yes, Lear´s macaws (my bad).

How is renovation of Sao Paulo zoo going? New exhibits or species recently?
well, i saw that one of the hippos got a new enclosure, the orangutan is now living in the former gorilla exhibit, that was also used by the chimps,yellow baboons and southern muriquis, and also recently it was builded a new enclosure to the four new magellanic penguins after 15 years without the species.

Nothing much. The sea lion exhibit was reformed to house hippos, the old white-lipped peccary enclosure became an alpaca paddock, the flamingo pond was covered up (and a few more animals were added to the enclosure), the anacondas were replaced by a few animals of the Cerrado, a new area for owls (including the only Eurasian eagle and snowy owls in a Brazilian zoo) was inaugurated, a new axolotl exhibit was built (Xochilmico Space, definitely the most modern area of the zoo), the warthogs are now in the cassowary pen (the cassowary has been moved to a new aviary and there is a fallow doe in the former warthog enclosure), the orangutan was moved to the former gorilla grotto, the chimpanzee complex was reformed (the wall of the former orangutan exhibit was torn down), the otters were replaced by penguins and the Aldabra giant tortoises were moved to the former addax paddock. The former African elephant exhibit is also under maintenance and the buildings were painted brown.

Recent deaths include an Asian elephant, caracals and servals and new residents include turacos (three species) and Spix's macaws (off-show)

Despite all of these changes, FPZSP has been losing animals (and visitors thanks to Animália Park) like crazy and is not what it once used to be in terms of world relevance. Almost none of the enclosures are among the best in the country for their respective residents and actually, a few are among the worst. Taking into the account the behemoth it used to be, it is sad to see the zoo become a "gourmet" experience with little conservation value after it was privatized.

São Paulo has disappointed me once again. Instead of tearing down the former African elephant exhibit and giving their rhinos a new yard, which would not be ideal but much better to their current situation, they have announced blackbuck will be taking said space.

❤️ #ZooSaoPaulo #Wildlife #Cervicapra #Animais #Novo #RedescubraZoo"

I am deeply saddened by this decision also because Antilope cervicapra have become the new dominant antelope species in Brazil. I had never seen one until 2018, when I went to Portugal, but now they are everywhere in the country, and they are actively breeding. Everytime a zoo needs to fill up a blank space, they choose to bring said species. Because of that, antelope diversity has dwindled and if nothing is done soon enough, we will only see either blackbuck or waterbuck (which I would love to see being replaced by Nile lechwe) in our zoos.

As one of my friends has said, their Instagram account's current objective is just announcing a new animal they have acquired, instead of actually focusing on why said creature is there to begin with.

Replacing the old "Bosque das Aves Africanas" (African Bird Forest) and the former caracal cage, the zoo has inaugurated a new "Bosque": "Bosque da Conservação" (Conservation Grove). In the newly inaugurated area, visitors will be able to see a total of seven different threatened species of birds:

- Black-fonted piping guan (Pipile jacutinga);
- Alagoas curassow (Mitu mitu);
- Red-tailed amazon (Amazona brasiliensis);
- Red-browed amazon (Amazona rhodocorhytha);
- Vinaceous-breasted amazon (Amazona vinacea);
- Lear's macaw (Anodorhynchus leari);
- Spix's macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii).

It is the first time the zoo's Spix's macaws are on display. They currently have two in exhibiton.

#ZooSaoPaulo #Animais #Natureza #ArarinhaAzul #Conservacao"

This was kind of a surprising move, to be honest. I will be heading to São Paulo in the next few weeks and surely, the macaws will be my top priority.

I look forward to your review and I am quite happy the São Paulo Zoo does not fully say goodbye to their conservation project work!

I suspect a Brasilian first to put the species on display and with concurrent breeding success!

AND: I can only hope for more Brasileiro zoos to start working with Buffy tufte ar marmosets!!!

Those interested in small Callithricid conservation might wish to view this website:

Not reallly. The nearby Guarulhos zoo was the first one to put their buffy-tufted marmosets in exhibition (my first ever Callithrix aurita were seen there way before São Paulo put theirs on display). I am quite sure they have succesfully bred the species as well.

@Enzo, thanks for pointing that one out. Very much appreciated!

I am glad to see more zoos take on the species though ..., being another representative from the Atlantic rainforests - one of the most critically endangered ecosystems within the Brasilian enviroment (along with the Cerrado and of course Amazonia).

Recently male Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) Pororó arrived at the zoo.

Thanks for the news, but there's actually something important to notice: although Pororó has only arrived at the zoo now, he isn't actually a new animal for Zoo SP. He arrived in 2007, and was living by its own on the Zoo's Safari Park until now. I believe he also lived for a while with the zoo's other hippos when he arrived, since he was quite young at the time of his arrival, but I'm not 100% sure.

The zoo now has 1.2 Hippos, but only one of the females (Sininho) will be living with him, because the other female (Colônia) and her don't get along well.

He was born there, according to ZIMS. A few news reports claim he is a grandson of Teteia's, which would make him Sininho's nephew. This means they are inbreeding their hippos.
