Wildlands Emmen Wildlands Adventure Zoo News 2024

A new pair of Asian small-clawed otters arrived at Wildlands recently. They are a three-year-old male from a Swedish zoo and a one-year-old female from a Danish zoo.

In September a Grant`s zebra (Equus quagga boehmi) was born.

A male Vicuna (Vicugna vicugna) was born.

At the end of September a female Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) arrived and was paired to the present male.

The newborn lions are all female!

Like previous years around 300 butterflies of 20 different species were released in the Vlindertempel. These butterflies came from 3 German butterfly gardens in Buchholz, Uslar and Wittenberg which close during the winter months.

For the first time in 16 years, a common hippo was born again in Emmen. The 35-year-old female Jetje gave birth to a female calf on November 8. Father is 11-year-old Kibo, who arrived in 2023.

Unfortunately elephant calf Nagarr unexpectedly died at the age of nearly 2 on Saturday afternoon. The body has been brought to the University of Utrecht veterinary faculty for necropsy.

From an initial investigation, there is strong evidence of bacterial infection of the intestines as the cause of death.

Unfortunately, the 3-year-old elephant bull Kan Yan also died in Emmen. Further investigation shows that Nagarr, who died on Saturday, did die of EEHV. It is assumed that Kan Yan also died from this.

The Russian sturgeons have moved from the beaver exhibit to the moat around the monkey temple next to the entrance building. They usually hid in areas where visitors cannot see them well in the beaver exhibit. In this pond they will be able to be viewed better. According to the article Wildlands probably no longer has koi, possibly because of a disease.
