Eleo, the 6 year old male pacific white sided dolphin transferred from the Miami Seaquarium in August of last year has passed away.

So sad… every death in this population is significant. Hearts out to his caretakers. I wouldn’t be surprised if his death ends up being linked to his time at MSQ.

Seems like a safe assumption. The Miami Seaquarium is genuinely awful:
According to the USDA, Miami Seaquarium "failed to recognize veterinary authority" when Elelo the Pacific white-sided dolphin was treated for "foreign body ingestion" earlier this year.

On January 3, after Elelo went under treatment for foreign body ingestion, the attending veterinarian (AV) determined that his enclosure was no longer suitable for the animal and recommended he be transferred to another facility. However, that transfer didn't happen at the time of inspection, according to the USDA.

Later on July 6, after noting continued foreign body ingestion by Elelo, the AV determined that Miami Seaquarium did not have the equipment to keep the animal in its current facility and had to undergo a "significant amount of maintenance" and that there was a "repeat risk of foreign body ingestion." According to the USDA, the AV stated that she contacted the administration to try and expedite the process and planned to relocate Elelo to another facility as mentioned earlier.

According to the USDA, Miami Seaquarium failed to maintain two different marine animal enclosures. The first of which was Elelo's enclosure, which led the dolphin to ingest several objects, including a plastic zip-tie, a broken piece of plastic and what was described to be a "large piece of cement, which were all found during his January 3 gastroscopy. According to the USDA, the zip-tie was used to secure pool fencing, the plastic was likely from a target pole and divers noted that the bottom of the pool had a layer of "broken, flaking cement."

During the second procedure on July 5, Elelo was made to regurgitate "sand and glass filtration media," according to the USDA.

"Enclosures that fall into states of disrepair may no longer be able to safely contain the animals and may produce foreign material which could be ingested and become injurious to the animals," the report stated.

RIP Elelo.

Not sure about the first photo but the second one is definitely fake - none of those people are real.
Unless the aquarium has received some sort of major area expansion I don't know about, the first photo's windows are looking into a place that doesn't exist.

I think @StoppableSan was doing a side-by-side comparison of a photo and concept art to illustrate that the article does have real photos, given that the second picture is not in the article.

I'm not paywalled and all the pictures in the article look like real photos to me.

That was the goal - in retrospect, I should have captioned the photos as far as which was real and which was concept art. A lot of exhibits in zoos and aquariums nowadays do actually look eerily similar to concept art, which could mean one of two things: either renderings have gotten hyper-realistic or the zoo/aquarium 100% stuck to the plot.

Naya's calf, born on the 24th of July at the Shedd Aquarium, is a male! This comes from the Marine Mammal Inventory Report (MMIR), which has officially listed the calf under a NOAA ID(NOA0010807), as well as a facility ID(A240693).

Came to this thread to inquire about this calf and I'm thrilled to hear he's doing okay. I interacted with Naya about a month before his birth, via the Shedd's beluga encounter experience, and had no idea she was pregnant. She's had a rough go of it with calves (a stillbirth, a calf who died at a few days old, and twins- one stillborn and one who passed at about two weeks old).

Idk. I'm probably anthropomorphizing but I'm just happy to see he's doing okay. I wonder when they'll announce his name!

I was elated when I visited, to hear that Shedd had a new beluga. These cetaceans are so valuable, especially in captivity where their numbers have stagnated. Unfortunately, I missed seeing the Tasmanian giant crab when I visited, so I'm the tiniest bit bitter, lol.

Hi friends! I found a lot of photos of the Amazon Rising renovation. https://www.sheddaquarium.org/about-shedd/press-releases/amazon-rising-returns
At the bottom of that link is this link to take you to photos FilesAnywhere
There are 30,000 additional gallons of water now in Amazon Rising!

Thanks for sharing! I always enjoy exhibits with excellent graphics and educational material and these updated elements really tie the gallery space together. Really cool they included life-like models for some tactical opportunities, too.

wonder what other changes where made besides the arapaima habitat

There are new dart frog habitats mostly built into one wall. Two are small 18 x 18 enclosures as would be commonly used for pets, one is a bit larger and more professional with a rounded front. Many animals were rearranged, the anaconda is in a new enclosure across the hall, the parrots were absent but a new enclosure only partly furnished was built where anaconda used to be and the parrots will now be housed over fish in an exhibit which has a large water section. There is a children's area at the end of the complex themed as a pet store with 4 15-gallon aquariums set up as one might set up their home fish tanks. Signage in this area is dedicated to promoting ethical pet ownership not just of fish but also of parrots and reptiles. The renovations are very nice and the area feels fresh and new now.

I don't want to speculate, as they didn't specify a reason, only that the calf was under around-the-clock observation (which is not unusual even for a calf that's being raised by the mother).

Naya has a documented history of alloparenting behaviors (helping other mothers raise calves to the point of producing milk for them) but also has never had a calf survive infancy. I'm sure the specific reason for this calf being hand-reared will come out in time.

Mixing the otters with fish is really cool and unique!

Another article about the new entrance from the Chicago Sun-Times is here, but behind a paywall.

The new main entrance is apparently set to open tomorrow. Anyone know if there have been any updates about the Wonder of Water exhibit?

https://news.wttw.com/2024/11/19/la...rs-shedd-aquarium-s-reimagined-front-entrance
It appears not. The paywalled article above provides a brief mention, but no new information: "The new lobby was part of phase two of the aquarium’s Centennial Commitment plan. Up next will be a new “Wonder of Water” exhibit that will feature a dual habitat, one freshwater and one saltwater, in the aquarium’s rotunda. An opening date has yet to be announced. Construction for the Centennial Commitment, which includes two more phases, will be completed in 2027, when the focus shifts to programming until 2030."

So it sounds like a rough timeline is that Wonder of Water will probably open next year, and then work will start on the Caribbean Reef tunnel to be completed by 2027.

The map on there website already shows the 2 freshwater areas are temporarily closed. I’d imagine this means work on the new ocean exhibit is imminent, likely as soon as they wrap on the current projects.
