North American Bonobo Population

San Diego Zoo received almost 8-year-old Bertie from the Columbus Zoo, and almost 11-year-old Belle was transferred to Columbus. I hope that both these females will settle in with their new troops and that we will see babies in the near future! Bertie was on exhibit for the first time today. I uploaded a few photos of her.

Is there a specific reason why the Ape Cognition and Conservation Initiative is not a part of the Bonobo Management Partnership? With their facilities they could easily house a large group of bonobos and lead the breeding efforts of the program/solve the issues of overcapacity at other facilities.

The other bonobo institutions did not let ACCI join the Bonobo Management Partnership. ACCI has the most space by far and only houses bonobos. It is a shame.

Elema has been out with her baby, I believe is a boy, at the outside enclosure. They are starting her out there with her little one and will eventually she will be in the inside habitat. She is a really good mom so far. Not a great shot but you can see the little hand

Is it possible that research centers and sanctuaries that are traditionally not breeding facilities so they were excluded from breeding programs because of that element.

I don't think there are any new holders who want to have Bonobos, and those zoos would rather have Chimpanzees, as they are cheaper and easier to manage?

@betsy
You are fantastic - according to my data KIBIBI was transferred from Cincinnati to Jacksonville in November 2019 together with her mum KIMIA. My mistake, thank you guys and ladies.

She was transferred from Cincinnati to Columbus on 11/11/2019. Interestingly, this birth was not announced on their Facebook page, nor has their website been updated with the "Meet the Bonobos at the Columbus Zoo" information.

@BjoernN no, your correct. Kibibi went to Jacksonville in 2019. She then transferred to Columbus in 2023.
