North American African Elephant Reproduction

Happy to see another healthy birth this year, we are up to #4!! I was under the impression that neither of the girls were going to give birth this month but lovely all the same. However I definitely agree with the sentiment that another male Mabu calf is a touch disappointing, this is his 9th son.
Fingers crossed that Amahle has a healthy girl :p!
It is a fairly early birth - Mabu only arrived in November of 2022 so it's only been twenty one months since his arrival (usual gestation is 22 months, but there can be fluctuations). She was due September, so she obviously conceived straight away as well. Amahle's due October, but as we've seen here it isn't guaranteed.

I was thinking that the new calf seems on the small side in the posted photos- makes sense then if it was a slightly short gestation.

The first calf was like “what is that?!” It’s going to be great to watch them grow up together. Two boys.

Well... there are 7 breeding age females at SDZSP - and only 1 of them are Musi's mother. Fingers crossed!
It's absolutely essential Khosi and Kamile have conceived considering their ages. Especially Kamile considering the genetic value on her maternal side.

Hopefully Musi got the job done in the time he was with the cows, however if not, fingers crossed they've undertaken AI if required.
