You know the drill. As 2024 draws to a close it's time for the 8th annual ZooChat Thread of the Year completion. This is a celebration of the valuable content produced by ZooChat members over the last year. If you've participated in the past you should know how this works, but as we seem to be getting more new contributors than ever these days, here's a quick refresh on the rules:

1.) On this thread, post the titles of exactly three threads (and the users that created them) that you think deserve to be considered for Thread of the Year. Any type of thread is eligible for nomination: news, discussion, travel, lists, history, speculative design, etc. It just has to have been created between December 15th, 2023 and December 15th, 2024.

2.) You cannot submit your own thread to be nominated. However, if your thread is within the top contenders you are permitted to vote for it.

3.) When the first round nominations have concluded, the top five threads that received the most nominations will be entered into a poll. In the event two or more threads tie for the fifth most nominations, both threads will be included in the final poll.

4.) Absolutely no privately soliciting votes under any circumstances. If you are reported doing so, it will result in your nominations being disregarded and your thread becoming ineligible for nomination. Repeat offenders will be banned from participation in the future. With that said, you can campaign publicly for any thread you think deserves to be given a nomination if you’d like.

The nomination period will end on December 15th at 11:59 PM Chicago time. From there a separate thread will be created to vote for the winner between the selected finalists. Whatever thread has the most votes at 11:59 PM Chicago time on December 31st will win the coveted title of 2024 ZooChat Thread of the Year. Don't hesitate to ask for any further clarifications if needed and send in your selections. Best of luck!

Here are my three choices:
Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species by @snowleopard

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part seven: 2024-2025 by @Chlidonias

Mo’s Zoo Chronicles: A 20-Year Photographic Retrospective by @Mo Hassan

I would also like to give a shout-out to Philippine eagle spotted above the Alpes by @Philipine eagle, which was a great thread, and would have made my vote, but was created four days too early to be considered, and was a bit too new last year to be a popular choice.

I'll vote the following threads:
  • Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species by @snowleopard.
  • Mo’s Zoo Chronicles: A 20-Year Photographic Retrospective by @Mo Hassan
  • Zootierliste Goes Worldwide by @Animal
I just want to say thanks to everyone that has made wonderful thread over this year. I think I don't give enough credit to others persons work. From zootierliste to the incredible posts that @snowleopard and @Mo Hassan make, as they have to be tough work. But also thanks to everyone who have made this site wonderful even if you haven't made a thread or don't have my vote. You're an incredible community!

Gotta be exactly three I think...
I can confirm that is the rule with the iconic lintworm quote “Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.”

Lots of super interesting threads and discussions this year. Hats off to people putting effort into making fascinating content all over the site.

I'd nominate the following

1. Snowleopard's Mammals a lifetime of species @snowleopard

Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species

An enjoyable, well written and interesting look at all the things Snowleopard has seen across years of travels, including photos from across the site. A thread which has caught the imagination of and engaged lots of us in discussion on the animals and their habitats and zoos. There are few threads that involve people from all the different countries on zoochat and bring us out of our 'lanes' and, like the Lintworm thread from 2023 on animals in captivity, this one has done just that.

2. Colchester zoo, past present and future @DesertRhino150

Colchester Zoo - past, present and future [Colchester Zoo]

This is a fun, well writen and well researched read. It makes visiting Colchester more fun when you understand the history (I enjoyed the discussions last year on Whipsnade buildings and areas too). These threads and conversations add loads to a zoo visit and make a day out more fun.

3. Whistling Kite 24 does South Australia @WhistlingKite24

The Great Southern State: WhistlingKite24 does South Australia

I really enjoyed this write up and the excellent photos (Whistling Kite's photography is always worth looking at in itself). I like reading trip reports and the ones on places I will probably never visit are particularly interesting to me as they open up a world well beyond my borders.

Also well worth reading / participating in and much enjoyed this year

"Shooting" British Birds @Prochilodus246 - I'd like to say a real thank you to Prochilodus for this thread. I've enjoyed posting in it, hearing about peoples trips and seeing the pictures. More to come for this thread in 2025 I am sure as it is a perennial.

"Shooting" Japanese Birds @Dr. Wolverine - excellent wildlife thread with some great photos and like the shooting British birds, hopefully helps people see how many things are out there to look at native species wise.

Zootrip report 2024; southern German and Austria @ralph - a thorough and interesting trip report

I am also enjoying the new @Childonias thread on travelling in Asia Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part seven: 2024-2025 more to come on that one I am sure, less lost bank cards we hope. I'd also like to say thanks for the Big Year wildlife thread...first time I'd ventured into that and it's been a great way to catch up with what people are seeing and what's out there.

@Philipine eagle 's thread about their trip to all things Alpine was also great, but just too early for nomination in 2024.
