Inspired by many animal analysis threads, most notably, the short-lived @Pandamich 's thread, I'm going to analyze the amount of holdings of Planet Zoo species in worldwide zoos. I'm going to go in order from first released to the Zookeeper Pack in case there is another animal/s that is added when creating this. The scale on this list in abundance is:

Abundant: 50+ holders
Extremely Common: 36-49 holders
Common: 21-35 holders
Uncommon: 11-20 holders
Rare: 6-10 holders
Very Rare: 1-5 holders

Here are the 100 survey facilities with facilities from every continent.

African Savannah Elephants, the largest land mammals on Earth, live in the grasslands and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. These intelligent, socially complex creatures have long been targeted by poachers who illegally hunt them for their ivory tusks, contributing to a significant decline in elephant populations over the past century. These elephants are often headliners in African grassland exhibits and safari parks.

Grizzly Bears, formidable inhabitants of North America’s forests and mountain regions, possess keen intelligence and strength that have long fascinated people. Historically, hunting and habitat destruction have diminished their populations, forcing conservationists and wildlife managers to intervene. While brown bears are commonly found on nearly continent (except Oceania) in captivity, the institutes on the survey facilities list were only from North America.

West African Lion is a lion subspecies that historically occupied regions stretching from North Africa through parts of West and Central Africa and into Asia. This group includes several distinctive populations: the Northern lions, once found across North Africa, included the now-extinct Barbary lion, renowned for its robust build and dark, thick mane. The West African lion, a critically endangered population, remains scattered in small, isolated groups in protected areas. Farther east, the Asiatic lion survives in a single stronghold within the Gir Forest of India, where conservation efforts have managed to stabilize and slightly increase their numbers. In Europe and Asia, this is one of the most common subspecies while in North America, it's only found in Henderson (Lion Habitat Ranch) which aren't even likely pure individuals.

The plains zebra, also known as the common zebra, inhabits the grasslands and savannas of eastern and southern Africa, forming herds that roam open landscapes in search of grazing pastures. These social, highly vocal animals rely on close-knit group dynamics to detect predators and navigate seasonal migrations. With their distinctive black-and-white stripes, plains zebras exhibit patterns as unique as human fingerprints, helping individuals recognize one another and possibly confound predators’ visual perception. This species of zebra is the most common one found in captivity, being found on all 7 continents in multiple countries and collections.

Hippopotamuses, among the heaviest land mammals, are semi-aquatic herbivores that spend much of their day submerged in rivers and lakes throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Their barrel-shaped bodies and broad, powerful jaws make them formidable, while their largely grass-based diet supports sizable populations where ample food and stable habitats exist. Socially, hippos often gather in the water under a dominant male, using grunts, wheezes, and body language for communication. Despite their widespread range, hippos face challenges from habitat degradation and illegal hunting for ivory-like canine teeth, prompting conservation efforts to protect essential wetland habitats.

Grey Wolves, scientifically known as Canis lupus, are highly adaptable carnivores once widespread across the Northern Hemisphere. Among their numerous subspecies, the timber wolf—found throughout North America’s forests—exemplifies the species’ resilience and social complexity. Other regional variants, such as the Arctic Wolf inhabiting the High Arctic’s frozen tundra or the Mexican Wolf struggling to regain ground in the American Southwest, each reflect unique adaptations to their respective environments. Historically diminished by human persecution and habitat loss, many wolf populations have stabilized or even rebounded due to protection under conservation laws and careful reintroduction efforts. As a result, these apex predators continue to influence the health and balance of ecosystems spanning boreal woodlands, rugged mountains, and remote northern landscapes.

Ring-Tailed Lemurs, native only to the island of Madagascar, are among the most easily recognized lemurs due to their distinctive, black-and-white ringed tails. They are notably the most common primate exhibited in accredited zoos worldwide, serving as ambassadors for the conservation of Madagascar’s unique ecosystems. In their natural habitat, these highly social primates form matriarchal groups, relying on strong group cohesion to navigate seasonal food shortages and avoid predators. Unfortunately, habitat loss, slash-and-burn agriculture, and poaching have put their wild populations at risk, making ring-tailed lemurs a flagship conservation species.

Galápagos giant tortoises, native to the volcanic islands that bear their name, have long fascinated explorers and scientists alike. Initially considered a single species, differences in shell shape, size, and habitat use led researchers to split them into multiple species unique to various islands. More recently, advances in genetic studies and a broader understanding of their evolutionary relationships have prompted some scientists to reclassify them back into a single, highly variable species with several distinct populations. This ever-evolving taxonomy underscores the complexity of these ancient reptiles, which can live well over a century and were once heavily hunted by sailors passing through the archipelago. Today, international conservation efforts strive to restore populations, safeguard their island habitats, and preserve the Galápagos giant tortoise as an emblem of evolutionary marvels and ecological resilience.

The Reticulated Giraffe, distinguished by its intricate, white-lined polygonal coat patterns, inhabits the arid savannas and open woodlands of northern Kenya and surrounding areas. Historically recognized as a distinct subspecies and now considered by many experts as a separate species, the reticulated giraffe faces challenges from habitat fragmentation, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Ironically, while these giraffes are popular in zoos, recent genetic research has shown that most individuals in American zoological collections are in fact hybrids, carrying mixed ancestry rather than being genetically pure reticulated giraffes.

The Western Chimpanzee, a subspecies of Pan troglodytes found in West Africa, has captured global attention not only due to its remarkable intelligence and complex social structures, but also from the popularity sparked by the “Planet of the Apes” film franchise. In the wild, these primates craft and use tools, form intricate hierarchies, and display a range of learned behaviors passed down through generations. Unfortunately, deforestation, poaching, and human encroachment threaten their existence, making the Western Chimpanzee one of the most endangered chimpanzee populations.

The Pygmy Hippopotamus, a smaller and more elusive relative of its larger cousin, hails from the dense forests and swamps of West Africa. Endangered and rarely seen in the wild, these nocturnal herbivores depend on shrinking habitats and are increasingly threatened by human activity. However, individual pygmy hippos housed in reputable zoological institutions have begun capturing the public’s heart, boosting awareness and support for their conservation. Beloved individuals like Haggis at the Edinburgh Zoo and Moo Deng at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand have gained considerable attention.

Komodo Dragons are the largest extant lizards, capable of exceeding three meters in length and attaining masses of over 70 kilograms. Endemic to several Indonesian islands, including Komodo and Rinca, these apex predators occupy a range of habitats from dry savannas to tropical forests. Their robust jaws, serrated teeth, and a complex venom system facilitate the capture and subjugation of large prey, ranging from deer to water buffalo. Sensory adaptations, such as a keenly forked tongue and acute olfaction, allow Komodo dragons to detect carrion and living targets from considerable distances. Mating and reproductive behaviors involve territorial displays, and females deposit clutches of eggs in carefully chosen nesting sites.

Thomson’s Gazelles are swift, medium-sized antelopes native to the savannas and grasslands of East Africa, where they form vital components of the region’s predator-prey dynamics. Despite their ecological importance and characteristic black side stripes, they are relatively uncommon in zoological collections compared to more iconic African antelope species such as giraffes, greater kudus, or sable antelopes. Part of the reason for this lesser popularity lies in the complexities of maintaining large, open habitats required for their natural grazing and rapid, agile movements, as well as their relatively low public profile compared to more charismatic or visually striking species. As a result, while they play key roles in their native ecosystems, Thomson’s gazelles remain less represented in zoos, underscoring the importance of targeted conservation efforts and visitor education programs to ensure their continued presence in both natural and managed environments.

The African Wild Dog is a highly social, cooperatively hunting canid native to the savannas and lightly wooded areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Noted for their uniquely patterned coats of black, white, and yellowish-brown fur, these packs rely on intricate communication, unwavering cooperation, and elaborate social hierarchies to thrive. Yet, despite their remarkable adaptations and critical ecological role, African wild dogs have suffered severe population declines due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and exposure to infectious diseases.

Cheetahs, renowned as the fastest land animals, are capable of accelerating from a standstill to nearly 100 kilometers per hour in just a few seconds. This unprecedented speed, combined with their flexible spine, enlarged nostrils, and specialized paw pads, allows them to outrun many prey species inhabiting the savannas and open grasslands of Africa, as well as parts of Asia. Traditionally classified into several subspecies—such as the Northeast African cheetah (A. j. soemmeringii), the Southern African cheetah (A. j. jubatus), and the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah (A. j. venaticus)—these variations reflect adaptations to regional habitats and prey availability. Despite their prowess, cheetahs face challenges from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and declining genetic diversity, prompting intensified conservation measures to secure the future of these iconic, high-speed predators.

Is there a reason you picked those 100 facilities? Wouldn't it make more sense to use something like zootierliste?
Zootierliste doesn't correctly list all zoos in the world, and I wanted to just take a look on 100 major-ish zoos across the world from all continents

#12 Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis)
IUCN Status: Endangered
Wild Population Estimate: 3,400
Abundance: Extremely Common (38)
Toronto Zoo does not have them anymore but plans to get them again.
#2 Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis)
IUCN Status: Least Concern
Wild Population Estimate: 55,000
Abundance: Uncommon (11)
Toronto Zoo have a grizzly bear named Shintay

Also, I am not sure if you would count it for the reticulated giraffe. Calgary zoo holds Moshi, a hybrid of Masai and Reticulated Giraffe. Her mother Carrie(passed away) was a reticulated. His father Nabo is a Masai giraffe.

It surely does not. If I were you, I would never trust the Latin American section of ZTL. A single person has managed to mess all of the database up and we (Latin American users) have not figured out who did it.

I would recommend ditching a few American zoos to make room for a few more in the Third World. You have left out very significant collections in Brazil, Colombia, India, etc. You have also given the same amount of representation to Australasia as you've given to South America.

Rio, Belo Horizonte, Parque das Aves and Brasília all deserve space on the thread in my opinion. Same goes for Ukumarí, Delhi and Jamnagar.

I'd remove Albuquerque, Brevard, Colorado Springs, Como, Lincoln Park, Roger Williams and Zagreb in order to give more space to the aforementioned zoos. I'd also replace Friguia Park (Tunisia) with Rabat (Morocco).

+ São Paulo no longer holds plains zebras. They sent their last mare to Salvador this week.

I can help you if you want some data about South American zoos.

Ok. Any other mistakes? On Tuesday, I'm going to post 5 more species with the updated information for the 15 current species. If anyone has any mistakes/tips, private message me

Dublin has Eurasian grey wolf. I'm just curious as to where you're getting some of this information from.

If you just open the spoiler, it says Dublin Zoo so I included them.

Columbus Zoo isn't a survey facilitiy
What makes a surveyed zoo? Also, I’d like to point out that all of the reticulated giraffes in the AZA are hybrids. So it would make sense to include them than the just pure species.
