I didn’t include any of the aza’s zoos for reticulated giraffe. The first post lists all 100 facilities varying in popularity, continent, size, etc. that will be surveyed. If you would just open all spoilers and read the content, your questions would have been answered
Timber Wolf just means any subspecies of wolf that lives in forests, even the zoopedia of planet zoo just list them as canis lupus instead of a specific subspecies like other animals.

Do you know what zoos have Eastern Wolves? I couldn't find that much information about them. Should I just count all timber wolves (include northwestern wolf, northern rocky mountain wolf and Eastern Wolf)?

Here's an updated amount of species with new ones coming later this week. Also, Jurong Bird Park is going to be replaced with Bird Paradise in the survey as I forgot to edit it. Only 3 facilities don't have any species so far which are Bird Paradise, Ocean Park Hong Kong, and River Wonders.

The Pygmy Hippopotamus, a smaller and more elusive relative of its larger cousin, hails from the dense forests and swamps of West Africa. Endangered and rarely seen in the wild, these nocturnal herbivores depend on shrinking habitats and are increasingly threatened by human activity. However, individual pygmy hippos housed in reputable zoological institutions have begun capturing the public’s heart, boosting awareness and support for their conservation. Beloved individuals like Haggis at the Edinburgh Zoo and Moo Deng at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand have gained considerable attention.

Komodo Dragons are the largest extant lizards, capable of exceeding three meters in length and attaining masses of over 70 kilograms. Endemic to several Indonesian islands, including Komodo and Rinca, these apex predators occupy a range of habitats from dry savannas to tropical forests. Their robust jaws, serrated teeth, and a complex venom system facilitate the capture and subjugation of large prey, ranging from deer to water buffalo. Sensory adaptations, such as a keenly forked tongue and acute olfaction, allow Komodo dragons to detect carrion and living targets from considerable distances. Mating and reproductive behaviors involve territorial displays, and females deposit clutches of eggs in carefully chosen nesting sites.

Thomson’s Gazelles are swift, medium-sized antelopes native to the savannas and grasslands of East Africa, where they form vital components of the region’s predator-prey dynamics. Despite their ecological importance and characteristic black side stripes, they are relatively uncommon in zoological collections compared to more iconic African antelope species such as giraffes, greater kudus, or sable antelopes. Part of the reason for this lesser popularity lies in the complexities of maintaining large, open habitats required for their natural grazing and rapid, agile movements, as well as their relatively low public profile compared to more charismatic or visually striking species. As a result, while they play key roles in their native ecosystems, Thomson’s gazelles remain less represented in zoos, underscoring the importance of targeted conservation efforts and visitor education programs to ensure their continued presence in both natural and managed environments.

The African Wild Dog is a highly social, cooperatively hunting canid native to the savannas and lightly wooded areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Noted for their uniquely patterned coats of black, white, and yellowish-brown fur, these packs rely on intricate communication, unwavering cooperation, and elaborate social hierarchies to thrive. Yet, despite their remarkable adaptations and critical ecological role, African wild dogs have suffered severe population declines due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and exposure to infectious diseases.

Cheetahs, renowned as the fastest land animals, are capable of accelerating from a standstill to nearly 100 kilometers per hour in just a few seconds. This unprecedented speed, combined with their flexible spine, enlarged nostrils, and specialized paw pads, allows them to outrun many prey species inhabiting the savannas and open grasslands of Africa, as well as parts of Asia. Traditionally classified into several subspecies—such as the Northeast African cheetah (A. j. soemmeringii), the Southern African cheetah (A. j. jubatus), and the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah (A. j. venaticus)—these variations reflect adaptations to regional habitats and prey availability. Despite their prowess, cheetahs face challenges from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and declining genetic diversity, prompting intensified conservation measures to secure the future of these iconic, high-speed predators.
Planet Zoo Version - Image Credit -> Planet Zoo/Frontier Developments
There are nowhere near 87,000 cheetahs left in the wild, or currently existence, period. The current wild population estimate is ~7,000 if I’m not mistaken.
I said I was only going to post 5 animals a week, but why not 5 more.

Grey Wolves, scientifically known as Canis lupus, are highly adaptable carnivores once widespread across the Northern Hemisphere. Among their numerous subspecies, the timber wolf—found throughout North America’s forests—exemplifies the species’ resilience and social complexity. Other regional variants, such as the Arctic Wolf inhabiting the High Arctic’s frozen tundra or the Mexican Wolf struggling to regain ground in the American Southwest, each reflect unique adaptations to their respective environments. Historically diminished by human persecution and habitat loss, many wolf populations have stabilized or even rebounded due to protection under conservation laws and careful reintroduction efforts. As a result, these apex predators continue to influence the health and balance of ecosystems spanning boreal woodlands, rugged mountains, and remote northern landscapes.

Ring-Tailed Lemurs, native only to the island of Madagascar, are among the most easily recognized lemurs due to their distinctive, black-and-white ringed tails. They are notably the most common primate exhibited in accredited zoos worldwide, serving as ambassadors for the conservation of Madagascar’s unique ecosystems. In their natural habitat, these highly social primates form matriarchal groups, relying on strong group cohesion to navigate seasonal food shortages and avoid predators. Unfortunately, habitat loss, slash-and-burn agriculture, and poaching have put their wild populations at risk, making ring-tailed lemurs a flagship conservation species.

Galápagos giant tortoises, native to the volcanic islands that bear their name, have long fascinated explorers and scientists alike. Initially considered a single species, differences in shell shape, size, and habitat use led researchers to split them into multiple species unique to various islands. More recently, advances in genetic studies and a broader understanding of their evolutionary relationships have prompted some scientists to reclassify them back into a single, highly variable species with several distinct populations. This ever-evolving taxonomy underscores the complexity of these ancient reptiles, which can live well over a century and were once heavily hunted by sailors passing through the archipelago. Today, international conservation efforts strive to restore populations, safeguard their island habitats, and preserve the Galápagos giant tortoise as an emblem of evolutionary marvels and ecological resilience.

The Reticulated Giraffe, distinguished by its intricate, white-lined polygonal coat patterns, inhabits the arid savannas and open woodlands of northern Kenya and surrounding areas. Historically recognized as a distinct subspecies and now considered by many experts as a separate species, the reticulated giraffe faces challenges from habitat fragmentation, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Ironically, while these giraffes are popular in zoos, recent genetic research has shown that most individuals in American zoological collections are in fact hybrids, carrying mixed ancestry rather than being genetically pure reticulated giraffes.

The Western Chimpanzee, a subspecies of Pan troglodytes found in West Africa, has captured global attention not only due to its remarkable intelligence and complex social structures, but also from the popularity sparked by the “Planet of the Apes” film franchise. In the wild, these primates craft and use tools, form intricate hierarchies, and display a range of learned behaviors passed down through generations. Unfortunately, deforestation, poaching, and human encroachment threaten their existence, making the Western Chimpanzee one of the most endangered chimpanzee populations.

Is it going against the principle and practice of maintaining sub species in different collections to lump all the ‘plains zebra’ together just because a game does that? it makes them come out as ‘common’ in collections where some variants are hardly that.
Even though the various sub species of plains zebra exist on a more north to south basis than a DNA based one, zoos do maintain different programmes for maneless or chapmans zebras etc. Zoos in the U.K. (London being an example from your list) label by sub species as well as or instead of plains for example.

Springbok are agile, medium-sized antelopes native to the open grasslands and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. Capable of sprinting at speeds exceeding 80 kilometers per hour, they rely on rapid acceleration and nimble footwork to evade a range of predators. Their unique “pronking” behavior—leaping into the air with an arched back—is thought to communicate fitness or startle potential threats. As a common prey species for large African carnivores, including cheetahs, lions, and wild dogs, springbok play a vital role in sustaining the dynamic predator-prey balance of their ecosystems. Although still relatively abundant, factors such as habitat degradation, human disturbance, and climate change underscore the importance of conserving these speedsters and the environments they call home.

Black Wildebeests, also known as white-tailed gnus, are herbivorous antelopes endemic to the open plains and grasslands of southern Africa. Characterized by their dark brown to black coats, distinct forward-curving horns, and a long, flowing white tail, they form herds that migrate seasonally in search of grazing pastures. While they play essential roles in their native ecosystems, black wildebeests remain less common in zoological collections compared to their more frequently exhibited relatives, the blue wildebeests.

The Lesser Antillean Iguana is a critically endangered lizard endemic to the Lesser Antilles, an archipelago in the Caribbean. Characterized by a uniform greenish-gray coloration and lacking the distinctive subtympanic plate seen in its more widespread relative, the Green iguana, this species depends on undisturbed coastal forests and scrublands for foraging and nesting sites. Unfortunately, habitat degradation, predation by introduced species, and hybridization with Green iguanas have drastically reduced its natural populations. Ongoing conservation efforts include habitat protection, removal of invasive predators, and careful management of populations to maintain genetic purity.

Indian peafowl, native to the Indian subcontinent, are renowned for the iridescent blue and green plumage of the males, whose extravagant train feathers and elaborate courtship displays have long captivated human observers. Found in a variety of habitats, from open forests to cultivated lands, these omnivorous birds have adapted well to coexist alongside human communities. Traditionally common in zoos due to their striking appearance and relative hardiness, Indian peafowl are now less frequently kept, as zoological institutions increasingly focus on more threatened species and prioritize breeding programs for high-conservation-value taxa. This shift in collection strategies highlights the changing role of zoos, steering away from familiar ornamental species towards efforts that emphasize global biodiversity preservation such as their relatives, Congo peafowl and green peafowl.

Happy to see that my home zoo has finally made the cut! Just a small correction, Zoológico de São Paulo (São Paulo zoo) no longer holds Plains zebras, only Grevy ones. Their last individual, a single mare, was sent to Salvador zoo last year (Parque Zoobotânico Getúlio Vargas, a smaller zoo on Brazil's northeast).
