Bristol Zoo Project Bristol zoo project news 2024

Membership email received today:

Our male red panda, Neora, has welcomed a female companion named Laya from Réserve Zoologique de la Haute-Touche in Obterre, France.

Laya is settling into her new home at Bristol Zoo Project where she will share the zoo's red panda habitat with Neora, who arrived earlier this year.

One year old Laya is named after a town and a valley in Bhutan in Asia, where red pandas are found in the wild.

Native to the eastern Himalayas and south-western China, red pandas are classified as endangered by the IUCN. The wild population is thought to be as low as 2,500 individuals which are threatened by habitat loss and poaching.

Neora and Laya are part of a breeding programme to help secure the future of their species.

You can visit the adorable panda pair in the new red panda habitat, located next to the Barefoot Trail.

Don’t know if it’s an error or not but it lists boxer pup fish on ZTL, are they at the zoo and if so where?

Creating Central African Forest in the South West of England - Bristol Zoo Project

A few more details surrounding the CAF development

information that’s new to me atleast

there will be one male and one female slender snouted crocodile with the hope they will breed

as well as this they’re hoping to start with 3 pairs of African grey parrots with the aim of reaching a flock of 20

I like how open BZP are being and I’m glad that they are going to fine detail to make sure that the area is perfect for the animals

also in other news, either an existing or new Bali starling is on display according to the website

Seems like a petty reason really & a shame - I actually don’t use any social media apart from X (which I still call Twitter) because generally it’s the quickest place to get information / updates, whereas the others they mention such as TikTok are more just for videos and LinkedIn is really just corporates wanting to prove a point about themselves.

There’s always been “misinformation” everywhere and I think this is a mistake, a good example of X was when Edinburgh Zoo posted about pride etc (which in my view was political but that’s not the point) and generally instead of expected trolls etc the reaction and response was generally very positive.

I entirely sympathise with them - eX!Twitter is a cesspool these days unfortunately.

It's very possible they've had a specific incident that's prompted this as well of course.

We can’t get into politics here but this isn’t a case of Bristol being petty - a large number of organisations and people including councils, police forces, media bodies and commercial brands have left citing safety, content moderation, and the platform’s increasingly polarising environment.

I applaud Bristol for doing this and hope other zoos and conservation organisations will join them.

You would hope zoos would be at the forefront of countering mis/disinformation regarding nature and Bristol leaving is just one less voice to speak up against it.

An excellent point that seems to be missed here & the fact that X/Twitter is one of the best ways to get live / fast information from an organisation.

I agree that Bristol has done the right thing.

When the owner seems to be more concerned with pushing out misinformation rather than countering it the only course of action is to hit them in the only place it hurts, the pocket. The only way to do that is to leave so it becomes less attractive for companies to advertise on the site, which is what is currently happening.

There does come a point where it becomes a pointless waste of time and resources to continue to 'speak up against' people who will not listen, and step back and wait for it all to implode on its own.
Everything has its day.

A good and right choice. Remember, X (ex Twitter) was an independent information social media platform before a certain US dystopian individual got involved. Thanks to non moderation of misinformation and "fake" news that has gone down the drain and the site is overtly commercialised, non-science and very unwelcoming now. So, no place for any seriously minded scientific or independent institution or individuals representant that institution to be involved with.

Now, I would like to go back to the real Bristol Zoo Project news ... The CAF area and or the new rhino development. Plus, plus loads more on new arrivals and births ...!

They have changed the fence in the giraffe area, what used to be rocks and an electric fence is now a mesh fence, they’ve also added mesh to all the fence bar the old red river hog area

the bali starlings are in with the pink pigeons however I saw neither unfortunately

but I was very lucky to see the cockatoo over the fence

a bit of a bad shot

also the zoo have announced. More information about Clifton conservation hub and that they are transferring the herbaceous border to BZP, as. Much as I like the wild feel, it will be nice to have a formal garden of sorts Creating a Conservation Hub at the Bristol Zoo Gardens site - Bristol Zoo Project

If they recreate the herbaceous half as good as the original, it should look splendid
