Your Best Lifeticks of 2024

Here are some new species for me in March 2024 when I visited Florida:
- Sun Bear - Lowry Park Zoo (have been to Oakland and San Diego in the past but I wasn't able to see their Sun Bears)
- Paroon Shark Catfish - Disney's Animal Kingdom

- Atlantic Spadefish - Lowry Park Zoo
- Clouded Leopard - Lowry Park Zoo
- Great Argus Pheasant - Disney's Animal Kingdom
- Crested jay - Disney's Animal Kingdom
- Fairy Bluebird - Disney's Animal Kingdom

I saw bonobos for the first time in 2024! It was a real delight. Saw them at the Milwaukee County Zoo.

I also saw (and interacted hands-on with) beluga whales for the first time at Shedd. It was absolutely magical. I always forget how enamored I am with cetaceans, but being able to feed and touch Naya was absolutely incredible.

Quite a special year for me. One that found me making up for dips/near misses of various years past which fills up about half of this list. Headlined by Beira, Maned Rat, Darwin's Fox, Chinchilla Rat, Pichi, Huemul and Southern River Otter. Was also glorious to grab back two species my friend @RatioTile used to have over me: Striped Dolphin and Forest Elephant.

1. Beira

*Laotian Rock Rat"

*Burmese Goral

Not sure when I'll be able to match all of these, but trust me I'll be trying ;)

I had a pretty good year in 2024. While not my busiest both zoo and wildlife watching wise, I still managed some real good trips including a long-weekend in Turks and Caicos, a return to the Rio Grande Valley, a pelagic whale watch out of Cape May, and, of course, my first visit to Australia being the biggest highlight of all. This list could easily be 2-3 times as long, especially with all the wonderful animals I saw in Australia, but I tried my best to narrow myself down to the best of the best. I ended up with a Top 30, though some of these could probably change if you asked again tomorrow! Captive animals with a double asterisk**:

-Red-Flanked Bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus -- a vagrant to a small NJ suburban backyard (thankfully the homeowner's were birders) seen the second week of January
-Caribbean Reef Shark Carcharhinus perezi
-Green Sea Turtle Chelonia mydas -- wild lifer, my first wild sea turtle
-Golden-Cheeked Warbler Setophaga chrysoparia
-Handsome Fruiteater Pipreola formosa**
-
Lehmann's Poison Dart Frog Oophaga lehmanni**
-Giant Girdled Lizard Smaug giganteus**
-Mexican Mantled Howler Alouatta palliata mexicana**
-Blue-Winged Warbler Vermivora cyanoptera -- previously a nemesis bird
-Chihuahuan Meadowlark Sturnella lilianae -- early Spring vagrant to CT, there is still some debate as to whether this was truly a Chihuahuan or a particularly pale Eastern. No official consensus was ever made and it remains off the State list, however all the markers matched so I feel confident enough to count it.
-Prothonotary Warbler Protonotaria citrea
-Sperm Whale Physeter macrocephalus
-Cuvier's Beaked-Whale Ziphius cavirostris
-Atlantic Blue Marlin Makaira nigricans
-Tiger Shark Galeocerdo cuvier
-Hooded Seal Cystophora cristata**
-Grey-Headed Flying Fox Pteropus poliocephalus
-Eastern Long-Beaked Echidna Zaglossus bartoni**
-Quokka Setonix brachyurus**
-Greater Bilby Macrotis lagotis**
-
corroboree frog Pseudophryne sp.** -- both Southern and Northern
-Regent Bowerbird Sericulus chrysocephalus**
-Satin Bowerbird Ptilonorhynchus violaceus
-Superb Fairy-Wren Malurus cyaneus
-
Dugong Dugong dugon**
-Burrunan Dolphin Tursiops (aduncus) australis
-Little Blue Penguin Eudyptula minor -- wild lifer, first wild penguin
-Eastern Barred Bandicoot Perameles gunnii
-Mountain Pygmy-Possum Burramys parvus**
-Leadbeater's Possum Gymnobelideus leadbeateri

~Thylo

Ughh some great ones in here too!
*Cuvier's Beaked-Whale (Been on 4 or so Pelagics with a chance for them, but no luck...some day)
*Hooded Seal (missed by less than a week probably at Mystic)
*Eastern Long-Beaked Echidna (was off-shown and sleeping when I was in Sydney)
*Leadbeater's Possum (missed them in Toronto- didn't even remember trying & Healesville temporarily didn't have any the year I went)

Visited loads of new collections around the UK in 2024 along with my first wildlife-oriented trips abroad:
1. Tuatara - Chester Zoo
2. Ethiopian Mountain Viper - London Zoo
3. Tibetan Camel Spider - Private trade (First Solifugid)
4. Black Caiman - Crocodiles of the World
5. Lace Monitor - Crocodiles of the World, CWP
6. Congo Caecilian - London Zoo
7. Cayenne Caecilian - London Zoo
8. Least Weasel - British Wildlife Centre
9. Ornate Bichir - Bolton Museum
10. Eurasian Golden Oriole - Caspe, Spain (Wild)
11. Common Water Shrew - Wildwood Trust

I mainly stick to mammals, so for me it was quokka and fanaloka at Stuttgart and grey-cheeked mangabey and tokean macaque at Saint-Martin-la-Plaine.

Other memorable moments were kori-bustard (only seen once before) and king bird-of-paradise (only seen twice before).

Missed out on the kaka :( it never showed on the rainy day we were there.

For me two more common species that had previously managed to evade me.

Red Duiker (or duiker of any species) - London
Gelada - Bristol

The big disappointment for me was not seeing the Chinese giant salamanders on my visit to London.

1. Southern Darwin's frog at ZSL London Zoo: Charming little animals that I was honestly not sure would ever make it to Europe, but definitely one of my zoo-visiting highlights of last year.
2. Ethiopian mountain adder at ZSL London Zoo: Difficult to choose between this and the Mangshan pit viper, another lifer, but I think this really gorgeous snake takes the top billing as my favourite new reptile of the year.
3. Javan green magpie at ZSL London Zoo: After failing to see them in 2023, it was excellent to finally connect (multiple times) with these beautiful birds.
4. Small Indian mongoose at ZSL London Zoo: Getting a good fairly prolonged view of one of these mongooses was another real highlight from last year's visits to London.
5. African snail predator at The Bug Parc: This zoo added a lot of species I had never even heard of before - this rather impressive aquatic bug was perhaps the most fascinating.
6. Christmas Island tree crab at The Bug Parc: A rather beautiful and active little crab that was another highlight from the Bug Parc.
7. Arctic fox at Jimmy's Farm: Perhaps the most long-overdue addition to my life list - despite being fairly common in the UK, especially at smaller collections, I had never seen them before July of 2024.
8. Dwarf Surinam toad at The Deep: A group of these small toads was a lovely surprise in the freshwater section, as I had no idea the aquarium kept this species.
9. Ant-mimicking conehead at The Bug Parc: Difficult to choose which of the new orthopterans would get a spot here - the Haldeman's shieldback, greater and lesser arid-land katydids and variegated grasshoppers were all brand-new and almost as deserving a spot.
10. Titicaca water frog at ZSL London Zoo: Another long-overdue connection, considering how common this species is becoming. Very charismatic frogs that were another highlight of the new reptile and amphibian house at London.
11. Black sea cucumber at ZSL London Zoo: It would be a bit unfair to not include a London Zoo invertebrate on my list, and a couple of these animated dog turds were a fascinating surprise in the big reef tank.

I did invite you! :P ;) I highly recommend going out of Cape May or a little further south as opposed to the New England/New York pelagics. I get the sense that your chances are just a bit better at the right time of year just a few hours south.
