Bird Paradise Bird Paradise news 2025

Little updates from Winged Sanctuary today, the exhibit planned for the Northern Bald Ibis seems to be mostly completed.

Have they started transferring the Northern Bald Ibis off-show or their number at Heart of Africa just naturally dwindles?

Got 2 more questions related to my recent visits:
1) How many Australian Pelicans are left at Wings of Asia? 2 or 3?
2) Any idea what species is this brown-green coloured dove at Lory Loft (picture attached)?

Apparently, there's also a Javan Myna inside Lory Loft as well - I didn't probe the keeper further whether it's a wild one (more likely?) or intentionally introduced inside.

1. the ibises were there on my visit last friday
2. 2.1 named Bruce, Gill and Dory
3. its a female Santa Cruz Ground Dove
4. should be a wild one

1.1 pelicans are left.

The Bald ibises naturally died, due to a mixture of different reasons, some of them died due to bashing into the mesh.

Superb fruit doves are still in Winged Sanctuary. Susie the Nene has passed on. Grey-headed Swamphen are no longer in WOA. Yellow-streaked lories are still in holding at Australian Outback as of last month. Red-fronted Barbets are in HOA. The catbird is in lory loft. The Pileated Parrot is no longer in Amazonian Jewels.

Yes Mysterious Papua has Solomon Island Eclectus

The Swamphens, Red-fronted Barbets, and Pileated Parrot have passed.

Thanks to another ZooChatter, I have come across this site that apparently shows the results of DNA testing being done on Blackie, our Magpie-Robin in Lory Loft. Unfortunately for us Zoo Nerds, his actual species is not a Seychelles Magpie-Robin but rather a different subspecies of Oriental Magpie-Robin.

A Copsychus saularis adamsi from Northern Borneo specifically.

Never judge a bird by its feathers: genetics unveils the true target of trafficking in morphologically similar Copsychus species
