Zoochat Challenge North America 2025

Going to try to actually keep up with this this year and just commit to doing it the day I visit. Looks like I'm the first to visit a non-US zoo/Mexican zoo this year for this competition! Visited the two zoos in Mérida today.

My total is at 27 currently.

Just double checking that European Mouflon (Ovis musimon/Ovis aries musimon) does not count, correct? Appears they are descended from domestic sheep, but not sure if the IUCN officially sees it this way or if they still consider it a subspecies of Mouflon.

Per Rule #7 in the opening post of the competition:
7. Hybrid animals and domestic animals do not count unless an exception is made.
The deer and the camel would not count. That said, per this post:
Reticulated/Rothschild's (generic) Giraffe and Masai Giraffe can be counted as two species, despite IUCN still only recognizing one species of giraffe.
An exception has been made to consider the generic and Masai giraffes separately, so you can count the generic giraffe now and Masai giraffe later if you see them.

New year, same first zoo! I was shockingly able to see almost every eligible species, just missing the silvery lutungs (which are temporarily off-exhibit), the slender-horned gazelle, and the common dwarf mongoose!

Cool to see that Franklin Park has Large Flying Fox now! Must be a new holding, they used to only have African bats.

Question: for rodents, are we counting things like harvest, pygmy, and zebra mice? Jirds, degus, gerbils, etc.?

Visited the other three facilities located in Mexico City yesterday before we flew back home this morning.

My total is now at 66.

Note that I may add one more to San Juan de Aragon, but there was no signage in that area of the zoo an I am waiting to see if I get a confirmation from someone more familiar with these zoos on the species. I have a feeling I know what it is, but still want to double check.

Yes, they do - but you are still at 21 because the gibbon does not.

Just double checking that European Mouflon (Ovis musimon/Ovis aries musimon) does not count, correct? Appears they are descended from domestic sheep, but not sure if the IUCN officially sees it this way or if they still consider it a subspecies of Mouflon.

I will go ahead and make an exception for this too, since it pretty much follows the same logic as Dingo (species descended from domestics but has been wild for a very long time) and I don't have a great rationale for allowing one and not the other.

On the other hand (and this is my fault for not being specific enough), Mazama is one of the deer that I intended to exclude from this challenge under "small deer" as I understand them to be solitary/paired animals... so you are at 56, the mouflon counted and the two brocket deer dropped.

51. Banteng (Bos javanicus)
52. Barasingha (Rucervus duvaucelii)

I will have to think about whether to count animals from SDZSP's Asian safari area... reason being it's a gray area between "normal public access" and "limited access". Anyone can theoretically book a tour through that part of the zoo, but it is very much not included in the general admission cost and is presumably limited to a certain number of spots per day.

Given that ungulates are a big part of the challenge this year I should have anticipated this and made a decision beforehand, so I apologize for that - but as it stands I do need some time to mull it over. Until then, just continue counting from what you have.

I figured the Asian species would be a bit of a grey area. Technically they can be seen from a couple of vantage points from the East Africa overlook on up along the new pathway to Tiger Trail and then on to Condor Ridge, but the view isn’t exactly good. For a good view you do have to pay at least $50-70 more for the Asian Cart Safari (or more for a caravan), but a lot of people that visit the Park do choose to do so to see those species. I am fine with whichever way you decide :)

On the other hand (and this is my fault for not being specific enough), Mazama is one of the deer that I intended to exclude from this challenge under "small deer" as I understand them to be solitary/paired animals... so you are at 56, the mouflon counted and the two brocket deer dropped.

I realized as I was entering the second species that these might qualify as one of the small deer species you said don't count, but figured I didn't get a message saying the first one didn't count so figured I'd include the second. Thank you for the clarification.

Follow up question for further clarification on Mouflon, are we counting that as a typical Mouflon subspecies (ie Ovis gmelini) or as the domestic sheep (ie Ovis aries). In the end, it likely doesn't matter as I am not aware of any actual Mouflon in North America, but figured I'd ask just in case.
You already had all 3 of these, so you are at 62.

Not sure how I missed these as I typically do a ctrl-F on my list just to make sure I don't include something a second time. I have put an updated list in the following spoiler noting these changes. The European Mouflon I have simply inserted where the Yucatan Brocket Deer was so I didn't have to renumber the entire list.

Total is now 62.

I will go ahead and make an exception for this too, since it pretty much follows the same logic as Dingo (species descended from domestics but has been wild for a very long time) and I don't have a great rationale for allowing one and not the other.
If mouflon count now, I've got another addition from the Toronto Zoo!
9. Mouflon (Ovis aries musimon)
