Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Former Species

For The RainForest, I'll add water monitor, blood ball python (I believe the zoo has- or had- a ball python as an education animal) and also a few birds that the RainForest had in the aviary in the 1990s- Boat-billed Heron and Sunbittern.

Yep! I believe there might still be some sort of monitor (not sure if it's water monitor) in one of the roundabout exhibits at the end of the reptile part of the RainForest's lower level.
There were white (albino?) crocs or gators in the Rainforest's rainforest at one point as a special exhibit.

I also remember a komodo dragon on the upper level. Another special exhibit.

Yep!!! It was a leucistic alligator as a special exhibit in 1998, I believe. That was before my time, but my mom saw it. And, yes, Komodo dragons were temporarily exhibited on the Upper Level. Today, Cleveland is the only major Ohio zoo not to have Komodo dragons (and penguins, for that matter).

Yeah, my mom saw the Albino crocodile back in '00 right before I was born. And personally I think they could keep Komodos in the top researcher hut.

Where could they keep Komodos in the researcher hut exactly? And I didn't know the albino crocodile (actually an American alligator) was there in '00... my mom saw it in '98

I think if they expanded the research hut exhibit into the riverbank next door and glassed it in, it'd make a decent sized Komodo exibit

I honestly can't believe that no one has mentioned Asian Elephants yet! The first one arrived on July 7th, 1907 (LOL 07/07/07!), and they had them (with occasional short stints without them) until their last one, the cow "Rainbow", left on August 27th, 1974.

I forgot about Asian Elephant! I knew the zoo has had them, but forgot to mention it. I guess I was thinking more about more recent (starting in the 90s) to today...

And we can remove Sunbittern because, as of Oct. 31, 2022, the zoo has them again in the rainforest (where they were in the 90s).

Can now add Fishing Cat and Colobus Monkeys as of June 2023.
Thanks to a 1996 map/guidebook I recently picked up, I can add a few more from the 90s:
- Muntjac (Northern Trek)
- Mouse Deer (RainForest)
- Various butterfly species (RainForest and African Savanna)
- Mata Mata Turtle (RainForest)
- Red Tomato Frog (RainForest)

It’s been a while and some changes have happened since the last update in 2023

As of January 2025 these species have a left at least that I know of:

Persian Onager (Replaced by American Bison)

Steller's Sea Eagle (Replaced by Andean Condors)

Malayan Tiger (Left in 2022)

Malayan Sun Bear (Left in 2022)

Cape Crested Porcupines, and Prevost Squirrel (Left the Rainforest before it closed in 2024)

Adding a few more-
  • Tree Monitor (was replaced by a Carpet Python before the RainForest closed)
  • Insects in The RainForest
  • Leafcutter Ants, Brazilian Salmon Pink Tarantula, Madagascar Hissing Cockroach, Australian Walking Stick, Twin Spotted Assassin Bug, Thorny Devil Walking Stick, Emperor Scorpion, Indian Ornamental Tarantula, Malaysian Walking Stick, Giant African Millipede (Exhibits were closed and removed before RainForest closed)

Another one that hasn’t been mentioned by anyone is the Black Footed Cats in the Primates Cats and Aquatics although their still listed on the zoo website (which is outdated) I haven’t seen them in years so they are probably long gone

Long gone. Last recorded photo of the zoo having them I can find is from 2012. The exhibit they were in is now for the Slow Loris and Bushbaby. Also leaving around that time were Pallas Cats.
