A female blue-billed curassow is now on exhibit in the unsigned exhibit next to the signed exhibit where the male blue-billed curassow resides.

The sign advertising the Cape Vulture Habitat has been modified to say "Opening Early 2025".

The Cambodia viewing area for Elephants of Asia remains closed due to an issue with the flooring. The photos below were taken on December 29 by holding my phone above the top of the barriers closing off the area and show a lot of the flooring has been removed.

Also, I thought the Pagoda style shade structure arches were new or were they always been there?!

Most of the zoos with Asian Elephants have been renovating and opening their Habitats that can hold Multi-Generational Herds and swapping Breeding Bulls in between them, so there is a chance for young females whether in the USA or from an international zoo like Dublin Zoo, to send some of their elephants for Cincinnati Zoo's New Elephant Habitat.

The Information Bulletin Board Siganges and Education Counters have been removed from the Thailand Pavilion, why is that?

Don't know if this has already been posted here, but in the latest edition of Zoo View they shared that 2-3 of the orangutans, the gorillas, and up to three of the chimpanzees have received breeding recommendations under their SSP.

Fingers crossed for plenty of little apes over the next year or two.

To update what @Great Argus had posted, the zoo posted on their social media they’ll remained closed until tomorrow and assess if they can reopen on Friday(01/10). The zoo could remain closed for much longer as a new fire in the Hollywood Hills started in the late afternoon, around 5 PM. To my fellow LA Zoochatters and anyone else affected by the fires, please be safe and be ready to evacuate. I may need to evacuate from Hollywood but waiting to see the announcement

The zoo remains closed today due to dangerous weather conditions. They do not appear to currently have too much risk from the fires, although I'm sure they're keeping a watchful eye.
Stay safe those of you that live in the greater LA area.

Praying the fires are controlled and the Zoo reopens tomorrow. The Eaton Canyon Nature Center in Pasadena wasn't so lucky. :(

Take care @Julio C Castro and others local to the LA countryside!

The whole fire season has already spiralled out of control as it is here (alas unsurprisingly so because 2024 has turned out to be the hottest season climate-wisse on record and the 1.5 climate change limit has already been breached ... and the temperatures and climate effects will go off the scale even more ... before 2030).

Sorry if this is off topic from the wildfire talk.I am safe from the fire even though I’m located near Altadena. This instagram post by Aussie ark on instagram has some interesting information on the Tasmanian Devils coming to the zoo, potentially arriving sometime in 2025 if everything goes well overseas.

It sadly was Rockie, who was their only sea lion. He was about 22 1/2 years old.
Thank you for the response Elena. Sad Rockie passed away, always saw him using the water platform. Glad I got to see him and learn bit behind him by staff back in early September, may he rest in peace. It looks like now the Sea Life Cliffs only houses Harbor Seals. Also may the zoo animals and staff and everyone else in/near Los Angeles be safe right now.

None too off-topic dear Zoochat poster! It is always great if people find out these tidbits about happening and new developments and events. Great find, ... I must say and thank you very much for doing so.

The posting is equally relevant to the USA/North America fora (the arrival zoo facilities being LA Zoo and San Diego Zoo) and Europe (Praha Zoo for its Antipodes exhibitry) and S.E. Asia (Singapore Zoo to get them for a probable marsupial fauna complex)!

Please European / Czech Zoos and Asia / Singapore Zoo regulars do take note here!!!!!

NOTA BENE: I should be clear that anyone in their right mind has concern and wishing well / take care/heed thoughts for our south Californian Zoochat community and in particular those close to the LA region and the Palissades area. The devastation is so ominuous and devastating that it might take years to recover or for some communities there is nothing left .... to go back to (with whole townships burnt up in the flames). Be safe and well and evacuate early ..., life and loved ones are far more precious than any possessions or property might be. I hope you can all jump back up .. in time!

It is the 4-year-old female jaguar named Estrela. She was recommended to Los Angeles in a regulation.gov application in April of last year.

@X213G -- Becoming a member of the L.A. Zoo is definitely the best way to familiarize yourself with its collection. The zoo's website usually has a discount code for new members and you will get free admission for twelve months after you join (even into 2026). You can also get discounted admission into a variety of other zoos (more information is available on the website).

As far as being more of a zoo enthusiast in general, I've found the posts by one of ZooChat's members, @snowleopard, to be greatly informative and inspiring. He has been to over 600 zoos all around the world and has posted many travel threads on this site. It's very interesting to compare the L.A. Zoo's exhibits to others around the U.S. and in different countries. Here's a link to his current thread on Asian zoos:
