I hadn't added up my totals for many years, as I've mainly been visiting zoos in Europe and Asia, but there was a time when I was racking up a huge number of zoo visits in North America. I was curious what my current total would be for AZA zoos and the link below lists all the AZA members.

Institution Status: Association of Zoos & Aquariums

There's a grand total of 237 AZA-accredited institutions, but I focused only on the facilities in Canada and the USA. Of those, I've toured 169 out of the 219 zoos, which puts me at 77%. I think the highest mark I ever attained was perhaps 81% years ago, but since then some of the zoos I've visited in the past have lost their accreditation and newly accredited zoos have cropped up as well.

It's fascinating to note that there's AZA-accredited institutions in countries such as Argentina, Bahamas, Bermuda, Colombia, Dominican Republic, South Korea, U.A.E. and others, with AZA having more of a global status these days. There's also 14 AZA-accredited related facilities, usually zoos with fewer species that collaborate with larger establishments.

Here's what I've seen.
  1. Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey - In the early 2010s
  2. Oakland Zoo, Oakland - In the early 2010s
  3. San Francisco Zoological Gardens, San Francisco - As recent as the late 2010s
  4. Steinhart Aquarium, San Francisco - As recent as the late 2010s
  5. Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, Washington - In 2017 or 2018
  6. Disney's Animal Kingdom, Orlando - In 2019
  7. Brookfield Zoo Chicago, Brookfield - In mid 2010s
  8. John G. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago - Last July
  9. Capron Park Zoo, Attleboro - Last visit was in the late 2010s
  10. Franklin Park Zoo, Boston - Went there last October
  11. Museum of Science, Boston - I went there a couple weeks ago
  12. New England Aquarium, Boston - Last visit was in November
  13. Walter D. Stone Memorial Zoo, Stoneham - Last visit was in November
  14. Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas - Last visit was last month
  15. Albuquerque Biological Park, Albuquerque - I went there in the summer of 2021 when it was 100 degrees+
  16. Central Park Zoo, New York - Took a trip there last April
  17. Roger Williams Park Zoo, Providence - Haven't gone since last August
So I've only visited 17 out of 237 available facilities which is only a little more than 7% with no viisits to AZA-accredited related facilities. This year, I hope to add at least 5 new facilities though I don't know if it's possible anymore

My question is little bit out of context. Do you plan on visiting Canadian zoo again in your next road trip to explore new zoos?

I've visited 33 Canadian zoos and aquariums and that total includes a whole bunch of little places. I have no immediate plans for any future road trips, but for sure there's basically zero chance of me adding on any new Canadian zoos. It's not that appealing to consider touring a bunch of obscure Ontario collections when for essentially the same price I could fly to Europe and see many of the great zoos of the world.

I have been to 29 AZA-accredited facilities out of the 48 total zoos I've visited:

Birch Aquarium, CA (2024)

74 between the U.S. and Canada. Trying to 100% at least the North American ones but it’s getting harder to hit them the further out they go. There are no more within 450 miles of my home.

So far for I’ve been to 7 AZA zoos:

Akron
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Columbus
North Carolina
Pittsburgh
Toledo

As well as 2 AZA aquariums:

North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke
Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

Also been to the National Aviary along with some Non AZA facilities like Zootatsic, and the Cleveland Greater Aquarium

Interesting thing to consider. Right now I have been to 138 facilities that are AZA accredited and all in the US. So, using the 219 total that you state for the US and Canada, I've seen 63% of the current AZA accredited facilities in those two countries.

My forthcoming trip to the facilities in California from Monterey and Fresno on south will add 8 new AZA accredited places to my total and bump it up to 146 facilities, or about 67%. Leaving you with a comfortable lead still.:p:D

I did a deep dive into AZA accreditation and it's amazing at how many American zoos have lost their accreditation in recent years. Salisbury, Jackson, Alameda Park, Living Desert in New Mexico, the excellent Alexandria, Riverside Discovery Center, Henson Robinson, Chahinkapa, Mill Mountain, Erie, Bramble Park, Bergen County, El Paso, etc. It's great that the AZA has clamped down on zoos because maintaining high standards is obviously the overall goal, but I was a bit surprised to see so many recognizable names as it had been a while since I checked the latest list.

The number of overseas AZA accredited facilities has almost doubled just in the past few years, with 25 zoos now and that includes 4 additions from United Arab Emirates. It's fascinating to see the expansion of accreditation across the globe and the master list is always fluid as some zoos gain or lose accreditation each year.

Here's the current total of 212 AZA-accredited U.S. zoos/aquariums and I’ve visited 168 of them = 79% (in bold)
