Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton Zoo News 2025

Had a great morning at Hamerton on Tuesday for my first visit here. All the animals are looking well looked after and can tell there is lots of ongoing development which is positive to see

Cheetah cubs were lovely to see and they were very active playing with each other and being curious at the window on what is going on outside. Truly amazing to be able to get as close to these cubs as Hamerton are allowing.

We had a real treat coming across the otters at feeding time and managed to get a great view of them all chomping down right next to the barrier.

Didnt get a chance to see the bears this time but will certainly be back more often to visit this charming place. My only disappointment was not realising this place existed before now after I moved to the local area a couple of years back.

First visit of the year to Hamerton , my second most visited zoo in recent years.

Forgive me if this has been mentioned previously but today there were 2 Lesser Spot Nosed Guenon in the cages at the end of the bear platform- there was at least one in the usual enclosure still. One of them was bigger than the others so hopefully a new male

Interesting I don’t recall any cages at the end of the bear platforms, do you have any photos?

If you walk up the steps onto the platform they are to your right. There are cages at the end of platform, you look down on them. They have been built for whatever eventually goes in the large open top enclosure near the bears ( it was stated the dingo were going in there some time ago

Exciting news from Hamerton's website:

Hamerton Zoo Park - Animal Park Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire

This week has seen the arrival of three Tuataras direct from New Zealand.
We understand that these are the first of their kind to be imported into the UK, and we are expecting the second part of the consignment very soon.
We hope to be able to feature more details on our social media pages in the early spring, so please watch this space.

Excellent news to hear of another UK holder for tuatara, even better to hear they’ve been sourced directly from New Zealand!

Intrigued by the wording of this part, given they are surely aware of Chester's history with the species (and the fact they are currently on show there). The first to be imported direct from New Zealand possibly? Not sure what route Chester's original animals took.

Excellent news that Hamerton have acquired tuatara but I'm puzzled by the comments about "first of their kind to be imported into the UK". Chester, of course, has the species currently and both London Zoo and the Bristol Museum have had them in the past.

Chester zoo definitely had Tuatara well before 1994, they had them on my first visit in 1991
Yes they had them prior, but the last 100% known import logged on ZTL is in 1994, they had them before then but it's not shown whether they came from NZ or not.

Just a thought that ZTL might not be 100% accurate and they DID ACTUALLY COME FROM NEW ZEALAND and not Fiji like the tuatara in the arctic.

ZTL is not the be-all and end-all for information relating to the provenance of any given species, and absence of explicit information on ZTL does not necessarily mean that the species did *not* arrive from overseas.

According to an article on the zoo’s website from July 2024, the zoo first held tuatara in 1962.

When going through old Chester annual reports and newsletters recently - as part of my task cataloguing the Bartlett Society archive - I seem to recall reading an item relating to the importation of the first individual in *1963* as an official gift from the New Zealand government marking the 10th anniversary of the coronation of Elizabeth II. A pair was also sent to Jersey Zoo by New Zealand at the same time, and for the same reason.

Similarly, the last individuals at London Zoo arrived a decade beforehand in 1952 to mark her initial accession to the throne.

Yeah I know, I'm going off what IS there, the ones before don't explicitly specify therefore not ruling it out either, just going off of the latest one with an exact source located

Sorry to disappoint, but...
Those expecting Sphenodon should check the logo used in Hamerton's piece on their website
https://tuataraatv.com

Which further reinforces the point I made previously about the reliability of ZTL...

ZTL is not the be-all and end-all for information relating to the provenance of any given species.

...given the fact that this has all directly resulted in misinformation and assumptions being posted to the site in question :p
