Any chance that the Chimelong park might send 1-2 females for Hongshan Forest Zoo to continue their work with breeding koalas in NE PR of China?

2.2 Yellow-throated Marten
0.1 Golden Takin will arrive at Nanjing Hongshan Zoo.
Nice additions for this northern zoo and probably both to have opportunities to breed both species! As I do not have any further info on the takin group ...., I do wonder how many golden takin they might have at the Zoo right now

It is known that this takin comes from Hangzhou Safari Park, but Hongshan should have already introduced other takins to fill their Tangjiahe New Area.

As we all know, Chimelong generally does not exchange animals with other zoos in China.

While this article is over a year old, I just read it and found it refreshing to read. I think there are perspectives and ideals shared by their director that would be brand new to some zoo leaders in Europe and the US. Good quotes too. I am looking forward to more contributions to the evolution of modern zoo practice coming out of Asia.
A Chinese friend told us that Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo might be one of the best in the world at self-promotion.
They've got tons of fans and some of them are seriously hardcore
so If you say anything even slightly negative about the zoo on Chinese social media, the fans will come for you like a pack of wolves:(:(:(

Indeed. Although Hongshan Forest Zoo is making continuous progress, the words and deeds of their fans have made many people dissatisfied with the zoo. In addition, the fans of this zoo will attack other zoos in China on major social platforms.

Recently, Hongshan Zoo constructed a temporary 400 meter corridor from the old giraffe enclosure to transport giraffes to their new home located in the African zone. This eliminates the need for transportation during the entire migration process.

This is an approach that is increasingly being used in state of the art zoos. Build a canvassed ramp with no visual cues ...! This makes sedation and hassle of coated transport obsolete and with giraffes any form of sedation always runs the risk of capture myopathy...and collapse.

NOTA BENE: the new facilities for the giraffe look quite good. Any of our PR China Zoochat forumsters care to comment on the new African area/savannah at Hongshan?

BTW: The giraffe look like southern giraffe Giraffa giraffa from southern Africa???

Since the area is not yet fully open, Chinese enthusiasts only have some "accidentally leaked" pictures, and we can only make some superficial judgments based on these. Based on the valid information so far, I personally think that it is impossible to make a relatively objective evaluation of "tour experience", "exhibition effect" and "popular science settings". But in terms of the animal lineup, the arrival of gorillas has undoubtedly raised the status of this area and Hongshan Forest Zoo in the Chinese zoo industry. (PS: The issue of the lineage of giraffes in Chinese zoos is not so clear at present. Sometimes even managers cannot give a firm answer to the specific subspecies)

I once visited the African zone under construction last year, but due to the zoo's requirements, I am unable to disclose pictures now. As the zoo is surrounded by cities and there is no more construction area, the area of the new area is limited. The zoo cannot present a "stunning and large-scale" exhibition area here, but there will be some things to look forward to in terms of detailed construction.
The giraffes at Hongshan Zoo used to be of the East African type, similar to Reticulated giraffes, with populations from Japan. However, they have now introduced South African giraffes as a new breeding force.

Recently, Hongshan Zoo constructed a temporary 400 meter corridor from the old giraffe enclosure to transport giraffes to their new home located in the African zone. This eliminates the need for transportation during the entire migration process.
The old Giraffe enclosure will be renovated to serve as a display area for lions.
