Bristol Zoo Project Bristol zoo project news 2025

I wonder if this new walk through avairy could coincide with the arrival of the negros bleeding heart doves that had been mentioned at some point previously?

As much as I’m hoping they arrive soon, I doubt they would have them in a walkthrough setting seeing as there are none in Europe they will probably want to establish a stable population likely even off show to begin with

Important to note that the statement includes this caveat:
]

The latest in the round of tit for tat announcement exchanges between the zoo and the opposing forces to the sale. With contracts exchanged they are a step nearer to completing the deal but much still depends on the outcome of the Judicial review in May I guess. For the zoo's sake I really hope this doesn't drag on too much longer.

I think it’s the old butterfly tunnel from BZG. You can see it in the recent drone footage.

My post from last Saturday:
Confirmed on visit today that the old butterfly poly tunnel from BZ will be moving to BZP to go on cleared site of Leap of Faith. Will not hold butterflies but free flying birds and (the advertised?) reptiles at the end.

My post from last Saturday:
Wow, sorry, don't how I'd forgotten about that! When I read that document it sounded like news to me, perhaps I was too caught up in the African Forest exhibit talk to remember? Either way I missed out on the butterfly tunnel when I visited BZG but hopefully it can be put to very good use for this.
As I said the plans say 'Malay mouse deer' will inhabit the temporary tropical house, but from a quick look at ztl it's not entirely obvious which subspecies we will see, though any option would be one that is very underrepresented in Europe as far as I can tell.

No worries, it’s great to hear of the full plans going in.

I would presume a more threatened sub species but I don’t know what one unless someone else knows which sub species are more endangered

Either the Philipinne species or the newly discovered one in Vietnam.
(both of which You can conveniently forget about BZG acquiring them ... anytime soon).

For the Philippine species I do hope a national program can be set up in the Philippines with the Balabac kanchil. On the island of Luzon the Avalon Zoo near Manila is the one with a small breeding group.

I really do wonder if other zoos or private captive-breeding centers in the Philippines maintain the species ... (most evidently not the national Manila Zoo in Malate Park).

The species only occured/occurs on several islands South-East off Palawan: Balabac, Bugsuk and Ramos. The Katala Foundation works on Bugsuk and de facto it seems that population is relatively well-protected (as the Philippine cockatoos also use the island).

Some time back 8 Balabac kanchil were transferred to Calauit to a captive breeding facility (the same as the Calamian deer ...). However, the animals escaped and in 2005/2006 the population on the islands was 21 individuals.

You wont see any subspecies in the short perhaps medium term. All such imports are banned because of Bluetongue, even now the disease status either side of the channel is the same.
The continued difficulties in moving animals to and from mainland Europe will likely see the reduction of species in the UK, not the increase.
I haven't checked, but presumably all bird movements are stopped now too?, now the whole country is under bird-flu restrictions - and they took around a year to be lifted last time...

So depending. On how many they have they might get Philippine mouse deer from Chester, does anyone know how many are up there?

I am sorry to announce that Tom the giraffe has passed away

I have attached the article that the zoo have put out, personally he was one of if not thee most iconic animal at BZP and he will be thoroughly missed

Saying goodbye to Tom the giraffe - Bristol Zoo Project
I’m gutted about this news. He was an absolutely stunning animal & Ive never seen another giraffe like him. Heartfelt wishes to his staff.

Visited today

the old sanctuary garden is being redone to be the new herbaceous border and a picnic area

As much as I’m not usually a fan of picnic area conversion the space was a bit dull so the new formal gardens and stuff will be lovely

I asked 2 members of staff about the new tropical house

1 said that it’s not been confirmed yet what’s going in there

the other said what was on the plans and “piegons” I asked what type but I don’t think they were a bird keeper

but overall a very enjoyable visit

New fundraising appeal for the African Forest development launched:

African Forest Appeal - Bristol Zoo Project

Direct link to Crowdfunder:

https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/african-forest-appeal

Some nice rewards on there for anyone really interested in the animals that will be held.
I don't ever remember Bristol Zoo Society appealing for money like this before for a new enclosure. It must surely result from all the delays in the sale of the old site compromising new developments, even the one for the Gorillas & Co. They said the new enclosure would be four times larger than the existing one in the old zoo. I thought they meant the outdoor island but it doesn't look that big from this- not that it matters, the size of the indoor space is far more important really. The African Grey parrots will be 'rescues' I see, very sensible.

Beat Wood has plaques from some kind of similar fundraising from when it was being built.
