Global Captive Orca Population

What surprises me is that she says verbatim "I opposed the transfert to Japan". I had no idea a minister could entervene directly in such a petty matter, especially since there are legal bodies responsible for delivering the permits, with specific criteria that have little to do with animal welfare.

The whole thing is just so bizarre to me... do we even need to have a national discussion for like 12 animals?
It is also exhausting as well. You would think that a country like France would be eager to get them transferred out , to no longer have to deal with cetaceans at the political level
I know those complain about Kobe SSW’s size, but it is also a brand new habitat.

And the infrastructure of MLFs orca stadium has been an ongoing issue- it is only 25 years old and it inadvertently caused a passing.
Hopefully a proper solution can be implemented, AKA a move to Loro Parque.

That's very cool. Lucky you. It's in good condition for being so old. I wonder how much of the skeleton they have.

I heard they have a small display about him somewhere in the park, did you see that too? Not sure if they still have it or not?

There are a bunch of captive orca skeletons on display around the world, but as far as I'm aware, none that you can actually touch like this.

I went to Dudley zoo today and I got to hold the orca they had, cuddles, tooth! It was quite intact, which was surprising, but I was wondering has anyone done this before or could you do something similar like this at a different facility?
That looks much more like a sperm whale tooth. Specially considering Cuddles died young and was not a big whale.

Inside it was much more hollow and the tooth would have been mostly covered by the gums. So you could only seen the tip of the full tooth

Unfortunately the Marineland situation is not much closer to being resolved.

Loro Parque, a marine zoo in Spain that wants to receive the killer whales from Marineland, told the BBC this week the current proposal was "wholly unsuitable" and that they were best positioned to care for them.

But now Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the French ecology minister, said she would speak to colleagues in Spain, Italy and Greece about creating a different sanctuary together. However, her proposal has few other details and has been criticised.

Kiessling did say such a solution might be possible if there was more extensive research and planning but "such a process could take years, leaving the two Marineland [orcas] in a facility that is being wound down".

Marineland, who are still paying to look after the orcas, said a move to Loro Parque as soon as possible was in the best interests of the animals' welfare. They have asked the ecology ministry to approve the transfer.

The whale sanctuary in Canada applied to the French government to take in the orcas last year but their bid was rejected in January.

They were told the site they had selected in Nova Scotia was too far away and that the water there was too cold for Wikie and Keijo, who have spent their whole lives in southern France.

I really hate how everybody goes on and on about animal welfare but when there's a pressing situation where animals need to be moved asap everybody is sitting around arguing for their own interests and doing absolute zip for animal welfare.

Whole heartedly agree; it's really disheartening to see each side trying to push their own agendas and not appearing the least interested in figuring out the best solution for these whales.

Quite obviously the only option here is to send them to Loro Parque asap - more harm will come to them if they're left in a run down facility that has already been closed for two months now.

They should already be in Loro Parque - it's the only option and none of these other ideas should even be being discussed. Not everyone supports cetaceans in captivity, but it is so hypocritical to be yelling about welfare and still leave the whales sitting in a closed park when they could already be somewhere fully equipped to care for them. Set the ideals aside and actually do something best for the animals gosh dang it!

Yes! When I did advanced career camp as a teen at Seaworld San Antonio, they actually let us hold one of Keto's teeth that he had lost when he lived there. It's super cool!

Sadly it seems lots of groups would rather let whales die instead of having them move to a different park. Although admittedly small, Japan was willing to take all four whales to parks with solid water quality. After Moana died, instead of getting the whales out of Marineland ASAP, they let Inouk die as well. I can only hope the same doesn’t happen to Wikie and Keijo. Truly disgusting.

Good news for Loro Parque, Wlkie and Keijo’s permits to move has been approved!:DThis is excellent news and Loro Parque should soon have 6 orcas! In the source they say Wikie is gaining weight and possibly pregnant which would make sense as it was reported that she was off birth control for a while last year but it was made by one voice so likely not true

AMAZING NEWS… finally this whole fiasco can come to an end. It was dragged on much longer than it should’ve. If Loro Parque gets breeding back on track they may take their expansion plans off ice…

Finally some common sense! I guess the move will be very soon, maybe even before Morgan give birth?

Really really positive news!

The best situation for both orcas and hopefully these two are able to be moved across to Loro Parque asap. The goal should be to get them across before the end of next month.

With Morgan also due soon it's set to be quite a turbulent time for Loro Parque with their first new whales in more than a decade. Let's hope these two help rejuvenate their pod which has recently dwindled to just three; Tekoa, Adan and Morgan.
