Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2025

The 4-year-old gorilla male Moos has unexpectedly died at Beekse Bergen. In recent weeks, he was less active and showed signs of illness, for which he was treated. Unfortunately, this was to no avail. The exact cause of death is still under investigation.

or that move came out to give BaoBao more rest?
that move is also unclear to me.
it could also point towards the behavior of Mandji herself.
Someone asked why on their facebook page but no answer given yet. Also, previously the 'main' group was actually smaller than the other group, now its 5 and 4.

Don't know ... but Bao Bam was of course a silverback gorilla that had little experience of socialising with a gorilla troupe for a major part of his life. He also had just the one offspring in his elder age and not for want of availability of female suitors... (sure this is all a tad overt .... speculation, just I have an inkling it is this and perhaps providing stability to the other family group as has been suggested.

He is 40 now, so certainly an elderly silverback. Considering he spent essentially the first three decades of his life in captivity without females it's possible he's needing a break; especially with his young son also recently turning three and beginning to mature.

Additionally, I don't know how close Mandji and Nemsi are, but they could have been causing issues together as is sometimes the case with mother/daughter duos who are quite close.

Well, no reason seems to have been given. Anyway Nemsi takes care of Kiango. As a foster mother.
And Mandji has an experience or that former troop has an experience of kidnapping a child.
Anyway, that move will on the benefit of one or both groups.

It's good that Nemsi is caring for Kiango following his mothers tragic loss a few years ago.

Nemsi isn't the most genetically valuable female. Although I think she may receive another recommendation eventually, it's really good that she's been given the opportunity to mother another infant in the meantime.
