I have always understood until now that new great apes enclosures in Zurich are on hold because for what they want to build, the architectural and technological developments are not far enough along yet. Especially for the 'Sumatra Rainforest' (and others with very tall aviaries, like Islands and Kaeng Krachan) with its +35m high aviary and treetop walkway is technically very difficult and I suspect they want to gain experience with the Pantanal aviary first. But first the gorillas will leave the great apes building for the Kongo exhibit planned around 2030-2033.

Is this really still used at Zurich in 2025?

Yes it is.... Though this picture manages to make it look even ghastlier than it already is. Indoors is significantly better though, but all together still a very weak exhibit.

This Orang cage is absolutely terrible yet Zurich is walking this ! I have to ask WHY?

I suspect a lot of people are giving Zurich the win purely on the grounds of the elephant exhibit, combined with the fact that Paris is about as poorly-equipped with category exhibits and species but with nothing as flashy.

I think that is fair enough for some but in what is a relatively even contest I think the dreadful orangutan prison cage more than cancels out the bonus of the elephant exhibit

Its opponent manages to have a worse enclosure. 3 small indoors with no access to outdoors until the new outdoor aviary is completed.

I note nobody else has tried to defend this Zurich cage! It might be average for squirrel monkeys or good for marmosets . I also note that there are no plans to improve this embarrassment for probably a decade -for a zoo of Zurich's standing that is not acceptable and deserves a beating

Having visited both Zurich and Paris Menagerie within the space of a few weeks last May, and hence seen both exhibits in question soon after one another, I definitely contest that claim.

Although definitely very poor, the Paris orangutans having access to multiple indoor exhibits like this whilst they await the refurbishment of their outdoors:

...still very much trumps the Zurich orangutans being stuck with a single indoor exhibit which looks like this for the foreseeable future:

The Zürich orangutans do actually have a second indoor enclosure, not quite as big as the first, just visible to the right, and I could be mistaken but I believe there is at least one more offshow? And of course they do have outdoor access, abysmal though it may be, which the Paris ones don't. Strangely, and I seem to be in the minority here, I actually thought the indoor orangutan enclosure at Zürich wasn't too bad, only that the outdoors was appalling. I certainly prefer the indoors at Zürich to Paris, with natural substrate, mesh walls for climbing, and several ropes and branches. Paris' outdoor enclosure is better (but still awful), although from reading what others are suggesting, they don't even have access to that at the moment as it is being renovated (which is of course fantastic in the long-term, but for the purposes of this Cup hinders them). As an enclosure, it is indefensibly awful, and I don't want to come across as though I am in support of it, as I am not and I cannot wait for the Ape House to be demolished and for all three species to move out. But on my Zürich visit, and to this day, I got the impression that if the indoor area was connected to a better outdoor enclosure, nobody would complain.

I do feel as though, especially with the outdoor enclosure, closed, these two atrocious enclosure cancel one another out, and the quality elsewhere at Zürich earns them a comofortable win. Not just the world-class elephant complex, but the beautiful reef displays and the excellent theming throughout. Definitely not a strength for either zoo and Zürich got lucky, really, that they drew it against similarly weak oppositon.

A fairly close one, with the Paris duo picking up support in the final day or so but never quite managing to pull ahead:

Zurich - 63/120 points - 52.500%
Paris - 57/120 points - 47.500%

More significantly, Zurich now has a win on the board and the die-hard fans of the Swiss collection can stop complaining :p:D:p
