Does anybody know if the two new speces of Cissa magpie that were announced in one of the monthly 'births and arrivals' lists are onshow yet, or if there are plans to move them onshow soon (presumably if so it will be to the Pheasantry)?

So far no news or sightings of them.

December arrivals and births:
  • 0.1 Hamerkop from Köln
  • 1.2 Kikuyu guerezas from La Vallée des Singes and Gdansk (the zoo keeps a nice guereza group mixed with gorillas, those are of unclear/hybrid subspecies, I have no idea if those will be sent out now when the zoo obtained pure lineage animals, or they all get merged)
  • Blue blubber jelly (Catostylus mosaicus) from private farm/trader
  • 1.1 Golden-shouldered parrots from private
  • 3.4 Lesser kestrel from Hodonin (both Prague and Hodonin keep nice breeding flocks of this species and produced chicks are rewilded annually in Bulgaria)
  • 1.0 Caracal from Zoopark Zajezd - return of this species after few years break
  • 0.1 Blue-winged kookaburra from Frankfurt
  • 2.2 Tasmanian devils from Hobart
  • 0.0.4 Baja California rock lizards from private breeder
  • 0.1 Northern treeshrew from Jihlava
  • 1 Brown lory from Vogelpark Turnersee (could this be return of the final bird from Turnersee, or have they bred?)
  • a batch of fish bought from a local fish farmer/trader, to re-fill exhibits in Indonesian jungle house, nothing rare but nice to see that empty tank near lift will get life again: Spotted scat, Ghost catfish, Finescale tigerfish, Siamese algae eater, Moonlight gourami, Spotted green pufferfish, Redtail sharkminnow, Banded archerfish
births:
- Salvadori's fig parrot chick, red kangaroo, common squirrel monkey, Javan gibbon (already mentioned), 0.3 sitatunga (another one born on 1st of january), 2 rock doves (Prague keeps pure wild lineage), 0.1 sable antelope, Chacoan mara, 2 Mindanao lorikeets, spotted imperial-pigeon, bushy-tailed jird, Wagner's gerbil

I´m on a lookout for arrival of capuchin monkeys now that the new house looks basicaly completed, but still nothing...

Construction of the Polar bear complex will begin on 22nd January, the contract has been signed today.

Maximum building period is 42 months, final price is slightly below 30 million €, which is about 10 milllion lower than expected.

Still a ridiculous amount, sounds good for polar bears, but especially for the contractors...
The worst thing about this is that the current director expects the exhibit will last probably only 10-15 years. He said that in an interview several months ago. The problem is that he only wants to meet the current EAZA conditions and that's it. Although he knows too well that the demands will increase in the future. He doesn't plan ahead of time...

And this is Pragues biggest problem with many of their (more or less) new exhibits

Every director plans ahead of time, barely any plans ahead of "when I am not in charge anymore" time.

And it's perfectly in line with directors previous repeated statements/philosophy that in his eyes, lifespan of any exhibit is cca 20 years maximum...

True, an exhibit is super modern the first 10 years, well to do / regarded as presentable the next 10 years and out of date the next 10 years and beyond ....

Still a ridiculous amount, sounds good for polar bears, but especially for the contractors...
@lintworm, the contractor / building costs are in the local currency (Czech Koruna ...) I suppose (then it looks a little bit less in costs effectively).

Quick technical question for those lucky enough to be Prague regulars - I'm toying with some date options for a possible visit but wouldn't want to miss out on that one particular duck species. ;)

Are the Brazilian Mergansers on show all year round? Haven't heard otherwise but would be a shame to not know and turn up to find they're still shut away for winter. :)

I was at the zoo during winter times, it doesn't seem like the mergansers were suffering from winter backstage, but any more regular-than-me visitors would be very much welcome to correct me.

I visited today and the mergansers are not on show during the cold months.

2 Cissa hypoleuca are visible in the backstage area of the sichuan haus through the nest on the main wall, I've seen them this sunday.

-Guerezas are now off-show as a new group has arrived and has to adapt to the new exhibit and to gorillas
.
- The former guereza enclosure (near to gibbon and spider monkey exhibits) is under renovation and seems pretty ready
.
- All the birds of the pheasantry were kept inside during my visit 3 days ago
.
- Yellow-headed vultures were not on-show, with a steller's eagle in their exhibit
.
- A lesser jerboa inhabits the former senegal galago exhibit, which seems to have left
.
- Black-faced ibis are back on-show and the horned kaimichis are now in the main south-america aviary, while southern kaimichis are in the pelican's pond (probably they've realised was not a great idea to keep curassows and two species of kaimichi all together)

I visited yesterday and the Thorold’s deer were in the Chinese goral enclosure. No sign of the Chinese goral or the bharal. Although a new metal fence has been put up on the southern perimeter of the bharal enclosure.
Does anyone know if they still hold Chinese goral and bharal?
