So far no news or sightings of them.Does anybody know if the two new speces of Cissa magpie that were announced in one of the monthly 'births and arrivals' lists are onshow yet, or if there are plans to move them onshow soon (presumably if so it will be to the Pheasantry)?
Construction of the Polar bear complex will begin on 22nd January, the contract has been signed today.
Maximum building period is 42 months, final price is slightly below 30 million €, which is about 10 milllion lower than expected.
The worst thing about this is that the current director expects the exhibit will last probably only 10-15 years. He said that in an interview several months ago. The problem is that he only wants to meet the current EAZA conditions and that's it. Although he knows too well that the demands will increase in the future. He doesn't plan ahead of time...Still a ridiculous amount, sounds good for polar bears, but especially for the contractors...

And this is Pragues biggest problem with many of their (more or less) new exhibits
True, an exhibit is super modern the first 10 years, well to do / regarded as presentable the next 10 years and out of date the next 10 years and beyond ....Every director plans ahead of time, barely any plans ahead of "when I am not in charge anymore" time.
And it's perfectly in line with directors previous repeated statements/philosophy that in his eyes, lifespan of any exhibit is cca 20 years maximum...
@lintworm, the contractor / building costs are in the local currency (Czech Koruna ...) I suppose (then it looks a little bit less in costs effectively).Still a ridiculous amount, sounds good for polar bears, but especially for the contractors...
I was at the zoo during winter times, it doesn't seem like the mergansers were suffering from winter backstage, but any more regular-than-me visitors would be very much welcome to correct me.Quick technical question for those lucky enough to be Prague regulars - I'm toying with some date options for a possible visit but wouldn't want to miss out on that one particular duck species.
Are the Brazilian Mergansers on show all year round? Haven't heard otherwise but would be a shame to not know and turn up to find they're still shut away for winter.![]()
