In other unfortunate news, the zoo announced the passing of (0.1) Calypso, their 12-year old Capybara, who was humanely euthanized on January 10th.

A black-handed spider monkey was born to parents Olive and Mateo, this brings their troop up to 14 individuals

Recently, the zoo announced the loss of (0.1) Sapphire, their female Siamang, who passed away after failing to recover from a wellness exam. At the age of 41 years, Sapphire was notable for surpassing the median age of her species, making her one of the oldest siamangs in an AZA zoo prior to her passing.

The zoo has acquired Cody, a male Salmon-Crested Cockatoo, who will hopefully be a companion for their resident salmon-crested cockatoo, Goofy.

Recently, the zoo announced the arrival of nine Black-Faced Whistling Ducks (0.0.9), and a five-year-old Black Howler Monkey named (1.0) Reggie, who has since been paired with (0.1) Raina, one of the zoo’s female howlers.
All ten animals arrived back in January, and are now on display in the Rainforest Revealed’s Flooded Forest enclosure.

A surprise Black-Handed Spider Monkey birth was announced today. The female was on birth control so the baby came as a surprise to the keepers and staff as well.

Sully a Black-Handed Spider Monkey had to have his arm amputated following a break due to his arm getting stuck in the exhibit mesh.

Recently, the zoo announced that (1.0) Doc, their last remaining “Reticulated” Giraffe, had passed away after combating a series of age-related health complications.

What a shame, but now I’m glad I got to see her right before her passing.
Pepper will be dearly missed by many, and I hope her successors will make good use of her now-vacant retirement home in Wild Florida, regardless of their species.

White-Nosed Coatis Rita and Sky are pregnant. They are moving off display to relax and prepare, but will return to exhibit once the kits are born and old enough to explore.

Normally, I wouldn’t cover announcements that are actively developing until the respective zoo makes an official statement.
However, in this particular case, it was confirmed by the Brevard Zoo that a keeper was “scratched” by a jaguar earlier today; which happened while they were feeding the animal through protective mesh.
At the time this post was written, the extent of the employee’s injuries are not yet known.

The zoo has renovated their Burmese Python/African Rock Python enclosure to allow the snakes more opportunities to engage in naturalistic behaviors
