I totally agree. I believe that the females would be coming from South Australia (Not certain) possibly Monarto ( A trade for the elephants in a way) but I love the current hyena exhibit personally but I believe that they could do with 1. Slightly more space for them to roam around 2. a higher viewing point (To look down on to them) and 3. A larger swimming pool as right now yes they have one and Sabi loves it but it could probably be bigger in my opinion.

That would be Monarto Safari Park in that case.

@Patrick Keegan advised that Tasmania Zoo intend to receive an Australian born female (to pair with their imported male), with these two being the candidates:

0.1 Zawati (01/11/2023) Etana x Mahali - Sydney

0.1 Utundu (23/01/2024) Endesha x Kanzi - Monarto

Utundu is the Monarto female and could potentially come with her half-sister, Tufani. Utundu’s mother is the dominant female of her pack, so transferring out Utundu will minimise the possibility of conflict between Utundu and her older sister (who currently ranks second). Tufani ranks below all three females, so keeping her in the pack wouldn’t affect the hierarchy in anyway, so ultimately it’ll depend on whether Perth Zoo want two females or one.

Perth Zoo Update - March 2025

I visited Perth Zoo today and noticed quite a few changes:

• Amazonia & Eco-Friendly Toilets: The eco-friendly toilets next to Amazonia were closed off, and I think they might be getting renovated. Last year, around the time the baby squirrel monkeys were born, there was a sign in Amazonia saying "Shhh... big changes coming soon." I also spoke to a docent who mentioned that Amazonia is quite old and that the zoo plans to expand it and bring in new animals. Of course, docents aren't always 100% accurate, but it seems likely that something big is happening.
• Primate Trail & Amazonia Updates:
• The black-and-white ruffed lemurs have been moved from Amazonia and the top of the Primate Trail to the old capuchin enclosures.
• The emperor tamarin has been relocated from the third exhibit in the Primate Trail to the top, where the ruffed lemurs used to be.
• The former emperor tamarin exhibit is now empty, along with two other habitats that previously housed capuchins-leaving three vacant enclosures in the Primate Trail.
• Nocturnal House: The entrance is under construction. Visitors now have to enter through the exit, where there is a door on the right that serves as both the entrance and exit.
• Main Lawn: The Main Lawn looks way better than before—| barely even recognize it!
  One of the old toilet blocks has been demolished, and a new one has been built in its place, though it hasn't opened yet. With all these changes, I wonder if the zoo might allow the gibbons to walk over our heads in this area in the future.
• Primate Crossing: It looks like work has just started on the Primate Crossing, as they've begun putting up the bars for the ropes. It'll probably be a few months before it's finished, but it's exciting to see progress being made.
• Also, Permai's pool still has running water for some reason.
• What do you think?
• With three empty exhibits in the Primate Trail and Amazonia possibly getting renovated and expanded, what new animals do you think the zoo might relocate or bring in? Could we see more primates, a new South American species, or even a larger mixed-species habitat? Let me know your thoughts!

The Ruffed Lemurs have moved to exhibit G and Iand the Emperor Tamarins had moved to the old Walkthrough exhibit and the exhibits F,E and between K and L is empty I think a Nocturnal house like Taronga and Memphis zoo will be really good

Visited PZ today and I'd just like to recap on some things said.... Firstly from what I could see the reason that amazonia was closed off was the same situation as to why the top of the aussie bush walk and red panda exhibit area was closed off last year because of some water or unground piping issues. Yes maybe your right they probably will upgrade amazonia but I dont think thats the current reason why its closed as of right now.

Secondly (I know this only becuase I actually went to their enclosure today) there must be some ruffed lemurs either still in amazonia or being kept up the back because there was the regular number of ruffed lemurs in the primate trail today (2) and there is usually 2 in amazonia anyway and i'm certain I couldn't see any others at all in the primate trail ruffed lemur connected enclosures.

Thirdly for some reason there were loads of orangutans out today not sure why but I could see 6, Dinar was out with another female, and Sekera was out (I only know that becuase I'm pretty sure she's the one that puts the finger over her eye) and then 3 others probs Utama and Puteri but I dont know the last one.....

Fourthly I noticed Jaya was a bit skinnier today and was far more angry than he usually his (he was charging the glass at me when I was just standing there on my phone not provoking him at all which was weird. But I did get some good photos

I will add more later but these were just my observations from today

Fourthly I noticed Jaya was a bit skinnier today and was far more angry than he usually his (he was charging the glass at me when I was just standing there on my phone not provoking him at all which was weird. But I did get some good photos

In 2018, Jaya was diagnosed with a ectopic thyroid carcinoma and had a tumour removed. At the time, he was given a prognosis of nine months to live (following the surgery).

In 2023, it was noted that due to Jaya’s extensive medical history, he undergoes regular checks including radiographs to confirm the tumours haven’t returned.

In short, it’s remarkable Jaya is still with us today at 16.5 years.

Dinar (1987) was recently noted by @marmolady to be sharing an exhibit with Teliti (2009); and Sungai (2011) and Lestari (2012) were sharing an exhibit on that same visit. I have also seen the latter recently on socials sharing an exhibit with her mother Pulang (1993).

Dinar and Teliti are an unrelated pair; but it appears the groupings are purely for social interaction purposes given the zoo are on a breeding hiatus.

Perth welcomed a pair of Agoutis in 2023 (a male and a female). They've always been on display in the Primate Trail with the other monkey species.

Given that would I be right in saying that they do not live together. And if so do you know what other primate enclosure the other agouti shares with?

Not sure, I was under the impression the pair did live together. Agouti are a social species, and groups usually compromise of a pair and their offspring.

It's possible there were two there, you just didn't catch the other one.

Oh I think the agoutis share exhibits with the golden-lion tamarins sometimes.

Yeah possibly but I don't think I've ever seen them together but It might just be rare to see them like the porcipines

Hey Steve thats all good, yes they previously weren't connected but back in the day I mean back back back in the day there were cotton top tamarins (before the agouti) in those enclosures before they were connected but I dont know when the golden lion tamarins started occupying it.

Yes these connected enclosures with the golden lion tamarins and the singular agouti that I have seen are yes the first and last enclosures of the primate trail Jambo This is what I have been refer to

Where the lemurs are they are over hard tunnels but with the Agoutis and Golden Lion tarmarin there is a tunnel connecting them to there second exhibit but it is on the side of the exhibit And for the Cotten top tamarin the zoo has two separate exhibits for them Ajd for the empty exhibits the overhead tunnel is over the viewing area which also connects to the Ruffed lemur Exhibits. I think the Ring tailed lemurs will be moving back to the primate trail for when the Savannah is under construction.

@Jambo on my recent visit to Perth zoo the Black and white ruffed Lemurs where relocated to the three exhibits to the right towards the top and the Emperor tamarins where moved to the big exhibit at the back of the Primate trail.

The zoo just confirmed via email that both agoutis Amami & Astro are co-habitating with Lyra & Ross.

I have added some more photos of Ross and Lyra below and one of the agoutis.

Assuming Ross is male and Lyra is female.... I am wondering whether they are a breeding pair or not someone may have info or I will ask a keeper/docent on my next visit.

They are some of the best smaller primates in the zoo in my opinion, I think they are so cool and fun to photograph
