Chester Zoo Baby giraffe after margaret

A female was born, think it was called Niamh but was weak and died after a week or two.

Aww that's a shame. Thanks for the info, I've wondered for ages as there is no reference to another baby after Margaret. I'm so glad I found this ZooChat as I can find out the answers now that the Zoo don't tend to broadcast!

I was wondering also what happened to Strolch the Spectacled Bear, after all the coverage on Zoo Days and it ending in the choice was whether or not to put him to sleep, nothing further was heard. The next I hear is the female had been killed by another (strange) male!! The Zoo seems selective in what it tells us and as Members, i think we all get to know the animals and want to know what's happening!!

Yeh strolch got put down due to the eye infection/going blind. a new male was brought in, but he ended up fighting with the female, resulting in her dying before the keepers could split them up. shame.

As you say such a shame, I'd pieced it together and presumed that was what had happened. Such a shame as he may well do the same with another female so will breeding happen?

Who knows. There is problems obtaining some animals in Europe, but then again there at south lakes wildlife park, there are 4 females there, but there seems to be now word on any of them being shifted to other zoo's. its all quite complicated really!

They are waiting on the studbook keeper to put forward a female, but am sure when they do chester will be keen to move her asap.

They will probably be wary seeing as he killed Loja! Let's hope a compatible one can be found!!

Niamh was just too young to overcome the infection. Had she been a week or so older she would have stood a chance.

Such a shame to lose a second giraffe after the huge struggle Margaret had to survive and the dedication of the keepers.

Sorry - not worded correct!

...Margaret is still alive!

 Sorry, I know she is - visit her often - I didn't mean to word my comment as if she wasn't!! Just meant it was a shame to lose one after all the effort and determination shown by both Margaret and Keepers which brought a positive outcome.

This is quite a difficult situation, you are right in saying that having fought with/killed a female, the male could do the same with another one. I have not heard of this before with this species. I think Chester may have two options here;

1. Bring in a new(compatable) pair to replace this male.

2. Keep him but when they get a new female, keep him mildly sedated during introductions until he shows he is going to be compatable.

I wouldn't want to just 'try again' with another female- it is too risky..:(

Thanx for the updates, but let us get back on topic!

I would like to know the names and sex of the current giraffes in Chester Zoo (separated by hybrid or pure-bred rothschildi). Any takers that may wrap it up for me?

Incidentally, I would also welcome a copy of the giraffe studbook - if any of you guys have it available -!!!

I think they have 1.1 pure Rothschild's and 0.4 hybrids.

Pure are Thorn and Aofie

hybrids are Fay, Kelly, Margaret and Molly.

It would appear that most of Chester's giraffes - apart from the male and possibly the female from Scotland - are now considered to be hybrids . ISIS currently shows only 1.0 Rothschild's for Chester . The problem was identified from the Belfast herd who have bred very well over the years .

Which UK zoos are now considered to have pure Rothschild's ?

Thanx for that. But can you also give us ages, dates of birth and parentage ... (I know it is very little to ask, is it not? :D)????

Margaret is a pure Rothschild, the first to be born at Chester, to Faye and Thorn. The second giraffe Niamh who sadly died was the 2nd pure Rothschild born to Thorn and Kelly so all 3 adults must be purebreds.

The attached links to archived Chester Zoo news articles gives more info, hope this helps.

Colchester Zoo also has a pure Rothschild male - Century who is about 2.5 years old.
