Species Questions for Spec Zoos

This will be an addition to various spec zoo help threads. This will be for questions regarding the specific species, not the roster or design questions. Some things might include population/presence in a region (for zoos), sustainability, in-situ and ex-situ questions, feasibility, etc.

I'll start with this. In AZA zoos (in the US), are the following 4 animals sustainable long-term? Are there any challenges they have in captivity?;
  • Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus
  • Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris
  • Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta
  • Hamadryas Baboon Papio hamadryas

Excluding avocets, all of these species are well represented in US facilities. Avocets, while not as widespread, are still held at a few places.

Additionally, none of these species really face any visible challenges in captivity, at least nothing so out of the ordinary that would discourage a zoo from keeping them.

What about these species:
  • Namaqua Dove Oena capensis
  • Rosy-faced Lovebird Agapornis roseicollis
  • Sociable Weaver Philetairus socius
  • Southern Red Bishop Euplectes orix
  • Speckled Mousebird Colius striatus
  • Spotted Thick-Knee Burhinus capensis
  • White-headed Buffalo-Weaver Dinemellia dinemelli
  • White-throated Bee-Eater Merops albicollis
  • Bat-eared Fox Otocyon megalotis
  • Cape Porcupine Hystrix africaeaustralis
  • Southern Lion Panthera leo melanochaita
  • Common Warthog Phacochoerus africanus
  • Meerkat Suricata suricatta
  • Damara Molerat Fukomys damarensis
  • Giant African Bullfrog Pyxicephalus adspersus
  • Cape Flightless Dung Beetle Circellium bacchus
  • Black Mamba Dendroaspis polylepis
  • Aardvark Orycteropus afer
  • Southern Lesser Galago Galago moholi
  • Spotted Hyena Crocuta crocuta
  • Common Eland Tragelaphus oryx
  • Gemsbok Oryx gazella
  • Karoo Springbok Antidorcas marsupialis marsupialis

Challenges mean breeding issues, easily stressed, etc.

Does anyone know if Masked Bobwhite Quails (Colinus virginianus ridgwayi) and Elegant Quails are available for Europe (I mean kept in private holdings)?
And which other Arborophila that aren't currently held in European zoos could be available for Europe?
