Perth Zoo Perth Zoo - General Discussion and Speculation

i remember those zoo simulated photos , always would ask my parents for one but don't think i ever ended up getting one done.

Auckland Zoo had a similar set up when my eldest son was a toddler. All visitors coming into the zoo were photographed and you had the option to buy the photo as you left. When I heard the price, that answered the question. My son’s mother had already taken several photos of me and him throughout the day, so I didn’t see the point in paying for one with a fake background. I’m not sure when Perth phased their’s out, but Auckland’s was gone by my next visit. :p

That’s certainly an option.

Hamilton Zoo have five tigers (one of which is Sali, born April 2008 at Perth Zoo). Sali and the male Scout (the mate of Sali’s daughter Kirana) dislike each other and to reduce stress on both animals (especially the elderly female), screens have been placed in between the two exhibits; and between the upper dens and main exhibit. Though they’re aware of the presence of each other, they can no longer see each other and in that sense, it’s been effective.

Perth could surely implement something similar for Jaya re. hyenas if required.
Anyone one else keen to create a separate thread for a Jaya's family tree because there is so much to cover and I've always thought of doing it. I know that out of Jaya's litter Satri passed away at a very young age, Melati was moved to London and bred with Jae Jae and her litters are now spread somewhere across england but I couldn't seem to track them all down, She was then mauled to death by another tiger (Asim) when they were first introduced.... Sali (not apart of his litter but still his sister) as mentioned by Zoofan was moved to NZ (Zoofan would know more) but she was originally at dreamworld as she was rejected by setia and then she was moved to aukland zoo, then bred and gave birth too Kirana and Kembali-

Adelaide Zoo is home to five Sumatran Tigers, Delilah and Kembali, and their three stripy cubs!

Kembali was born at Hamilton Zoo in New Zealand on 16 November, 2014 and has called Adelaide Zoo home since mid-2018.

Their 3 stripey cubs are some of the last remaining reminance of Setia/Hari's bloodline.

Yes, Sali mothered both Kembali and Kirana, both of which recently produced litters of their own;

Kembali's cubs:

1.0 Ketambe (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah
0.1 Marni (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah
0.1 Susu (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah

Kirana's cubs:

0.1 Mayang (03/01/2024) Scout x Kirana
0.1 Andalas (03/01/2024) Scout x Kirana

Ketambe will be exported to the USA soon.

I'll post a Perth history in a bit just to have to look over my records.

perth zoo it was just an extra thing you could do , looking at the old maps i have saved it seems it was there till 2017ish before the building was made into a place they displayed photos and a couple years ago was changed again into a coffee shop

That’s correct. Two Perth tigers have been exported to Europe:

1.0 Tenang (2000) Calang x Malu
0.1 Melati (2008) Hari x Setia

Both have numerous descendants across European zoos.

Hari (sire of Setia’s two litters) was born at London Zoo in 1997, so it was fitting Melati was sent there to breed. Her cubs were the first born at London Zoo since Hari.

Their 3 stripey cubs are some of the last remaining reminance of Setia/Hari's bloodline.
Perth Zoo Sumatran Tiger History:

1.0 Calang (1990) arrived in 1992 from Melbourne. He was born there to founders (Frank and Poetry). His twin sister (Seletan) would be the breeding female at Taronga for many years.

He was joined in 1999 by 0.1 Malu from Wellington who was born to Jambi (offspring of Taronga founders, Nico and Meta) and then Cantik (a founder imported from the Netherlands). Malu had two brothers and three sisters although only one of her sisters (Molek) also bred, none of her cubs have subsequently bred.

Malu and Calang welcomed their first litter in 2000; 1.0 Berani, 1.0 Tenang and 0.1 Setia. Berani was sent to Canberra. He never bred and passed there in 2014. Tenang was sent to the UK where he sired two litters in 2006 and 2009. One of his daughters (Kirana) notably bred at Chester Zoo. He passed in 2015.

Calang died at Perth in 2006 and Malu was sent to the Mogo Zoo in 2003. She produced another litter there (1.0 Juma, 1.0 Ranu and 0.1 Singha). All three are now deceased and never bred due to being inbred.

Setia was initially paired with 1.0 Dumai (2003) from Germany. They never bred and so she was re-paired in 2008 with 1.0 Hari (1997) from the UK.

Hari and Setia had two litters;

The first litter was born in April of 2008 consisting of four cubs. Three passed after birth and the remaining female (Sali) was sent to Dreamworld to be peer raised. She was later sent to NZ (Hamilton specifically) where she's since produced a son and daughter (Kembali and Kirana).

In September of the same year, Setia produced her second litter. This time it was three cubs; 1.0 Jaya, 1.0 Sakti and 0.1 Melati. Sakti passed away in 2009 and Melati was sent to London in 2012.

Melati produced five cubs at London with her first mate before tragically being killed during introductions to her second in 2019.

Hari passed (although not sure exactly when). Setia subsequently passed in 2016, followed by Dumai in 2020 leaving 1.0 Jaya as Perth's only Sumatran Tiger.

Just a couple of additional notes:
She produced another litter there (1.0 Juma, 1.0 Ranu and 0.1 Singha). All three are now deceased and never bred due to being inbred.

Juma and Ranu actually both bred (with Kaitlyn) - Juma sired two cubs (both of which have since bred); and Ranu sired four cubs. Juma and Ranu’s descendants are as follows:

1.0 Scout (08/02/2016) Juma x Kaitlyn
0.1 Mayang (03/01/2024) Scout x Kirana
0.1 Andalas (03/01/2024) Scout x Kirana

0.1 Marni (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah
0.1 Susu (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah

Australia Zoo:

1.0 Nelson (03/06/2019) Ranu x Kaitlyn
1.0 Malcolm (18/02/2020) Ranu x Kaitlyn
0.1 Sallie (18/02/2020) Ranu x Kaitlyn

Hari passed (although not sure exactly when). Setia subsequently passed in 2016, followed by Dumai in 2020 leaving 1.0 Jaya as Perth's only Sumatran Tiger.

Hari didn’t pass away at Perth Zoo. He was transferred to Cairns Wildlife Safari in 2008 and sired one surviving generic cub (Pi) in 2010, who went to Dreamworld.

Although Pi is not a purebred Sumatran tiger, he’s the half-brother of Jaya, so will list him and his offspring in case it’s of interest to @Johnpaul21:

Dreamworld:

1.0 Pi (19/07/2010) Hari x Louise
1.0 Javi (26/04/2019) Pi x Adira
1.0 Zakari (26/04/2019) Pi x Adira

Thanks @Zoofan15

That makes sense re. Hari. For some reason I had him being transferred from Cairns, but it would make sense if it was vice versa. Any idea as to why he was transferred out? Perhaps to create space for his cubs I'm assuming, but I'm not sure why Dumai wasn't transferred instead.

I had also forgotten both Juma and Ranu had bred. Their litter was apparently accidental (their parents were cousins) so their move to Australia Zoo was effectively in attempt to remove them from the breeding program. It seems this notion changed later on, with both later breeding.

It also makes the Delilah/Kembali, Scout/Kirana pairings even more intriguing now that we know all four were descended from Malu. Delilah and Scout being her grandchildren and Kembali and Kirana being her great grandchildren. Seems there's a good degree of relatedness in the regional population these days.

Perth was well and truly at capacity with three adult tigers and three cubs in 2008, so Hari was as much redundant to Perth Zoo breeding wise as Dumai. My guess is the latter was retained as he was hand-raised and aside from the staff’s fondness of him, he was an excellent display animal. He was also younger by six years, so there was more confidence in his longevity.

I recall seeing a comment on here from around the time that Mogo Zoo bred their tigers (Lari and Malu) against recommendation (rather than it being an accidental mating). Either way, Australia Zoo were more than happy to handraise them and the males became the natural choice for breeding at Australia Zoo following the death of Ramalon (with the other male Satu only siring one cub).

I agree the inbreeding has become rampant of late - with Taronga’s last breeding pair being the son and granddaughter respectively of full brothers. I feel there were many wasted opportunities with the abundance of founders in the 2000’s, more of which could have been paired with each other (Binjai having her second litter with Tuan, Oz, Raja or Satu rather than Ramalon for example). Some fresh imports at this point would be hugely advantageous.

Wow thank you guys for all this info :) Just thought I'd clear up the cub in Jaya's litter that died in 2009 was called Satri.

And does anyone know what tiger it was that was involved in the tiger attack last year? Was it technically related to Jaya?

Can anyone see Perth Zoo holding Snow Leopards in the near future in a similar exhibit to Melbourne Zoo? Or temporarily?

I.m.o as much as would be cool for the zoo to have them, if housed properly (which PZ of course would do); think probably not, more likely maybe another species of felid temporarily or long-term (endless amount of praying hands about), think like stated by our friends like Zoofan15 that clouded leopards, Sri Lankan leopards, fishing cats or servals would be most likely new/returning felid species to PZ if any.

But hope am proven completely wrong in stating this, and the zoo did have snow leopards in the future, even temporarily; they would compliment the red pandas considering they are the Asian species which has been the exception to the zoo's tropical (south-east) Asia biome focus exclusively over the last 20+ years with Asian species: since Missy & Barney the Syrian brown bears and the Japanese macaque troop were sent to Cairns (and think Gorge too with the macaques) and Persian leopards Fury, Ishtar & Tiamat were sent to Darwin (and well-before all them the zoo's Himalayan tahr herd were sent away in late '94).

(One example of) a precedent of having snow leopards temporarily at a zoo (not too far away from Perth in a global range 'scheme of things' and a hot climate too, tropical humid 'stickier' right-on-the-equator hot too than compared to Perth’s mostly dry heat, should note to be fair some snow leopards have done ok in warm places but is controversy for most part, when still kept in generally warmer regions of the world now, now depending on opininions like with polar bears, and fair enough for the most part) was Singapore Zoo, who housed Eva 0.1 & Oktai 1.0 the snow leopards for just over a year from 13th July 1993 until 4th August 1994 (loaned from Moscow Zoo). Thanks @snowleopard and @Michel L'HUILLIER for the knowledge about Eva & Oktai having stayed at Singapore Zoo for just over a year.

You’re welcome.

Regarding the Dreamworld tiger attack in 2024, the name of the tiger was never revealed; but was stated to be a five year old male. This means it was either Zakari, Javi or Kahn (with Kahn being of no relation to Jaya).

Jaya’s great uncle Rokan (born 1996 at Wellington Zoo) was involved in an attack on a man in 2003, who climbed the fence into his exhibit at Wellington Zoo. Fortunately staff were able to able to distract him without the tiger or the intruder losing his life.

In 1988, an experienced zookeeper (Victoria Scrivener) lost her after being mauled by Jaya’s great great grandparents (Nico and Meta). She had stoop to take a photo of their newborn cubs (one being Jaya’s great grandfather Jambi) when she was grabbed through the bars by one of the adults. It was a very tragic incident and from what I’ve heard she was a remarkable woman who was dedicated to her career in every way. The zoo director reportedly offered to euthanise the tiger who attacked her; but her parents refused, saying their daughter would have been appalled by the idea.

I agree with both of you. There’s no possibility Perth would even consider Snow leopards. They’re completely unsuitable for the Western Australian climate and the exhibit would be nothing less than a money pit, with ongoing investment in climate controlled facilities needed almost year round.

Sri Lankan leopard, Clouded leopard and Fishing cat would all be much better choices. Sri Lankan leopard could rotate with Sumatran tiger in a rotational exhibit concept and would be an obvious replacement for sun bears (the alternative being to allocate the same space to tigers, which would enable breeding).

I’ve spoken previously of Melbourne Zoo being in a position to import a pair of Sumatran tigers from outside the region within the decade; but so too could Perth be if they elect to expand their tiger facilities. It’s clear the regional population would benefit from additional founders and should Perth import a pair, 1-2 breeding recommendations to that pair would be guaranteed; with a strong possibility of a future pairing then being made with one half of that pair to another tiger within the region (or the offspring of the founder pair).

It was interesting that all three brothers (plus their older sister at Adelaide) were all paired up at least once during their life times. Their parents (Shiva and Seletan) weren't the most valuable tigers, but to be fair both were just one of two offspring of founders; with their siblings paired up at Wellington and Perth respectively.

In total, within the current regional population;
Juara had 2.1 surviving cubs at Taronga; and he has 3.3 living descendants.
Ramalon had 5.3 surviving cubs and has 6.5 living descendants.
Lari also had 4.2 surviving cubs at Mogo; he currently has 8.6 living descendants.

So, Shiva and Seletan currently 16.12 descendants within the current population with the population as a whole numbering at 19.23. 28/42 members of the population descended from this first generation pair!

Hi Zoofan thanks again for the info, I am planning to make a family tree :) Where do you get this info from and it's always laid out so nicely and in bold letters? Is it on zoochat archives?

Thanks John :)

Thank you @Johnpaul21, I take great pride in providing accurate and concise records and have created several population threads for the region for species that interest me (Sumatran tigers being one of them).

My main source is the Australasian Sumatran tiger population thread, which I’m the author of (but I know the records of most of the species I follow from memory - at least down to the name/parentage and year of birth):
