Perth Zoo Perth Zoo - General Discussion and Speculation

Hi Zoofan thanks again for the info, I am planning to make a family tree :) Where do you get this info from and it's always laid out so nicely and in bold letters? Is it on zoochat archives?

Thanks John :)
I would direct you to post #168 of mine on this thread - pretty much the entire family tree of Jaya regionally.

I agree with both of you. There’s no possibility Perth would even consider Snow leopards. They’re completely unsuitable for the Western Australian climate and the exhibit would be nothing less than a money pit, with ongoing investment in climate controlled facilities needed almost year round.

Sri Lankan leopard, Clouded leopard and Fishing cat would all be much better choices. Sri Lankan leopard could rotate with Sumatran tiger in a rotational exhibit concept and would be an obvious replacement for sun bears (the alternative being to allocate the same space to tigers, which would enable breeding).

I’ve spoken previously of Melbourne Zoo being in a position to import a pair of Sumatran tigers from outside the region within the decade; but so too could Perth be if they elect to expand their tiger facilities. It’s clear the regional population would benefit from additional founders and should Perth import a pair, 1-2 breeding recommendations to that pair would be guaranteed; with a strong possibility of a future pairing then being made with one half of that pair to another tiger within the region (or the offspring of the founder pair).
It was interesting that all three brothers (plus their older sister at Adelaide) were all paired up at least once during their life times. Their parents (Shiva and Seletan) weren't the most valuable tigers, but to be fair both were just one of two offspring of founders; with their siblings paired up at Wellington and Perth respectively.

In total, within the current regional population;
Juara had 2.1 surviving cubs at Taronga; and he has 3.3 living descendants.
Ramalon had 5.3 surviving cubs and has 6.5 living descendants.
Lari also had 4.2 surviving cubs at Mogo; he currently has 8.6 living descendants.

So, Shiva and Seletan currently 16.12 descendants within the current population with the population as a whole numbering at 19.23. 28/42 members of the population descended from this first generation pair!

I can remember at the end of 2023 I started talking to a docent we started talking about future animals and he said the only one he could tell is that that the Zoo was considering getting Snow Leopards. It would be really good to see Perth bring a breeding pair of Tigers and Perth could be apart of the regional breeding program.

I don’t doubt you as a source, but I’m inclined to believe the docent had the wrong info. Snow leopard make absolutely sense for Perth Zoo, especially when Sri Lankan leopard is readily available as an alternative.

I agree a breeding pair of tigers would be a great fit for Perth, especially if sun bears have been canned.

I also think the Docent was saying the wrong information since of what I have read recently about Perths climate.

Truthfully think Canberra, Launceston, Hobart and Melbourne are probably only cities in Australia that really have climates suited to snow leopards (but not 'knocking' Billabong Zoo, they do a great job looking after them, and so did Taronga and Mogo). Nat' Zoo now heavily focused on Sri Lankan leoapards of course, but they were long term holders of snow leopards prior, and imagine the climate around northern Tasmania is suited for 1.0 Sikari living there at Tasmania Zoo now quite comfortably am sure.

Like we've all said but, plenty of amazing tropical climate felids species alternarives to snow leopards for Perth though like the ones we mentioned (am 'team' clouded leopards or Sri Lankan leopards all the way for PZ personal opinion).

Sri Lankan leopards are thriving with several holders now in the region. Clouded leopard will take a while to get going (with only Hamilton stating an interest), so my vote would be for the more viable leopards.

Perth Zoo Sumatran Tiger History:

1.0 Calang (1990) arrived in 1992 from Melbourne. He was born there to founders (Frank and Poetry). His twin sister (Seletan) would be the breeding female at Taronga for many years.

He was joined in 1999 by 0.1 Malu from Wellington who was born to Jambi (offspring of Taronga founders, Nico and Meta) and then Cantik (a founder imported from the Netherlands). Malu had two brothers and three sisters although only one of her sisters (Molek) also bred, none of her cubs have subsequently bred.

Malu and Calang welcomed their first litter in 2000; 1.0 Berani, 1.0 Tenang and 0.1 Setia. Berani was sent to Canberra. He never bred and passed there in 2014. Tenang was sent to the UK where he sired two litters in 2006 and 2009. One of his daughters (Kirana) notably bred at Chester Zoo. He passed in 2015.

Calang died at Perth in 2006 and Malu was sent to the Mogo Zoo in 2003. She produced another litter there (1.0 Juma, 1.0 Ranu and 0.1 Singha). All three are now deceased and never bred due to being inbred.

Setia was initially paired with 1.0 Dumai (2003) from Germany. They never bred and so she was re-paired in 2008 with 1.0 Hari (1997) from the UK.

Hari and Setia had two litters;

The first litter was born in April of 2008 consisting of four cubs. Three passed after birth and the remaining female (Sali) was sent to Dreamworld to be peer raised. She was later sent to NZ (Hamilton specifically) where she's since produced a son and daughter (Kembali and Kirana).

In September of the same year, Setia produced her second litter. This time it was three cubs; 1.0 Jaya, 1.0 Sakti and 0.1 Melati. Sakti passed away in 2009 and Melati was sent to London in 2012.

Melati produced five cubs at London with her first mate before tragically being killed during introductions to her second in 2019.

Hari passed (although not sure exactly when). Setia subsequently passed in 2016, followed by Dumai in 2020 leaving 1.0 Jaya as Perth's only Sumatran Tiger.

Just a couple of additional notes:

Juma and Ranu actually both bred (with Kaitlyn) - Juma sired two cubs (both of which have since bred); and Ranu sired four cubs. Juma and Ranu’s descendants are as follows:

1.0 Scout (08/02/2016) Juma x Kaitlyn
0.1 Mayang (03/01/2024) Scout x Kirana
0.1 Andalas (03/01/2024) Scout x Kirana

Adelaide Zoo:

0.1 Delilah (08/02/2016) Juma x Kaitlyn
1.0 Ketambe (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah
0.1 Marni (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah
0.1 Susu (21/12/2022) Kembali x Delilah

Australia Zoo:

1.0 Nelson (03/06/2019) Ranu x Kaitlyn
1.0 Malcolm (18/02/2020) Ranu x Kaitlyn
0.1 Sallie (18/02/2020) Ranu x Kaitlyn
0.1 Sage (18/02/2020) Ranu x Kaitlyn

Hari didn’t pass away at Perth Zoo. He was transferred to Cairns Wildlife Safari in 2008 and sired one surviving generic cub (Pi) in 2010, who went to Dreamworld.

Although Pi is not a purebred Sumatran tiger, he’s the half-brother of Jaya, so will list him and his offspring in case it’s of interest to @Johnpaul21:

Dreamworld:

1.0 Pi (19/07/2010) Hari x Louise
1.0 Javi (26/04/2019) Pi x Adira
1.0 Zakari (26/04/2019) Pi x Adira

Thanks for providing this information! My understanding is that Hari was imported to Cairns and sent from Cairns to Perth on a breeding loan. I'm not sure when he was imported from the UK, though, as you're correct that he was born there (at London Zoo, I believe). It was one of the early examples of collaboration between CWSR and the ARAZPA/ZAA zoos.

Hari was born at London Zoo; but was imported from South Lakes Safari. Yes, he initially went to Cairns Wildlife Safari, who then loaned him to Perth (circa 2007), with the first litter born April 2008.

From memory he went to Mogo when Cairns Wildlife Safari closed, but didn’t live for long after the transfer.

Thanks for that. I didn't know about Hari going to Mogo. I gather he was Cairns' last tiger by then?

They also had his mate Louise, who was an elderly female and may have even be deceased by the time of closure. She originally came from Mogo, so presumably there was some strong ties between the zoos.

Edit: The original lion stock was imported from West Midlands Safari Park in the UK whilst Mareeba was still under the ownership of David Gill. Hari arrived in the same shipment. They had a massive pride of about 15 lions (one male and at least a dozen females) when I visited; as well as some smaller prides of bachelor males etc.

Louise was still alive at Cairns as of 2013 - so perhaps she was transferred back to Mogo with Hari?

She had a twin sister, Thelma and the pair were born in 1995. Louise is survived by her trio of cubs who reside at Sydney.

The entry was open
Ok because on my last visit such was about three weeks ago it was shut and 2 weeks before that the exit was shut with some thought of construction going on and to enter and exit there was a behind the senses path.
