Polar bears in Europe

7-year-old polar bear female Nuka moved from Pairi Daiza to Zoo Karlsruhe today. Here, she will form a pair with male Kap. The intention is that they will have offspring together.

Very happy about this move as Zoo Karlsruhe has long tried to rejuvenate its polar bear breeding program. The exhibit is a landmark in the central part of the zoo.

I expect that PD will receive a young female polar bear in due course.

Two polar bears were born at Zoo Karlsruhe today. Female Nuka gave birth in the outdoor enclosure. Normally, a female retreats into a birthing den a few weeks before giving birth. Because Nuka gave birth in the outdoor enclosure and stayed there with her offspring, the young animals' chances of survival are not particularly high.

To spare the small remaining chance, the area around the outdoor enclosure has been blocked off to zoo visitors and the enclosure's windows have been whitewashed as a privacy screen. This should allow Nuka, who lies in a half-cave that is open at the front, to care for the two cubs as quietly as possible.

Ranua zoo is currently renovating its polar bear habitat and the polar bear has now their absolutely huge brown bear enclosure in use.

I wish they'll expand the polar bear enclosure to rival that brown bear area.

They currently have only one polar bear: 19 years old Venus (f). So I don't think they'll try to find a mate for her anymore. (Venus is originally from Rostock and moved to Ranua under age of two).

At Eindhoven Zoo, 16-year-old polar bear male Wilbäl has died. He underwent emergency surgery last weekend due to worsening of an existing umbilical hernia. Although the operation seemed successful, he did not recover as hoped. He showed signs of severe abdominal pain and refused to eat or drink.

The vet and keepers worked for days to help him recover, but unfortunately to no avail. It was then decided to put him to sleep to avoid further suffering.

We can be sure about that because Ouwehands confirmed it to me on Instagram.
I know he is going to CERZA. The thing I am not sure about is whether he is yet to move or has already moved. In some comments they are saying he is going to move to CERZA, while in other comments they are again saying he has already moved.

This should allow Nuka, who lies in a half-cave that is open at the front, to care for the two cubs as quietly as possible.

The surviving cub started leaving the cave in the outdoor enclosure about two weeks ago. As it was still too dangerous in there, mother Nuka and the cub were lured inside. That way, the outdoor enclosure could be cleaned and modified to make it safe for the young polar bear.

The cub also got its first veterinary examination. During this, the gender was also determined: it is a male. It will probably take until March before guests can see the cub in the outdoor enclosure. It is not yet known whether Kap, the cub's father and a genetic important in the EEP, will stay in Karlsruhe.

According to posts in a Facebook group and on a German zoo forum, sponsors/adopters of the polar bears at Zoo Rostock have received an announcement that Kaja and Skadi will be moving. Within 4 to 6 weeks, they will move to Zoo Tallinn.

Skadi and Kaja will move from Zoo Rostock to Tallinn Zoo at the end of March. There they will live in Friida's current enclosure. Friida will soon move to Skandinavisk Dyrepark in Denmark.

For the first time ever, polar bears have been born at Sóstó Zoo. Mother Sneschana gave birth to two cubs on November 27th. Father of the cubs is Lloyd.

The cubs are both males.
