Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2025

Lovely news just not quite sure it's good news

Aysa and her war traumatised first set of cubs, Emi, Santa and Teddi now 2, arrived at the park last March after a 2000-mile road trip from a holding facility in Poland.

They had spent nine months separated from each other and without seeing any sunlight or having the stimulation of the outside world.

But almost a year after the lions were reunited in Lion Country, mum Aysa unexpectedly gave birth to three more cubs despite being on contraception.

Her adorable new cubs were born late on Monday and are under 4 year-old Aysa’s careful protection.

Although this was an unplanned pregnancy, we must welcome the little ones. Aysa deserves to be a normal mother without the traumas she had before. I’m sure YWP will do their best to integrate the cubs when they are old enough. Let’s hope Teddi will be OK living peacefully with his sisters and daughters/sons. He is fully vasectomised now.

I can't see any reason why they wouldn't form a single pride/group in the future.

Unintended but hopefully the cubs will do well and if it comes to it YWP are at least well suited to hold a number of lions separately.

I’d hope they would all be able to live as a pride together though and I’d expect the zoo will work on that being the approach to take.

If a male lion is vasectomised does the testosterone drop and he loses his mane? Or is that only when a male is castrated? (Sorry for a stupid question)

Someone will correct me as just going off the BBC animal wise, but this article about a Dutch zoo mentions that vasectomy allows the lion to keep the mane (and retain his pride status).

Thor the lion has a vasectomy in Dutch zoo

Surgery on 11-year-old Thor was a success, with a vasectomy chosen over castration to protect his mane from falling out

which makes sense as a Vasectomy shouldn't impact testosterone levels as the testicles are not removed, vs castration where they are.

It's a lovely tribute to them and YWP gave them an amazing home just sadly the social media team got one of the picture wrong

YWP have just annouced the passing of the last 2 of the Romanian resue lions they brought over 15 years ago.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park

That's sad news and even with new lions to care for it must be a really sad moment for the keepers after such a long time caring for them. The lions did have an excellent life for more than 15 years and reached a really good age. I was interested to see a maned female in a captive setting (though they were fun to watch without that, as lions are) so will particularly remember that.
