Tropiquaria Tropiquaria News

Visited again a couple weeks ago but couldn’t help but feel very sad for the place. I know the cost of everything and upkeep is expensive and they’ve obviously put their entrance prices up because of it but compared to other zoos in the south west, Tropiquaria overall feels very run down and lacking something. I know the building is listed and not much you can do about that and all of the indoor stuff looks really impressive (Tropical Hall, Aquarium & Nocturnal House). However, i feel the outside parts are the opposite in my opinion. Not really much to see and i feel like there’s so much room to do more with the space. I just feel like compared to other small zoos similar sizes like Axe Valley and Shaldon, Tropiquaria doesn’t have much at all.

Axe Valley and Shaldon, both of which I love, don’t have any fish. Tropiquaria has internationally important stocks of several Endangered or even Extinct in the Wild species

I think the work they do in the aquarium and how they have done it up down there in recent years has been a massive improvement. The conservation efforts they are involved in is really impressive aswell. It’s just more the outside sections like i mentioned before. I just think compared to the other small zoos around, they’re really lacking. Not just with the amount of animals but also just the general state of some parts. Some enclosures are clearly quite old and i remember them being there since i was a kid visiting. I just think like they have done indoors updating a lot of enclosures, they need to outside. Don’t get me wrong, i love Tropiquaria and visiting but just recently looks a lot worse and empty.

A couple days back, Tropiquaria acquired "Bode", a Male Bobcat. It was only meant to be temporary, but after a massive amount of support, they've got the ball rolling on a forever home for Bode at Tropiquaria!

Visiting on Thursday after a few years, any species other than the flying squirrels I should look out for?

Bode the Bobcat (rescued from Cat Survival Trust in January) is now on display.

His new enclosure has been converted from what used to be a Racoon Dog enclosure (the previous occupants have moved in with the other RD's onsite).

With limited financial resources (+donations and goodwill from some landscaping companies, who built the water feature for free) they have done this in just three months. A remarkable achievement

Difficult to judge from the photos, but it looks very pristine and natural. I am reminded of the new Pallas' Cat enclosures at Prague, which considering the gulf in financial status of the two is quite something to be compared to. Indeed very impressive given the timespan and will add a lot of new life to the outdoor portion of the zoo which can appear a tad run down at times. May be worth a revisit, as I haven't actually seen Bobcats before.
