I guess the best person to ask is @baboon as he has been involved in the South China tiger ex situ conservation program in the past. Further, I have to point out that as our stemeed Chinese friend and Zoochat poster had informed us before on this thread there has been a degree of admixture in the past between China and Indochinese tigers.... here. But ultimately, the genetics of the South China tiger remain in captivity in CAZG zoos in the P.R. of China.

@baboon is I believe in a far better position to judge their merits and the current state of affairs with the South China tiger ex situ program and for all intense purposes whereas from a genetic and life history PoV the original studbook analysis certainly makes for an interesting read ... it has ceased to have much relevance to the current program as I believe their numbers have now well gone far above 200 individuals in 14+ zoos (probably more now ...) and mind you these figures pertain to 2021 and we are 4+ years down the line now.

I really do hope we can see a never studbook or even the current breeding lines in the 14 source zoos in P.R. of China and have a look into .... Sure, I do hope @baboon can shed more light on this soon.

Currently, South China tigers are one of the animals subject to the highest level of conservation measures in Chinese zoos. All South China tigers must undergo genetic testing before breeding to ensure that higher genetic diversity can be sustained. As of October 2024, there are a total of 247 South China tigers kept in zoos in China, including 117 males, 129 females, and one of unknown gender.

Hey with genetic diversity from a founder base of 6 (2.4) founders/apical ancestors I wonder how much genetic diversity can be gained multiple generations later.
Steve, it is about same like with Amur leopard and breeding out the Himalayan/Tibetan leopard blood from the pure-bred Amur leopard grouping. Only careful genetic planning of all pairings can make the most effective use of founder representation and ensuring that Amur leopard are 90-95% confidence limit pure-bred. Small population biology and species management...

@cooper_yang@7, Do you have a copy of some studbook with all the individuals listed in it or digitally available as a printout (ZIMS-SPARKS data set like)?

Dont know anything about Himalayan/Tibetan leopard blood with Amur leopards, first time have heard about.
The Frankfurt breeding pair was a pure-bred Amur leopard crossed with a Chinese leopard. Whereas its contribution was significant in terms of percentage, the fact that a good number of other Amur leopard were bred from at the outset the genetic management has been made a little easier ..., but still it requires attention to weed out the non Amur genes from the ex situ conservation breeding population.

At present, I do not have exact data. There are two papers that describe the genetic diversity of South China tigers differently:
1. The Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens commenced a coordinated South China tiger captive breeding and management program in 1994. From 1995, the South China Tiger Committee (renamed as Tiger Taxonomy Advisory Group, the Tiger TAG, in 2015) has been organizing an annual review of the captive population and breeding designing and exchange plans [12]. The Tiger TAG set a goal to maintain 90% of the genetic variations present in the captive population in 1995 and targeted to sustain 70% of the variations over the next 100 years. Since then, the breeding tigers began to be exchanged between the zoos based on their pedigree records and the number of the South China tigers increased rapidly. There were 205 South China tigers managed in captivity by 16 Chinese zoos and 18 individuals in the Laohu Valley Reserve in South Africa by 2020. (Population genomic analysis provides evidence of the past success and future potential of South China tiger captive conservation | BMC Biology | Full Text)
2. This resulted in inbreeding depression that progressively degraded the reproductive capacity of adults and the survival of juveniles despite substantial improvements in captive rearing technology and expertise (Xu et al., 2007; Yuan et al., 2021). In addition, pedigree-based estimation showed that the present population represents 65.23% of the six ancestors' genetic diversity (Yuan et al., 2020), meaning 34.77% has been lost.(https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/1755-0998.13669)

I'm very sorry, I don't have a detailed pedigree book, the information I have is collected by enthusiasts using the Internet. If one day I am lucky enough to become a member of the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens, I will publish it with the permission of the pedigree manager.

Thanks anyway @cooper_yang@7, I appreciate what You are contributing to the Zoochat forum here and a lot about the South China tiger breeding program in PR of China is not well known and unjustly so not common knowledge.

I appreciate that You and other Chinese Zoochat members adding your perspectives on developments with CAZG and all the many zoos around P.R. of China. So, Hey .... Just, please, please, please keep all observations, new animals or exhibits in zoos You and your friends and fellow Chinese Zoochat forumsters coming.

We do get some about Xining Zoo and the Northern Forest Zoo and a bit about Shanghai and sometimes Beijing Zoos. More is better yet!!!!

I personally would love to hear more about Beijing Wild Animal Park, Shanghai Wild Animal Park, the Nanning and Nanjing Zoos, Suzhou Zoo, Xi'an, Chengdu, Kunming, Guangzhou Zoo and the Guangzhou Chimelong Parks .... Sure I am still forgetting loads that are equally worthy. Hope You and other Chinese Zoochat forumsters take up the challenge bc there is a whole zoo world out in PR of China.

No problem, I will continue to share some of the information I know. I traveled to Guangdong Province in January and visited 5 zoos + 1 amphibian and reptile shop. When I have more free time, I will post my travel notes here. In addition, thank you for your attention to Chinese zoos and related fields. In today's international situation, it is precious to communicate based on common interests and hobbies without being affected by other factors. (PS: Just like the debates about giant pandas and Golden Snub-nosed monkeys in this community, some opinions are very boring to me personally)

Unfortunately, due to language limitations, Chinese zoo enthusiasts are not very interested in expressing their views on Chinese zoos on this platform.

I am aware of the language limitations ... even though there are quite good language transliteration services or DuoLinggo like.

I am not specficially asking for views ..., rather discourse about developments, new exhibits and new animals and or births and stuff....

I understand what you mean. What I mean is that Chinese zoo lovers are not very interested in sharing information about Chinese zoos in English on this platform. We prefer to share and discuss on our own social software.

What if we asked questions and translated from English to standardised Chinese character writing and posted the questions and discussions like that.
