Global Captive Orca Population

Loro Parque has released a (new) poll for naming Morgans calf, this time it has not been deleted and it is the final results.

Loro Parque also posted the meaning of the names with the poll.

Odin: Name of the supreme God in Norse mythology, associated with Wisdom, power and protection.

Teno: Iconic place in Tenerife, surrounded by nature and cliffs. It reflects the calf's Canarian roots and special connection to its birthplace.

Thor: Name of the Norse god of thunder, symbol of strength, protection, and bravery.

Drago: Refers to the ancient Drago tree, a symbol of the Canary Islands. It stands for life, resilience, and the magic of the islands, while celebrating the orca calf's Canarian origin.
Not the best options however I do like the fact that Loro Parque selected a few names that reflect the calves Canarian origin and pay tribute to the Canary Islands as a whole, which is something new and unique when it comes to naming animals.

I also do appreciate Loro Parque's attempt towards finding names also of Norse origin, reflecting where Morgan was initially found (in Norway).

I do like the name Teno the most too.

Current results are:

Teno: 38%
Drago: 34%
Odin: 17%
Thor: 11%

Though things could change, it looks like it’ll be close between Teno and Drago. The other two have presumably lost favour due to their stronger connotations with Norse mythology, which people also associate with pop culture - though I would have otherwise guessed that would go in their favour. Any naming competition for animals usually brings in suggestions of Disney, Pixar names etc.

I like the meanings of Teno and Drago, but the latter is too similar to Draco and there’s more suitable mutual references to the Canary Island and an Orca than a tree.

Teno won, and Loro Parque officially announced the calf as Teno.

Loro Parque appealed to take the 14 cetaceans (12 bottlenose dolphins and Wikie and Keijo) but the appeal failed. They will stay at Marineland Antibes until they die, officially now.

Adding to this, apparently even if SeaWorld or Japan tried to step up it would be denied, because the French Minister said the animals can only stay under European legislation.
Good news to hear the name Teno won - it was my vote, and was easily the best of all the options.

However very disappointing to see the pair at Antibes still being left without a solution. Loro Parque can't do much as it's the Spanish Government who've refused to allow them to acquire the animals on the basis of them not having the 'space'.

It also makes little sense as to why the animals can only stay under European legislation - hopefully that can be overturned under special circumstances.

Although the French Government seems committed to taking care of the cetaceans in the meantime, there's no way this a viable long term solution with the need for entire renovations to the whole orca complex.

The dolphins specifically were also supposed to go the Madrid Aquarium - it was only Wikie and Keijo who were going to Loro Parque.

I really have no words for this... So now what? Government will pay to repair the entire infrastructure so that they can keep living in Marineland? Because otherwise they don't have long future there...

Further Update on the Antibes orcas:

The application to move them to Loro Parque was described as a temporary measure by Pannier-Runacher that would bridge the gap until a sanctuary in Europe had been found and built.

But activists feared the transfer would end up being permanent. The decision by a Spanish scientific panel to block it came as a pleasant surprise to many of them.

The scientific panel's approval was needed to complete the transfer but they concluded Loro Parque's facilities did "not meet the minimum requirements in terms of surface area, volume and depth necessary to house the specimens in optimal conditions".

The WSP has identified a site in Port Hilford Bay, Nova Scotia that they plan to cordon off using 1,600m of nets.

Lori and the WSP team contacted the ministry after learning the transfer to Loro Parque had been blocked. At time of writing, they had not received a response.

BBC News also contacted the ministry for comment. Pannier-Runacher had not made any new announcements about what will happen to the orcas.

Time to introduce new pathogens and interrupt an already troubled ocean, surely never can go wrong! Not like that money can go to actually helping wild orcas struggling in their environment or help send already specimens used to human care to an adequate facility (despite myths do meet the requirements) without damaging natural resources/environment and the whales themselves. Why must they be so selfish and stubborn.

I apologize everyone for my constant sh*tying on animal rights orgs. (complain all I want it’s going nowhere), it sucks that there is such a small minority of experts who understand the significance of cetacean captivity and there hasn’t been anyone of them speaking out against this decision. It’s sad and challenging for Loro Parque and SeaWorld to step in because general public think they are lying or bias or even actual experts.

At this point Wikie and Keijo need to move anywhere. It’s ironic that activists would rather have them euthanized when they complained going to Japan would be death -

It's becoming about a 50/50 chance nowadays that "animal welfare" situations end up having absolute zip done in regards to doing what's best for the animal, and merely turn into a politically oriented argument about ideologies that drags on while animals suffer unnecessarily. It is massively hypocritical to be crying about animal welfare when the results are that you stranded intelligent animals in rapidly degrading pools in a closed park because of your ideas on the subject. Doing what's best for the animals would have been allowing them to Loro Parque or even Japan at this point, not running in circles spouting off rubbish ideas.

Yeah. Such a shame -

kiska and Lolita all suffered from antis - and they don’t even campaign them anymore or speak on it now that they’re dead. They just want to make sure their organization is aligned but still block the transfers to a better facility for. A hypothetical sanctuary that they have yet to build with the millions in donations they have. It’s a def business for them ironically

This is so sad, I never thought Kamea would be the first to go of the San Antonio pod. I’m so sorry to everyone who loved her

I heard she was in the med pool a little while back but the news is truly shocking. Gone way too soon my heart goes out to her care team and the San Antonio pod. Hopefully the official cause of death is posted soon besides it being just an "illness" that took her.

Wow, that is absolutely tragic news and very unexpected. I saw a video of her not too long ago with her mum and sister, and she seemed to be doing well.

She was only eleven years old, and indeed only leaves San Antonio with four orcas now. My thoughts are with the entire Seaworld team, including everyone who knew her, she was truly a wonderful whale.
