The zoo has not started construction on the islands they just blocked off the areas from visitors.

The current Komodo Dragon is too small for the outdoor habitat currently but when the zoo had Hugo there was by no means a 90 degree rule and rather many factors came into play on if he would be outside or not.

The zoo is one of if not the most sustainable zoo in the nation and almost all the water it uses it collected rain water not from the city so there is no issue there. The water that is currently in swan lake is by no means just mosquito breeding ground.
 
I am at the zoo this morning and one of the keepers in Elephant trek just announced that the female Asian small clawed otter, Munti is pregnant. She said they are not sure how many exactly she will be having but they can have up to 7 babies. Expected in mid to late June. How exciting! Also, i would HIGHLY recommend checking out Elephant Trek this summer! Every aspect of this entire new area is phenomenal!

Be good if they would be announcing their plans post transfer of the black rhinos to other facilities within AZA. I am sure they will find good homes for them where they can actually rebreed!

As for the current state of affairs...., mmmm .... I really am very ambivalent where pachyderms and specifically rhinos is concerned at Cincinnati Zoo ... after years of involvement in 3 ..., yes 3 rhino species before, no rhinos at all. Yet it is not even quite clear when and if the black rhinos will return at a later date ... and most particularly then where ...????

BTW: What is their idea on the Grevy zebra's.....taking them off-exhibit?!!! Are they staying or not and again where would they put them up (certainly, I hope not with gazelles and giraffes ...., which do not work that well in enclosed spaces)?

As for the matter of where, the latest released plan, though not as public as the one we're so used to seeing in the past, essentially reveals Rhino Reserve is being picked up and dropped where the giraffes currently are - including the administrative buildings.

So the black rhinos will be moving into the old giraffe enclosure?

And keep up the wonderful Zoo Tours videos btw Moebelle, they make up for me not being able to travel out of State due to time nad money.
 
Can we expect bear ridge and rhino reserve to essentially become a “Pacific Northwest” section? It seems that practically the entirety of rhino reserve will move to Africa and possibly polar bears will take up that space. This means the visayan warty pigs will be phased out as previously thought too. I expect the new Africa section sooner than we think, I could see Cincinnati becoming a 10 ten zoo in the US with all of this new areas and their future.

Is there possibly more room in the Elephant Trek for the Visiyan Warty Pigs or even in Jungle Trails? I just feel like they are to much of a rarity to lose that easily.

The zoo only has two elderly males and is phasing out the species so sadly we will not see them appear again. Wish they would have put them in elephant trek instead of babirusa but oh well guess we have to listen to all AZA phase outs by heart now.
 
Also the indoor pallas cat exhibit in night hunters as been closed since I think December now I know that they will be breeding the female that's there but there has been no updates from the zoo social media I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this and I know this stuff takes time but still

Hope cheetah is ok. Why not use that space for wild dog and allow the hippos to meander

Too many people consistently suggest the wild dog/hippo combo as if the behind the scenes are connected without so much of a glance at the map... AND... think the wild dog habitat is already built and ready to go for hippos. The keeper access to Africa's BTS is in between them.

That would not be possible without completely renovating the hippo exhibit. An expansion to Hippo Cove is impossible unless the zoo demolishes the painted dog habitat as behind is where the only access point to the facility. The rest of the side where a crossing could be made is all water and so not possible. I know there are many who would like to see a larger hippo habitat but it is just not logistically possible or something the zoo would find worth doing with the current bloat all doing fine in the current exhibit space.

There's a reason the zoo has two (three if you count there offsite center) areas dedicated to cheetahs. They have an excess amount, I don't know the exact number, but enough to have multiple areas dedicated to cheetahs. Putting them all in one space by Treetops would mean rotating a bunch of big cats in one exhibit vs. rotating several in two spaces.
