I'm working a late shift tonight, so I went birding before I have to go in. I wasn't able to do the loop I was planning, but I still had a huge list with two lifers. Headed into the forest, I had three Blue-headed Vireos flying around and singing. On my way out, I had a male Black-throated Blue Warbler on the same path. The Black-throated Blue Warbler is one of my favorite warblers, so I was pumped to finally see one.

Today turned out much better than I expected. It rained almost the entire morning, so I wasn't expecting to get any new birds for the day. Instead, I got four new birds (which weirdly seems like a trend based on my last few outings) and my highest warbler count for a single day. I ended with 9 species and tried to get to 10, but it was a little too late for anything new to show.

Catching up with nerdmin - the below are mainly from a long weekend in Cumbria last weekend - including the RSPB reserves at Leighton Moss, Hodbarrow, and St Bees Head. The latter two were new to me - a lagoon with tern colony at Hodbarrow (four species present - the below plus Sandwich - including one nice perched-up Arctic) and seabird cliffs at the latter (including spotting England's only known breeding Black Guillemots).

The only exception is the Common Swift, which have returned to the skies of Chesterfield this week. UK-only bird total also claws one back on the main list with the arrival of house martins as well.

Birds:
147. Red Knot - Calidris canutus
148. Willow Warbler - Phylloscopus trochilus
149. Eurasian Rock Pipit - Anthus petrosus
150. Common Tern - Sterna hirundo
151. Little Tern - Sternula albifrons
152. Arctic Tern - Sterna paradisaea
153. Common Whitethroat - Curruca communis
154. Black-legged Kittiwake - Rissa tridactyla
155. Northern Fulmar - Fulmarus glacialis
156. European Pied Flycatcher - Ficedula hypoleuca
157. Common Swift - Apus apus

(UK: 153)

Amphibians:
4. Common Frog - Rana temporaria

Invertebrates:
13. Common Carder Bee - Bombus pascuorum
14. Orange-tip - Anthocharis cardimines
15. Large White - Pieris brassicae

Just after returning from Germany, I went on a Big Day with a couple of friends. It was a day full of highs and lows, as one might expect, and in the end we managed 117 bird species within our own region - not counting the three established exotics we saw (pheasant, Egyptian goose and Canada goose). As one might expect, it also produced a good list of year species. Among the highlights are the vanishingly rare turtle dove, my first willow tit in over a year, and an excellent osprey sighting. Besides the birds I saw my first maps (as in, the butterfly) of the year, and the day ended with a beaver sighting.
