I was considering going north from Tokyo on my trip to Japan next year, but this encourages me to go south insteadAn Amami rabbit will be on display at the Nocturnal house from September 14th.
@Toki
Thanks for your reply, I will have to visit both institutions in one day because of my itinerary hope I will make it. And yes, I will be going from Kagoshima station. Anyway thank you for your suggestion.

I'm so glad to hear that you successfully managed to photograph the Amami rabbit in good lighting!Hi,
I had a nice but a bit rainy day today in Hirakawa Zoo. My first steps went to the Nocturnal House and I managed to find the lights on so was able to take a photo of Amami rabit before the lights turned off in 9.20 a.m.![]()
Here’s the official announcement from the zoo.male koala Shishio is planned to be sent to Hirakawa Zoo in March 17.
This news is a bit cryptic and in actuality You have to write to the Phnom Penh Post to even read the darn feature article!!!!
Is male Shishio from Higashiyama Zoo the only koala at Hirakawa Zoo (or do they already have koalas at the zoo?)?Here’s the official announcement from the zoo.

Is it correct that the koalas' in Japan are by definition mostly the Nordic subspecies (
Phascolarctos cinereus cinereus)?
Hirakawa Zoo will no longer keep white rhinos. The state of white rhino breeding in Japan is not great by a long shot. Current animal management is having a hard time keeping a population in Japanese zoos. Pair wise exhibition of white rhino is not exactly hyper productive.0.1 Souther white rhinoceros Shino died on March 18th of this year. Shino was 46 years old.
The blog post announcing her death does come with some interesting information about Shino’s birth place, Miyazaki Safari Park. The park was Japan’s first safari park, opened on 1975. Shino was born in 1978, a successful year in rhinoceros breeding since the Safari park bred five calves including Shino that year. Unfortunately the Safari park was closed in 1986. The site of the Safari park was turned into a golf course.

According to the zoo’s website (which says currently not in captivity in the rhinoceros’s page) and Chlidonias’s visit report, the zoo currently does not keep this species.NOTA BENE: Hirakawa Zoo does have also black rhino on the collection.
Sorry, case of mistaken identity.According to the zoo’s website (which says currently not in captivity in the rhinoceros’s page) and Chlidonias’s visit report, the zoo currently does not keep this species.
Yeah, I had the zoo down for Sunny.Hirakawa Zoo returned the Black Rhinoceros "Sunny" to Kamine Zoo in 2022.
