Taronga Zoo Recent history of Taronga and developments etc

Thanks man. Maybe Quintus (the last)? Wondering if the baby orangutan is in the footage is Jason? Given as you worked out and thanks again for, the commerical probably filmed and aired c1981 or '82.

I’d guess this was filmed late 1981 as Shiba looks to be only a few months old (not a year old). That would also tie in with the ad screening for the school holidays (December 1981 to January 1982).

With that in mind, my guess is the orangutan was Anne (first guess) or Wanita (second guess) as it looks to be around 3-4 years of age:

0.1 Anne (Hybrid)
Born at Taronga Zoo 23/08/1977
Died at Taronga Zoo 07/04/1985
Sire: Roy; Dam: Judy II

0.1 Wanita (Hybrid)
Born at Taronga Zoo 23/03/1979
Sent to Auckland Zoo 06/03/2001
Sire: Roy; Dam: Wendy

Oh cool right yeah that makes sense. Your deduction skills are cosmically excellent man.

Certainly looks like Anne. Wanita had quite a distinctive look.

This photo (which I believe was taken in the mid 80's) seems to show a young Wanita and presumably Jason:

Play School's Elaine Hudson, Don Spencer & Jan Kingsbury at Taronga Zoo early 1981 or could of been filmed in 1980 possibly (aired May '81). Initially thought was 1983 but wasnt when posted snippets of in 1983. Thanks again Zoofan' and Jambo for your insight at the time if you don't mind when you get a chance could you post again your info on at the time. Given was filmed 2 years earlier than had thought when posted snippets in Oct 2023, think the baby hippo must be the calf before Louise was born.

Trimmed down the episode so its just the animal footage with very little music and talking. First 7.5 minutes are the parts might be interested in watching: the giraffes; the chimp troop (interestingly cant tell if they had the exhibit to themselves or were still sharing with the jackals at the time, the latter certainly dont appear in the footage); a female hippopotamus and her baby; lovely Ranee the elephant; the family of spider monkeys; Don with keeper Gary/Garry feeding the lion trio (1.2) in the old pit exhibit & 1.0 Quintus the tiger in neighbouring old pit exhibit; followed by Elaine throwing fish with the pinniped keepers to the sea lions in one of old pinniped pools during feeding time. After that its Jan on a lawn with keeper Debbie, meeting a ringtail possum named Jack, a baby bluetongue lizard & a long-neck turtle in one of the interaction programs they ran for the kids back then; then with keeper Marion in the wildlife nursery with rescued orphaned male wallaroo joey named Sky and orphaned 10-11 month old baby bare-nosed wombat, and a rescued female (think eastern grey) kangaroo joey who gets a checkup by zoo vet Gary Redcliffe (the three of them are so cute); then the old farmyard area of the zoo (pony named Turpin, donkeys, red kangaroos, goats, cows, ducks and turkey).

It's a sweet video though and posted the link for the full episode on the youtube page if anyone wants to show their kids as like classic Play School its still good watching for youngsters, even episodes from nearly 45 years ago.

At about 4:59 - 5:22 into the video can see Ali the jaguar walk past in his old exhibit in the background.

Great spotting! Ali the Jaguar would have been an adolescent, so likely kept separated from the mature female Wendy. Their first litter was conceived early 1984.

Sent to Melbourne Zoo 01/03/1989 (died 2008)

Thanks for sharing.

The chimpanzee at 0.03 is Lulu’s son Lewis (1985). It’s interesting to note the dark pigmentation on his face as he’s the maternal uncle of Lemba (2023), who has similar dark pigmentation. It’s suggests a strong Western heritage versus the lighter faces we associate with Shiba’s line (who have Central heritage).

Pygmy Hippopotamus Birth (1985)

Article:

This three-week-old pygmy hippopotamus, called Ady, stole the limelight at Taronga Zoo yesterday when she made her public debut.

Ady, the first pygmy hippopotamus to be born at Taronga Zoo in seven years, weighed only five kilograms at birth, but is expected to blossom to about 270 kilograms when fully grown - still only one-tenth the size of a common hippo.

Ady's mother, Cookie, was born at Taronga in 1978 and her father, Timothy, came from Honolulu Zoo four years ago. Ady was named after a keeper, Ady D'Ettorre.

Ady D'Ettore is certainly a prolific keeper at Taronga Zoo - the Australian sea lion, Torre, was also named after her many decades after the birth of this pygmy hippo calf.

Not to mention the 25-year age gap between Ady and Timmy's final calf, Kambiri, who is still at Taronga.

Not to mention the 25-year age gap between Ady and Timmy's final calf, Kambiri, who is still at Taronga.

It’s also interesting to note how many Pygmy hippopotamus Taronga Zoo had on site over the years. In 1985 when Ady was born until her export three years later, Taronga had five Pygmy hippopotamus:

0.1 Cleo (1968-2005)
0.1 Katrina (1973-2012)
0.1 Cookie (1978-1990)
1.0 Timmy (1980-2011) 1981-1995; 2007-2011
0.1 Ady (1985) Exported 1988

Presumably Ady was kept with her mother until her export; with the four adults living separately from each other.

Then following the death of Cookie in 1990, Timmy was transferred out five years later and they held a mother and daughter (Cleo and Katrina) for the next decade until Cleo’s death in 2005. Timmy and Petre were brought in in 2007, with the zoo holding the three adults (Katrina being the third) and breeding from Timmy and Petre.

Jojo

For those that are interested, I recently came across photo of Jojo from 1979, when he was 15 years of age: TUG-OF-WAR WITH A CHIMP - Its part of a day at the new style Taronga Zoo - The Australian Women's Weekly (1933 - 1982) - 7 Nov 1979

Jojo was born at Taronga Zoo 18/09/1964 to Bobby and Fifi and became the alpha male at the age of 10, when Bobby died. He remained the alpha male until his export to Jackson Zoo in 1986.

Jojo sired 24 offspring at Taronga Zoo. The most notable are: Lisa (born 1979 to Lisa), Sacha (born 1980 to Spitter), Ficha (born 1981 to Fifi), Shiba (born 1981 to Susie), Cara (born 1981 to Chiki), Samantha (born 1983 to Sutu) and Sally (born 1985 to Spitter).

I can really see his daughter Shiba; and granddaughter, Kuma (daughter of Ficha), in him:

Nice to see that photo again. Jojo (1964) is 15 years old in this photo and you can see a reasonable amount of pink pigmentation still on him. I think he looks a lot like Kuma.

Fifi (1947-2007) was the mother of 11 infants including Jojo (1964), Flint (1971) and Ficha (1981).

Jojo was assumed to be the sire of Ficha; with alternative candidates being Flint (beta male), Mike (1973) and Danny (1974).

Ficha was the mother of three infants at Taronga Zoo including Kuma (1991).

Really cool finds Steve. Any idea when the back wall was torn down? The giraffes with the Sydney Harbour and Skyline are an iconic feature of Taronga today - it's difficult to imagine the zoo without that!

On Buttons, I interestingly have no info on him via the studbook. But if the info on the photo's caption is accurate, he would have to be 'Whitey' (28/08/1972) Sent to Dubbo 09/03/1985.

Whitey was a son of 1.0 Peter and 0.1 Mosman. Both Peter and Mosman were half siblings, calves of the famous Jan Smuts.

@Jambo

Oh no worries man, just glad that those legends shared on facebook. Yeah I'm certain you have it right and Whitey and Buttons are the same fella (all those different names hey lol). I think @Hix would be the person who might know when that wall was torn down (''Mr Gorbachev!..tear down this wall!'' :p); was something to do with a breeze (Antarctic one? from the south? believed would prevent health and discomfort issues for the giraffes during Hallstrom's time hey {possibly did}, but blocked the famous harbour view).

Oh right Peter was the one who took over from his father (and probably grandfather and great grandfather given how Jan Smut's was utlised as a breeding bull giraffe lol) after J.S died in '68.

I don't recall of another zoo where so much use of concrete being used in animal enclosures in my 1977 visit I saw everything from Elephants, Eland, blackbuck, lion/tiger pits and even Australia's last Gnu all housed on concrete!

I think you'd be surprised to find how many animals back in the day had all sorts of different names; nicknames the whole lot!

Peter pretty much took over his father as the breeding bull, but there was a short period following his father's death where his half brother Oigle was the parks breeding bull. Oigle, however, passed within a few years and Peter was consequently the breeding bull of the 70's. Peter was later replaced by his son, Jamie, following his passing in 1977 at the age of 14.
