Oakland Zoo has taken in care 2.1 orphaned Puma cubs.
Oakland Zoo on Instagram: "On Sunday, @californiadfw brought 3 orphaned mountain lion cubs to Oakland Zoo’s vet hospital. The trio, estimated to be about 3 months old, were found in Portola Valley. CDFW believes the mother of these cubs is the same female mountain lion that was killed by a car in the same area. The three siblings (2 males and 1 female), are thin but relatively healthy. Their care team at our veterinary hospital has given them the names Thistle, Spruce, and Fern (Fern is the female). In the wild, mountain lion cubs need about two years with their mother in the wild to learn survival skills. Because these cubs are so young, they lack those skills and sadly cannot return to the wild. Instead, we will work with CDFW to find these cubs a new forever home at an appropriate institution. While they are with us, we will take great care of these orphaned cubs, and, we will continue to take action to reduce human-wildlife conflict and make our shared living spaces safer for all animals. On February 6th, the zoo announced they transferred the spider monkey, now named Azules, to an unspecified Wildlife Confiscations Network participant institution.

Transfer of the 2 remaining Puma cubs to Phoenix Zoo
Oakland Zoo on Instagram: "Fern and Thistle Have Moved to Their New Home in @phoenixzoo On Monday morning, Oakland Zoo Veterinary and Animal Care team prepared the cubs for their road trip to Arizona. Upon arrival, Thistle showed a bit more courage and immediately stepped out of his crate to eat, while Fern was more cautious and took her time getting acquainted with her new space. For now, they will remain in their nighthouse to get comfortable and get to know their Phoenix Zoo Animal Care Staff. Because Fern and Thistle were both orphaned at very young ages, they sadly do not possess the skills to survive on their own and cannot be returned to the wild. The Domestic Goat Jellybean has passed away on July 3rd.
Oakland Zoo on Instagram: "On July 3rd, we made the difficult decision to say goodbye to one of our most beloved goats, Jellybean. Jellybean was a gentle and loving presence in the Petting Yard, who left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Guests of all ages came to know and adore her, many of whom returned to the Zoo just to spend time with her. A message from an apprentice keeper who worked closely with Jellybean: "Offering the goats and sheep choice in the petting yard has always been of utmost importance to the team. As one of our geriatric goats, Jelly has paved the way for voluntary participation in medical procedures. Battling arthritis, Jelly was trained to participate voluntarily in hoof trims and injections to keep her as comfortable as possible. Furthermore, she allowed our vet team to perform laser therapy to soothe her aching joints with no manual restraint required. Jelly has made the team incredibly proud with her bravery and dedication to training, and she will leave a lasting mark on all of us." Thank you, Jellybean, for the joy brought to so many. Our hearts go out to everyone who knew and loved her. "

On August 7th, the zoo announced they bred and released 43 mountain yellow-legged frogs into the wilds of 2 national parks in California.

On March 24th, the zoo announced they acquired a female (0.1) cotton-top tamarin named Ash from Idaho Falls Zoo in Idaho, which is on exhibit. The zoo also announced their previous female, Mia, passed away in November 2024.

On November 20th, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (1m.0) Hamadryas baboon named Mzuzi to Phoenix Zoo in Arizona.

Addison, a three-year-old female, comes from North Carolina Zoo, while Mzuzi, a four-year-old male, comes from Oakland Zoo. Per the recommendation of the Species Survival Plan, the addition of Addison and Mzuzi will enable a more natural social dynamic within the Zoo's troop.
