Orangutans in Europe 2025

47-year-old Sumatran orang-utan male Mano has died at Zoo Berlin. Over the past few days, changes in his behaviour were noticed. Therefore, he was thoroughly examined, including a CT scan. This showed that his lungs were severely affected by tumours. It was therefore decided to put him to sleep.

In the press release about his death, the zoo mentions that they will stop keeping orang utans in the medium term. A new group for the remaining female Bini and her son Bulan is being looked for by the EEP.

Female Daisy has given birth at Dresden, father is male Toni. Is there previous child 1:0 Dalai (2015) still at Dresden?

Yes, should be. When they opened the new orang house they separated Dalai from his parents and said that they will keep him and wait for the studbook keeper to send a female. Right now they have Tonio/Daisy and their new offspring, second group is Djaka/Djudi, and Dalai probably is alone.

44-year-old Bornean orangutan male Ejde has died at Zoo Rostock. He had been suffering from a chronic respiratory condition since 2008. As he got older, the condition worsened despite intensive medical care. Last Wednesday, he underwent necessary treatment under anaesthesia, but it did not have the desired effect, so he was put to sleep a few days later.

So only five orangs are living in Apenheul. It seems to me a small number given the space they have there for more individuals.

The husbandry guidelines aim on keeping males alone with the females having the option which one to go to - or to stay without male. Apenheul has a perfect setup for this. Harem groups just to fill the size of an enclosure is not how you keep orangs today.
