European Nile Hippo Population

[Nile Hippo Expert]

This is a list for all Nile Hippos in European Zoos and facilities. As there have been population threads for North America and Oceania, I have been wondering since I joined ZooChat why nobody has created a European Nile Hippo population thread, so I have decided to research it and then make my first new population thread for ZooChat. After a few weeks of research, I finished the list of all Nile Hippos in Europe yesterday. Let me know if you know of any other holders, animals not on this list, animals on this list who have passed away, and any other transfers you know of.

Does anyone have death dates for these following animals? All of them were alive a few years ago but appear to be deceased now with no announcement of death ever happening.

38-year-old female hippo Kathy has died at Zoo Karlsruhe. Her general condition had already deteriorated in recent weeks. Because she had not been eating much, she lost a lot of weight. As previous tests were inconclusive, it was decided to put her under anaesthesia for more extensive examination. Blood and urine tests indicated kidney failure. It was therefore decided to put her to sleep under anaesthesia.

Very sad to hear, I wonder what their plans are for their future of hippos, now that Platsch is also 38 and is certainly getting up there in age. However, there is definitely a reasonable possibility that he still could live another decade or more, considering he comes from one of the longest-lived lines of Nile Hippos ever.

Spoiler: Platsch's many long-lived relatives:

His mother Petra is still alive at age 49 (his dad Maikel was 39 and still in good health when his life ended in a tragic way by swallowing a ball, and we'll never know how long he might have lived), his maternal grandparents (Ottokar and Petra I) lived to the ages of 53 and 48, his paternal grandmother (Tanja) lived 49 years and his great-grandparents (Knautschke and Bulette) lived 46 and 53 years, and another great-gandmother (Zora) lasted 47 years.

I want to know does Karlsruhe plan to bring a new mate or companion for Platsch, keep him as a single hippo, send him off to another zoo and start a new herd, or phase hippos out entirely?

EDIT: the lineage of majority of hippos kept in European facilities is not 100% known (lack of records in zoo archives) and where it is known, it´s often impossible to tell what subspecies the original animals were. Most founders arrived before WWII, quite a few before beginning of 20th century. And country of origin is often just guesed by the name of port the shipment originated from, if the animal trader even disclosed it to customers. It´s impossible to even try anything like subspecies level management. Hippo coordinator has probably his hands full just to keep the current zoo population somewhat viable and genetically sound in situation so many current holders have plans to phase out the species so total available space is rather schrinking.

One of the adult females is said to have died recently. The Species360 tool on the IUCN website indeed confirms that Copenhagen has four hippos at the moment. Anyone who knows more?

The deceased female would either be;

Both females sired offspring born last year. If they are indeed down to just four, it would mean another hippo has died (or Yala has likely transferred out).

Dvur Kralove will soon transfer their 2 hippo sisters (parents Mike x Mona for both) born in 2020 and 2021 to the UK soon, presumably to Longleat to breed with Hodor.
