SeaWorld San Diego Penguin Encounter closing?

Didn’t think of that, is the exhibit enclosed like Penguin Encounter? Would be cool though might take renovations. However if they go with this, they should change the name to “Wild Polars/Poles” :p

The name has been changed from Wild Arctic to Expedition Odyssey Exhibit (creative, I know..) and it is strictly arctic. Personally I would be opposed to the idea because they already have an Antarctica exhibit on the other side of the park. Personally, I think they should take out one of the pointless gift shops in the Antarctica area and make another exhibit space specifically for emperors, depending on how much space is back there.

@seaworld.photos on Instagram has spotted an Emperor Penguin above the underwater viewing area (where there is glass). So, they are officially on display. According to the instagram story, some of the educators were unaware of this which is interesting, and SeaWorld has made no announcement.

I’m praying to god that this is only temporary as they build a new one in San Diego but sadly that is not likely to happen because of modern Seaworld.

I don't think it is, they are supposedly building a restaurant where the penguin encounter is and making a new exhibit for magellanics and humboldts.

I thought about this yesterday but I think it would be cool if SeaWorld made a banded penguin complex with all species excluding Galapagos for obvious reasons. So 3 exhibits for African, Magellanic, and Humboldt penguins alongside other seabirds in their respected range (African= African Oystercatcher, Humboldt=Peruvian Booby, Pelican, Magellanic= Steamer Duck etc.), and a dedicated area educating Galpagos wildlife. Granted this is less likely to happen, but I can dream.

Any word on where the kings went?

Hopefully we see the emperors stay in the states and on display. I think Detroit might meet the temperature requirements, but might just miss it.
I'm pretty sure that Detroit's exhibit is warmer than Orlando's actually (according to Google) - someone feel free to correct me. I presume it's because Orlando has Adelies, which require colder temps, and Detroit does not.

Might be a little warm for the northern species SeaWorld holds. Several alcids do winter off San Diego, but as a year round outdoor exhibit I'm not sure it would suit them.
To add to this, I also just don’t see SeaWorld housing their alcids outside even if it was possible. They’d have to build a new exhibit or tweak one of the empty ones (if there are any) me thinks. Not to speculate but the chances of them going to either San Antonio or Abu Dhabi seem high.

Also if they built a new exhibit for the Magellanic penguins would it also house the parks colony of Humboldt Penguins and other fish and bird species or just the Magellanic penguins.

Other bird species might be able to be mixed with the Magellanics but not fish or Humboldts. SeaWorld already has an exhibit BTS for young breeding colony of Humboldt penguins, the ones seen at Dolphin Point in the old otter exhibit are considered geriatric/old retired from the breeding program. They wouldn’t want to interrupt the breeding colony or risk hybridization so there really isn’t any need for a new exhibit for the Humboldt penguins. The elder Humboldt penguins would be at risk of bullying/harassment from the younger Magellanics. Fish and penguin mixes tend to notoriously n fail most of the time for penguins tend to harass them. It would be cool if they added Brown Pelicans, cormorants, or booby birds with the Magellanic penguins that represent species in their native range. As for the other birds of Penguin Encounter (seen BTS), more likely they will be in aviaries or BTS. Unsure what the plan is for aclids, but it would love for the park to still keep them and add them in Wild Arctic.

edit:unfortunately aclids will be moving out the park
