Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park Formerly kept Species Zoo Tampa/Lowry Park Zoo

While the following is very brief, I did want to mention my personal discovery of these former species; and where in the zoo they were once found:

Asian Domain/Gardens:

Nilgai
“Muntjac” - (Muntiacus sp.)

Safari Africa:
Lesser Kudu
They still hold reeves muntjac in Asian Gardens, they/it is in the Sulawesi Aviary. They used to have their own exhibit, however.

Can you let me know where you saw about the lesser kudu? I know they hold/held greater kudu.

In the document where I first saw the listed species, the nilgai and muntjacs were briefly mixed with the Indian Rhinos; which only lasted for two years before their departure.

As for the lesser kudu, they too were in a similar situation, for they were added to the current nyala exhibit before sparring issues with the male nyala would result in their removal.

[Edit] cross-response with PSO

Also, I was not aware of the zoo having Greater Kudu, any ideas about their whereabouts if they are a current species?

Fascinating, thanks! Yeah, they mixed different animals with the Indian rhino, they also had domestic goats at one point.

The last time I saw a kudu was on the safari tram, but that was a couple of years ago now.

Based on what is listed from a 1988 map of the zoo. I just thought it would be nice to help further add on to the thread’s already impressive list with the following animals that are listed below. Although I do not exactly know when each of these animals were removed from the collection; it’s possible that at least, some of them may have been quickly removed, not too long after the zoo’s initial reopening:

Asian Domain/Gardens:
Gaur
“Persian Gazelle” - (Goitered)

Primate World:

Red Ruffed Lemur
Lion-Tailed Macaque
Spider Monkey - (unknown species)

Other:

Chilean Flamingo - (which according to the map, were kept in the small pond area right of the main entrance)
A few years late to this conversation but is there any chance you have a copy of the 1988 map you would be willing to share?

Does ZooTampa have any animals anymore at this point? I remember it being quite the place back from some visits in the early 2000's but seem the collection has really dwindled. Does the park not have zebra anymore and what hoofstock species are left in the Africa section besides the giraffe and okapi?

It's still a really good zoo, but not top 10 anymore. The new renovated manatee building may help to address that. They have big plans for renovations of Asia and Africa as well as a major expansion across the street to add a new entrance and South America section.

As for African hoofstock, nope, no zebra currently. As far as I remember they have: nyala, bongo, yellow backed duiker, bay duiker, blue duiker, impala, Masai giraffe, okapi, pygmy hippo, and white rhino. Honestly, the lack of any zebra is bizarre.

If I'm not mistaken, Lex had a lot to do with the rarer hoofstock. Once he left, the zoo slowly phased most of them out.

Probably, he was the main driver behind Africa opening. It had so.many cool multi species habitats when it opened.
